Any other Advance Wars players here?
I've been playing since Advance Wars 1 came out on the GBA, but the series has a much longer history in Japan.
All in all Advance Wars, IMO is a great turn-based strategy game that is easy to learn but difficult to master. Like I said I've been playing since the first (US released) one and I'm sure I'm not even very good compared to other players out there, especially on the game's various fan sites.
The new game, Advance Wars: Days of Ruin is going to be released the 21st of January (Martin Luther King day) and I will be sure to pick it up. It will be interesting to see whether the game's new darker art style will make it more or less popular than the series was prior to Days of Ruin.
It is funny that the game is still called "Advance Wars" despite the fact that this will be the second installment of the game to hit the DS :-P But then again I don't think there's a better name for the series either.

Famicom Wars is still the superior name. >_>

I also think we may already have a topic about this, let me go check...

Sorry if there is one already, I checked like the first seven pages at least and didn't find one. :/

Yeah, it was about ten pages back...

So I'd say it's safe to make a fresh one.

Actually, DoR is coming out the 23rd - it was pushed back 2 days for reasons unspecified.

I love AW, DoR's high on my list of stuff to pick up.

NO WAY! I was looking forward to picking it up on a day where I had no school :sadshoe:

Love the games. AW:DS is still one of my fave DS (Jake/Collin tag + both sale skills, 100 extra cash, speed up star power = super easy, and Jake/Sasha theme music = great) games ever, and the GBA ones were excellent as well...never played the OG ones for NES/SNES.

Wish Battlion Wars was as good though, those are pretty ho-hum (glad they didn't name it as apart of the AW series like they originally planned).

Meh. I still wonder what's with DoR's dark theme. Don't get me wrong, I'll probably really like online and the campaign and all that, but we've already got an angsty strategy game from Intelligent so why add another one?

I'll miss Drake. He was psycho.

Drake was quite under-used and pathetic outside of sea battles.

I'll be checking this game out, no doubt about it. The only question is "when?"

Post subject:  Re: Advance Wars

I've visited a few AW communities and the general consensus is that while his powers are unique and fun he just can't keep up with heavy-hitters like Kanbei and Jess.

He's simply too weak outside of naval combat. The only things backing him up are his powers; which really aren't all that great. Any sensible person playing against Drake will remember to bring along APCs and park their units on cities.

He simply lacks the firepower to contend with other COs. Hell, even Jake could beat him. His only strong area is sea warfare which he's grossly overpowered in. To make things worse, if only a small portion of the map is dedicated to naval combat he's pretty much screwed. He lacks versatility; areas which other COs are proficient in. Hell, even Jugger with his bass-ackward firepower can adapt to a sticky situation better than Drake.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand...that's what you get from a two-year Advance Wars junkie.

Indeed. I enjoyed playing as him and spamming the tsunami stuff, so I was okay with him. Though I probably liked Grit best.

Warning: the official link in this post starts the video automatically, so watch your volume settings. It's a cool vid. :D

My only experience with the Advance Wars series so far is Dual Strike, but that was awesome. It's just a shame it didn't have online because the rest of the game was pretty much flawless, except I didn't like the inability to construct buildings.

For those of you not aware, Days of Ruin is scheduled for a European release on January 25 as Advance Wars: Dark Conflict, next Friday. Looking at the previews and the series' pedigree, I'll definitely be picking this up on release.

The official PR info is a pretty impressive list of new features, and the gameplay video makes this look like a turn-based game reminiscent of the Command and Conquer series, which is definitely something to look forward to.

On another note:

OHNOES THEY'RE ALL DEADEDED

That means the plot ties in directly to the previous Advance Wars games. Hm.

I played Dual Strike first, then I played Advance Wars 2, then Advance Wars. Needless to say, I was disgusted with the first game after being exposed to its superior sequels. The design and detail were fantastic but the balance was border-line broken practically because of Max alone.

