(sorry about the title, I couldn't help myself)

Ok so the net has been all abuzz lately with rumors that the announcement of a Wii sequel to NiGHTS into Dreams is imminent. This is mostly due to reports from a few gaming magazines who are all claiming to have "a huge announcement" for next month's issues (like so), and also a few alleged interviews with Yuji Naka and others. Most of this is still rumor and hearsay, however, so I was curious to see what opinions everyone else had on the situaton.

There's been hopes of a sequel for a long time, but it seems like lately talk about it has intensified considerably. What's the likelihood of there being an announcement in the next couple of weeks? The more I think about it the more it seems to come together in my mind, for several reasons. A few places that claim to have some leaked info say that Yuji Naka's new studio, Prope, is handling the work on it, but just as much evidence indicates that he has nothing to do with any old Sega properties. I recall reading somewhere that Naka thought the original game was perfect and thus no sequel could improve upon it, but I'm not sure if that's true. Can anybody confirm that interview?

I think the timing for such an announcement makes a lot of sense if one assumes that Sega still holds the rights to the franchise. It sounds like Naka was vocally against production of a sequel, so now that he's not a part of Sonic Team anymore there isn't much holding Sega back from revisiting the property. The only problem, then, is the fact that Sonic Team's more recent efforts have been far short of impressive, so a shoddy sequel may doom the series before it can even make a decent revival. I never played the original NiD, given that I had a Nintendo 64, but I have taken interest in it recently and would love to try it out if I can get my hands on it somehow.

What are everyone's thoughts on the matter? Do you think a sequel is coming? Who should cover development? What sorts of gameplay or control issues should be addressed in a sequel?

I'd be interested in getting a copy for myself if indeed the title comes to fruitation. But as this will be my first jump into the NiGHT's line of titles I'll try to keep my judgement reserved until actually playing it. Hearing about the controvercy and directors is all nice and such, but in so far as it doesn't interfear with me having a good time then so be it.

I think it's just an original title, with the buzz about NiGHTS used to attract attention to whatever magazine/website is publishing it. Just because the project may involve people who worked on a franchise doesn't mean the project itself is about that franchise.

God I want to close this thread only so I could never read that title again.

That said, I was never really a huge NiGHTs fan (as in I don't have a Saturn or NiGHTs) but I remembered it being fun--I'd be interested to see what they do with the Wiimote, and if they can really try some new things out. I think it's time for the Wii to start showing us what it can do, and stop giving us endless 'mingames.' This and Mario Galaxy make me interested in the system.

I saw some videos of NiGHTS into Dreams and it looked.. repetitive and had no gameplay. As if someone was just flying through these hoops over and over. Maybe it's a game you need to see in action to understand.

In fact, you pretty much summed up the game perfectly. And it's an absolutely brilliant game, though it's definitely not for everyone. If this is for the Wii I think it would be the main reason for me to buy one.

Saturns aren't region free, but you can get a device called an ST-Key that plugs into the back of the system which lets you bypass the region coding or something like that.

Night' really is making a come back and looks nice so far... I haven't played the game myself but I have heard things about it so. Will be looking forward into this... If they get controls right it can be great.

I never owned a Saturn, thus no previous NiD experience other than videos and word of mouth.
Hoping Sega doesn't half-bake it like Sonic, I'm looking forward to it.

Anywho, a Naka quote from UK Edge for the OP:
Yuji Naka wrote:
I know a lot of people love it and want us to make a sequel, but for us it's a really important game. Like the way Spielberg likes E.T. so much he won't remake it, I don't want to make another NiGHTS.

So now we have a name for the Wii-exclusive game, NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams. The Wikipedia article has some rather interesting trivia.

Wikipedia wrote:
The Maxi Consolas article on NiGHTS Wii and interview with Takeshi Iuzuka confirmed the following:

- A sequel wasn't made earlier because they didn't want to evolve the game graphically, they wanted to evolve it from a gameplay standpoint, make it more surreal. With the Wii they were given this chance, and they took it.
- Sega will make the official unveiling at the beginning of April.
- There will be a two player mode.
- Online features (Likely WiiConnect24 connectivity).
- Nightopia revisited with more human characters, more enemies and bosses, more tricks and a bigger freedom of movements.
- Sonic Team is developing the game.
- Takeshi Iuzuka, the director of Sonic Heroes, is directing NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams.
- Wii exclusive, with no intention to port it over at the moment.

Is it just me or is "Journey of Dreams" a completely bland and uninspiring title for what should be one of Sega's biggest franchise sequels?

*Doesn't plan to rename the topic*

Considering the guy behind Sonic Heroes is the revealed director, does it really suprise you?

I suppose now you can just hope that the game is playable, what with Sonic Team at the helm.

Sadly, Kenjimurasame hit the nail on the head. I'm going to remain cautiously optimistic about this. Here's hoping they don't turn it into some epic, linear soap opera with emo to spare.

I've had a saturn for years, and with nights being about $5 on ebay, I've never gotten around to buying it.

The reality is evident, it will fail, like everyting else sega has been releasing, Flopping hopelessly on the deck like a landed fish, Sonic Team just isnt the same as it was in '97, Which is why I have a fully upgraded Sega Genesis (15lbs and 3 AC adapters of power) if I ever wanna experience sega.
