Who here has played the Touhou series? It's a japanese danmaku (or 'bullet hell') series of games, complete with tons of quirky characters that each reign over a specific ability or two (such as Sakuya Izayoi's ability to stop/reverse time and mess around with space). There's probably about 100 characters by now, since each game likes to introduce at least six or seven new ones.
Unlike a lot of bullet hells (Cave's shooters such as Deathsmiles and Mushihime-sama), Touhou is actually a lot easier. That doesn't mean it isn't balls-to-the-wall hard on its highest difficulties, but it's at least FUN compared to the other ones, at least that's what a lot of people say (myself included, I've tried Deathsmiles.)
Here's an example of how Touhou works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWa_NCOrLC0#t=1m48s - You play as the character on the bottom of the screen and have to dodge various waves and structures of bullets. There's always a pattern and always a way to survive it. (Please note that this is Lunatic mode - the HARDEST mode. So Easy and Normal are not this difficult.)
Also, to note, the boss in that video is Kaguya Houraisan, who's a reference to the Princess in an old Japanese folklore. I forget what the name of it is, though. In the Touhou franchise, she has the ability of eternity manipulation.

I own most of the windows games and also played every demo and other doujin games related to touhou. It's really a fantastic series, especially the characters and of course the famous music some of the titles may even be known by no touhou fans e.g. U.N. owen was her or Bad Apple. Also it has the most creative and diversify of fan works I've ever seen, to a game series that is mainly labeled has "otakuish".
Well the story of th08 is loosely based on 竹取物語 (taketori monogatari) a well known Japanese folk tale. Kaguya Houraisan is made after Kaguya-hime the moon princess of the folktale.
So what's your favorite touhou game?

A good second favorite would be Touhou 11: Subterranean Animism. I LOVE fighting Utsuho. :D GIANT SUNS AND STARS.

Subterranean Animism is nice as well but I absolutely sucked on every level accept easy/normal while still needed to use continues in normal so mehh>.<
I'm still curious how Ten Desires is going to continue, and if the hopes/rumours will be true about a certain character's returning=3

I like Phantom Ensemble, but I really love Doll Judgment a bit better. Especially the remix that popped up in the Rockgirl arrange soundtrack. Anyone heard of that? It's basically a set of OSTs that some guy made that remixes the Touhou themes in 8-bit.
Rockgirl 1 remixes Embodiment of Scarlet Devil.
2 remixes Perfect Cherry Blossom.
3 remixes Mountain of Faith. (Yeah, no Imperishable Night or Phantasmagoria of Flower View. D: )

Yes, I heard about the Rockgirl remix I've got the first one here, the touhou 8-bit remixes are really catchy I've got Utsuho's theme as one of my mobile ringtons (next to the 8-bit version of King DeDeDe's theme). Overall all I can't really say which music is my favorite, because there are so many good ones. But I guess I have a bunch of remixes of U.N. and eternal smoke so this maybe two of my most heard touhou tracks.
Well, about the fighting games I absolutely suck on them only with Reimu and Suika I can possibly win...so ahrm I prefer Danmaku>D

I might be wrong, but I think the controls for IMP are the same as the ones for Scarlet Weather and Hisoutensoku. Either way, Immaterial is pretty much an incomplete version of Scarlet Weather and Hisoutensoku, so you're better off playing those. I mained Hong Meiling and Sakuya in those two.

They say Easy mode. I am scared of Easy mode. The furthest I've got is beating Reimu in IN (fluke) but it was a game over cause I used too many continues... :( Currently trying to win Ten Desires.

Actually, they say Easy Mode is for kids. And Reimu in which game?
And no really, that's what they say.
Though to be honest, it's always good to start with easy. And you should always try to learn as Reimu first; since Reimu has homing. When you get better at analyzing patterns, you can change characters (if even possible) to your liking. Most of my touhou playing friends think I'm suicidal because I play on keyboard instead of gamepad. =w=

I understand that for the fighters. And I'm usually a Sakuya player. Which is sad, since she's not in every game.

I wanted to make a Touhou thread, then I found this so maybe I should post, here goes nothing!
Anyway, I LOVE Touhou, it's very challenging and entertaining (For me...). I barely reached the final bosses on easy/normal (Not to mention I can't defeat any of them...).
However, I do suck more on the fighting games. Fighting games were never my type! xD But I'm looking forward for the next game, even if it's a fighting game (I think it was called "Hopeless Masquerade"?). The only thing I know about it is that Ichirin Kumoi is going to be a playable character :D
I wonder if some of you played the PC-98 Touhou. I wonder if I'm not the only one who find them harder than some of the Windows titles (Subterrean Aninism and UFO are hard!!)...No? Only me? OK...
