It's easily fixable in the "Calibrate Lag" option.
However, the online play for all the systems, as far as I could tell, works the same. You play in real time and so does the other player, but you receive their playing with a little lag. That means you're both playing in real time, so when you hit the note it registers as in real time, you just receive their playing with a little lag.
Kinda hard to explain without physically talking to you :P
