Still, I agree that I am seeing quite a lot of these. It's the first time I see anything of the sort since I joined Court-Records not too long ago.

Did anyone see the "come-hither shemales" topic earlier? I was laughing for ages, didn't think anyone even used the phrase "come-hither" anymore.

But yeah, this isn't the first time we've been attacked by a wave of spambots. But because the banhammer has been enabled from the start, it seems a lot less disruptive this time.

Well, sometimes they don't really stop, they're just "sleeping." Some accounts will get created and not be used for a long time, and then weeks down the road, they'll start spamming all over the place.

Also, when the buttholes who create these spambots realize their little darlings are no longer getting through to a bunch of sites, they probably switch gears too.

Eh. Spambots are really easy to make, and are pretty much easy money/hacking for people. So... I highly doubt that anyone will ever stop making them.

As much as I hate spambots, I'm not gonna lie when I say I missed them. Something about waving my bloodthristy privileges around on these unsuspecting spambots gets me riled up. I just have some insatiable hunger that just wants them all to die. I enjoy the blood splattering from the squashed corpses as I slam my banhammer into their soft bodies. It's delicious.

Just want to point out that I just saw one with a topic addressed as Viagra for Kids. I'm gonna go now and frown at the thought that this idea was thought of in the first place.

Okay, I give up.

There are certain butthole bots (botholes?) I keep banning, and they keep coming back like one of those inflatable Bobo dolls. And by that I mean they return under the same name.

A banhammer doesn't seem to be enough in this case. Is there an internet equivalent of killing it with fire?

Not to my knowledge, Adrian. These spambots that keep coming back are actually using different IP addresses each time. That's why it looks as though the Ban Hammer doesn't work. It technically is working, but the spambots simply register through a different IP address whenever one address gets banned.

Hmm, technically it 'does' ban the username. The problem is that when the account is also deleted the ban for said username goes with it. So, for lack of anything better to offer, pick your poison? I can disable deleting the account, but that leaves the obvious problem. IP ban, reporting, and deleting posts all remain in place.

Is it possible to add a "remove privilege to make posts, threads, or PMs" or something?

Although if they're just re-registering from different IPs, I'm not sure this would do much good in the end. It can't be that hard to program the spambots to just keep adding 1 to the number at the end of their name.

And erase signatures and other profile details, to remove all spam outlets.

Pfft there's a simple solution to this problem. More Elbow Grease, we just whack more of them. If they come back we whack em again, it takes 0 effort. The only risk is if one runs amok when no warriors are on guard and beats the 50 limit, in which case it falls to Mods to take care of it.

Need a mod to banhammer this bot, it has too many posts for me to do so. I saw the banhammer option for me was disabled at earliest, 37 posts. I thought we were able to do it up until 50 though. Am I wrong?

Sorry for the doublepost, but there are two more bots that have gotten out of control.

Just out of curiosity, what is the post limit a bot can hit before the banhammer is unusable for us?

First rank I think they need like 50 to do that. It might a been mentioned before but couldn't we make it so mods manually have to approve people when they hit 49 posts into the next rank? That would ensure we keep things under wraps. It might be a bit frustrating for some though.

Well, the last two bots that I couldn't banhammer had 37 posts. I had originally thought it was 50 as well.

Doesn't the ban hammer also deactivate after an account has existed for a certain period of time? If so, perhaps this round of bots have just been sleepers that waited until they were removed from the ban hammerable group (I think it's New Users or something).

EDIT: the bot currently above me isn't one of those sleepers though.

Right security needs to be upped.

I'm going to get a drink and when I come back there's bots who have hit 35 and are somehow banhammer immune all of a sudden. The new wave are more aggressive so the 35 rule, though I swear it was meant to be 50, needs to be adjusted. Amp up the bannable limit to 49 posts and lock the ability to post at 49 posts until approved by a mod or something.

Regular members won't progress that quickly and if we spy a regular member we could 'remove' their 49-block in advance once they are confirmed not to be bots.

The 49-limit along with the hammer upgrade would allow us to prevent bots from getting any further and destroy them easily since a fair few are getting invincible now.
