The first Final Fantasy I ever played was my brother's demo of Final Fantasy VII. The first Final Fantasy I bought and played for myself was Final Fantasy VIII.

It's okay. Never finished it, though... (First Final Fantasy I ever finished was FFX. Adrian )

Eh, that was years ago. I think I got stuck on some part
Spoiler: near the endgame
when you already have the Ragnarok, and you board Pandora by jumping onto it via Esthar, then you get blown out of the fortress by something or other. I was never able to figure out how to get back into Pandora.

So right now I'm working on Final Fantasy X-2 and Final Fantasy XII.

Final Fantasy VIII was an okay game, but it had an atrocious battle system that was only for the kind of RPG'ers that find Disgaea to be lacking in the "stats" department. In other words, about twelve people.

That is, unless you never learned how to properly use the Junction system. Those people were lucky. Because once you found out that you needed to basically Draw magic every two seconds, it lost it's fun. It was just TOO stat intensive and time consuming to really do something with it. If they had simplified the damn thing it might've worked better.

Also, unless you like love stories, the plot was pretty crappy. I also hated Ultemicia and her obsession with Mortal Kombat and Time "Kompression".

Same here about compression...It is just pure retarded.

A fine game to be sure.

But, AP, just because a game is overrated doesn't mean it's bad. FFVII was overrated, but it's still a great game.

Anyway, 8 was good times for me. I think it was the first one I finished, simply because I didn't feel like taking the time to get a golden chocobo or massively leveling up my characters in 7. I particularly liked the junction system in 8, and the way it used magic you already had to boost your stats. I got the game and guide as a set for a birthday quite a few birthdays ago, around when it came out. I think I was one of the only people who had it on PC, and not Playstation. Same for 7 as well. Hmm.

And yes, time compression was when the game went downhill.

And Gumshoe, what did you think of the Junction system and that whole "having to get back magic you used, lest you lower your stats" thing? I wasn't really a big fan, as already stated above.

I know that overrated games arent bad but some people think all overrated games are horrible. I currently have Haol , Halo 2, and FF7 (i didnt bother finishing it, it was confusing)

True, that wasn't always the greatest, but I didn't use the awesome magics all that much. Triple I used a few times I suppose, to give my whole party aura. After that, I didn't really need anything except special attacks to take down anybody against me. But I found triple where I could, and tried to balance its use in my party.

Also, Triple triad was ridiculously fun. I refused to go any farther on disc three without getting all the player cards I could at the time.

Ah, sweet nostalgia.

It's kind of funny that the only games from the series that I've enjoyed were Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy X.
It's also funny that these two games weren't overrated as hell. Detective Gumshoe

FF VIII was my first newer generation Final Fantasy. I had the PC version for a while back... Good game with likeable character's, good music (it's Uematsu).

I had played older FF games before (FF I-VI) So I wasn't alien to the series.

Oh Mastermind, you...read my mind! Gant

I really can't stand FF8. The draw system was obnoxious, until you got to the Heaven and Hell islands - than you could slap on some Tonberry, suck the islands dry, and never worry about needing magic again. It just wasn't enjoyable. And even when doing the Aura attacks and summoning you had to mash buttons when I just wanted to watch the pretty scene.

Not to mention much of the plot made no sense or was just ridiculous.

Though it does have one kick ass opening sequence. If only the rest of the game was as cool as it's CG~

FFVIII I couldn't finish. Too tedious, too many bland characters, the plot sucked, and quite frankly, it's not Nobuo Uematsu's best work by far.

It does have an awesome ending, though, that ties in all of the subplots and such. I mean, they even worked in that girl in the library that has a crush on Zell! Also, the scenes with Laguna and Seifer were really well done.

The game's plot actually has some nice subtlety to it once you realize (or have it pointed out) that
Spoiler: A:
Laguna is Squall's father
and
Spoiler: B:
Ultimecia is actually Rinoa
.

I think the story was awesome. The character's were good and the battle system was okay.

My game was faulty being second-hand so I took it back.

Out of the PS generation of FF games, I played 8 last, and I liked it the least, but I still had some fun playing it. The plot wasn't all that great, and the best and worst part about it was that Renzokuken is the brokes.

Also, Eyes on Me melts my brain every time I hear it.

Plus, he's one of the few japanese RPG characters that has a normal hairstyle.

Also, FF8 did have good optional bosses. Ever try beating Omega Weapon at level 1? It is possible!

I hated squall for being the silent type. He said less than ISaac in Golden sun....-_-

And that's saying something.

FF tended to have some cruddy main characters in VII and VIII. Cloud and Squall were pretty terrible IMO.

At least its better than FF7, FF7 sucked. Yeah, I said it. FF9 is one of the greatest games though.

And I'm a big fan of FF8, There was just so much to do. And all the neat features you get with the GF system. The only problem I had was that it was too easy if you knew what you were doing. I recall there is a spot near Timber where, if you grind for about 3 hours, you'll be at level 100. and this is at the first disc. Not to mention refining the cards to get 100 bones, refining them to quakes, and junctioning them to attack to make yourself rape face at disc one.

And Magic was kinda useless in that game. Unless you wanted to sacrifice your Ultima/Flare/Holy/Meteor spell for a high magic stat.

Hah, funny to see a topic about FF8. I've got two friends playing it right now. One for the second time, and another for the first. It's fun talking to them about it, and I hope to replay it myself soon. Busy with new titles at the moment though.

But yeah, it's been my favorite Final Fantasy game ever since. Unlike most people who scratched their heads over the Junctioning system and drawing magic, it really clicked with me. It was really easy to make strong characters with the attributes I wanted. The GFs and all the skills they could learn were fun too. Also, since enemy levels stayed in range with your character levels, there was no need to waste time power-leveling.

And don't get me started on Triple Triad, I could rave forever about that game. I wasted soooo much time on collecting all those cards. The plot wasn't paced well though, but I still liked the story more than most of the other games in the series. Nice music too. Good times. ( ^_^)b

I still havn't passed FFVIII yet. I stopped when I got to the castle at the end. I did enjoy playing it though. It was a lot easier to play once I figured out how to junction everything too.

I remember the first time I got to a draw point. I'm thinking, "Draw? As in sit down and sketch your surroundings? Oh, never mind, they want me to take the magic."

Compared to other Final Fantasy games, I didn't have that much use of the Gil I earned. I couldn't even buy weapons, but had to get materials and modify them.

I remember abusing Renzokuken on the bosses and then laughing at Seifer for being so weak... Damn, those were not bad times...
