This is a pretty big thing in the gaming forums I usually go to.
Some users there are even hoping that this is some sort of April Fools joke.
Meekins

I must say, these two are easily my favourite gaming characters in the world and I'm just lost of words about this crazy nonsense.

Sounds like a bad april fools prank, mainly because they're also using the Olympic Games, which I'm almost positive requires some sort of special license in of itself or something. That, and neither series is grounded in realism, so such a title seems almost silly when it involves a plumber and a hedgehog.

Sorry about that, gamefan06.

Hold it!
This is from my second link:
Mario and Sonic have been respectful rivals since the early days of videogames. In fact, for a long time they have been discussing the possibility of one day competing against each other. Now they have been given the perfect opportunity to meet at the Olympic Games, we may finally learn who is actually faster, Mario or Sonic?
- Shigeru Miyamoto

WTF? Do they think he's high? This game must be fake.

If this is a fake, then I'll give the internet's gaming press a lot of credit, as it's being reported on pretty much every site. I mean we're talking about every source getting in on the same prank, which I believe is unprecedented to this point. I'm not so sure though...April first is still several days away, and there's already quite a few details surfacing that make it sound unlikely to be a hoax (at least one of the articles I've seen mentioned that they've obtained the needed license from the Olympic committee's press group, the fact that they specify that the game will have different publishers in different regions, and so on).

Of course I do seriously wonder about who would come up with such an idea, or even why they would need or want the Olympic name to be associated with it....well at least the promo art looks neat.

I don't think it's a prank, as Anders have pointed out my reason. It does sound interesting though. Two franchises join together for one game. Though, I do think that this could pave way for Sonic to be in SSBB.

If this is a real game, then it's about time Mario and Sonic competed somehow in videogame form. I don't think it would be an April Fools joke because it isn't even here yet. Then again, I could be wrong, and it is just early...

Personally, I'd rather see them in an actual adventure game. There must be thousands of fanfics from the 90's that they could base it on. The Olympics, though? That's just silly.

I call BS. It's three days to April Fool's and there's no way they're gonna blow a Sonic/Mario crossover on the OLYMPIC GAMES.

This is a real game. Here's Nintendo's press release

http://press.nintendo.com/articles.jsp?id=11783

And if you actually follow the link to the forums you'll be redirected to Sega.com's phpBB2 forums where the 'offical' discussion is well underway.

Considering that Both Nintendo and Sega are showing their 'offical' support for this game it is impossible for it to be a april fool's joke.

And here's the Press Release from International Sports Multimedia, the license holder of said game, and all games directly involving the Olympics.

http://www.ismltd.com/pdfs/M&S%20Press% ... ease%20(US).pdf

This is way too organized to be a joke.

Pretty poor time to release this information, then. With April Fools right around the corner, things are bound to get confused, ignored or be completely unbelieved. Very odd combination of things, at that.

Still, I suppose this means one of two things: One, that Nintendo and Sega know how to pull a good trick on everybody, or Two, that Sonic's chances of getting into Super Smash Bros. Brawl just shot up a little more.

I've seen some odd quotes from developers but I've yet to see anyone diss Shigeru Miyamoto's.

If this game isn't a joke then I hope Shigeru Miyamoto was really high when he had said that. Payne

SEGA slowed Sonic way the hell down in Sonic 06, so they might be close in speed now. And as someone said on the talk page for the game on wikipedia, it's on the Japanese SEGA website, and Japan doesn't celebrate April Fool's day. I think it's real, as Nintendo and SEGA would have to pay a lot of money to use the license, which I don't think they'd shell out just for an April Fool's joke. Also, imagine how much money this game could make at Christmas. Kids love Mario and kids love Sonic, put em together and you have a huge cashcow on your hands. As for this game being the first game they appear together in instead of Smash Bros, I think both companies wanted the characters to actually interact in some sort of story with each other in the first game they appear together in, instead of Smash Bros where they wouldn't talk to each other at all, and there would be no interaction between the two for the historical gaming event. I agree though that this probably ups the possibility of Sonic in SSBB.

You know something?

BAD move by Sega. No olympic game has ever been good enough to warrant anything over 5 out of 10. I've played Barcelona 1992 (which was pretty damn good back in the day), Atlanta 1996 (Horrible, HORRIBLE), Nagano 1998 (decent) and after that, I hear they ended up worse than Atlanta.

The only good move from this is putting it on the Wii and DS, since both will feature events that are maybe a bit less than button mashers.

I feel compelled to point out that the artist drew a left hand on Mario's right arm in the first panel.

As far as Miyamoto's quote, I think it's pretty obvious that Sonic's speed is going to be "adjusted" to make for a fair competition. Most of the track and field events would be useless if he could just dash through it all in 2 seconds. Everybody's reading into that "who's faster" line way more than they should be.

You say that like bad art in a webcomic is a stunning revelation. Also, the jokes are terrible. (lol old news too)

I've really got nothing to say on the game, but god I hope it is an April Fool's joke. Either that or Nintendo and Sega just REALLY like to punch you in the wallet for brand names, since the gameplay will be mediocre at worst and WiiSports / Play at best.

At least you won't have to jump up and down on a power pad.

To be fair, professional artists make that mistake too. So says a certain page of the Street Fighter comic where Sagat has two left feet.

I don't really think that makes it any more permissible--in that instance, actually, I'd be a bit more annoyed since I would have (theoretically) paid for it. Also, professionals should know better--we hope. The obvious claim that they don't is the annoyingly large amount of times in which anime characters end up with 6 fingers.

Yeah that pretty much ends the debate right there.

But by now, people who buy anything by Liefeld deserve what they get.

By now, any company who actually HIRES Liefeld deserve what they get.

And about the Sagat thing, UDON recognized their mess up and in the second printing, redid the whole drawing so that he had a right feet. The best "We're sorry, we messed up." thing I've seen from an independant comic company.

Which doesn't explain as to why exactly the Tiger Uppercut card has the botched art.