Post subject:  Re: Advance Wars

I was actually always a Drake fan myself, I have a lot of respect for the idealistic "navy dog" and battles on the high seas. In this new installment of AW, the Aircraft Carrier unit will be able to deploy a type of plane called a Sea Plane (or is it Ship Plane?) like an airport, and Battleships will be able to fire after moving, so naval warfare, IMO, is seriously getting upped in intensity this time around. You won't see those naval standoffs where each player is keeping out of range of the other's battleships and keeping his own battleship surrounded by cruisers to prevent submarines from getting to the battleship. Plus the Sea Plane, I think, will be able to attack any type of unit, like the old stealth bomber. speaking of the stealth, I don't think it makes a comeback in Days of ruin.

I heard someone talking about the new tanks the game has on a different website's forum. The "normal" tank unit this time around (still costs 7000) is supposedly somewhat weaker than the typical AW tank, while the heavy tank (costs 12000) is between the strength of a typical AW tank and medium tank, and the "war tank" (costs 18000) is apparently about the strength of a typical AW medium tank. I for one would love it if this were true, I got sick of having a stronger tank emerge in each new Advance Wars, and the neotank was overpowered. Weakening the tanks, I think, will increase the need for solid battlefield tactics and planning, as ground warfare won't be centered around the neotanks and megatanks which could easily 1HKO units like rockets and anti-air.

Infantry (or meatshield) spamming is also being combated, the price of infantry has been increased to 1500. But for some reason, the price of mechs (now called Bazooka) was reduced to 2500. All I can see that doing is increasing the viability of the mech rush tactic. The new infantry unit, the Motorbike unit, costs around 4000 (I think?) and moves 5 spaces, with the ability to capture properties. That's real mechanized infantry for you, not some heavy infantry that they just decide to call "mechs." :P The APC has also become known as a "mobile workshop" and can build temporary ports, airports, etc. and still transport troops. Not sure if the supply command is still available, but I hope it is.

My favorite COs in the old game were Andy (all-around goodness), Sonja (though she was overpowered some in AW:DS, mostly when you added fog of war into the mix), Sensei (I always had a liking for airborne troops), and Olaf. Character-wise, though (and definitely music-wise XD), Drake was up there too.
I also liked Kanbei and Grit but I always viewed them as semi-overpowered. I'm hoping the new COs will be likeable characters, like a lot of our old cast was. If I knew any of you, I'd also bet you $10 that Hawke makes a return in AW:DoR, but that's just me speculating...

PS: Nice name Walkie Talkie Man, I actually like that song XD

The price increase for Infantry was to reduce Inf. spam in competetive play. The price cut for Mechs is justified because while they have superior firepower to the Infantry, they still can't move very far.

Colin + Sasha = BROKEN GAME

-Sasha makes $$$
-more $$$ means even more $$$ with Colin's CO
-$$$ + Sasha = no COP for you!
-Colin + $$$ = lotsa units
-lotsa units = ZERG RUSH KEKEKE

I won't even start when they gain more abilities like Combat Pay and Fire Sale....

or their 130% tag.

I've hung around AW communities far too much, you should see what's considered balanced over there.

The 'Broken Trio' if I recall correctly are Grit, Colin, and Sami. Hachi/Sturm/Von Bolt are givens. And it's all but universally agreed Tag Breaks destroyed the gameplay.

Oh man, Trust Fund is one hell of a Tag. I remember destroying Crystal Calamity with TF, Col/Sas was the main party below the crystal, and once I built up enough troops/funds (and did the mini-objectives), I unleashed that bad boy. I think my favorite's was Sonja/Kanebi's tag though...that was pretty crazy too.

Rawr, DoR info.

http://gamedaily.newaol.com/pub/prima/AW_DoR_PPAOL.pdf

It's 14 pages of Prima's guide for the game, it's got spoilers of course. Nothing too major, but a fun read.

Actually, the broken trio is "Grit, Colin, and Hachi". Sturm is also considered broken. Von Bolt...nah, not really. Someone from Wars World News made a tier list but I'm too lazy to dig it up. IIRC, it had six tiers "Broken, Top, High, Middle, Low, Bottom". Can't remember which COs fit in which category, though.

Ah, you're right. Dunno why I swapped Sami and Hachi. :yogi:

Custom Wars is like balance-mania, between us and WWN we've probably overanalyzed the game far more than the developers ever intended. :P
