The Ancient Ban-hammer's power is weakening, we need to form a party and travel to the Ancient Mount Wooster. There live the Webmaster down in his lair, and we must beseech him to restore the power to the ban-hammers!

Crawlers and spiders are the same things: bots that browse the Internet to read its content, mostly used by search engines. I believe one of the admins identified a few of these so the "users browsing this forum" thingy wouldn't count them toward the number of guests.

Spambots are bots that register to forums for the express purpose to create spam posts and topics.

Right Wooster, we actually need to do something here. Came on this morning and the first page and a half were full of one bot...with the same name as one we've banned before! This wouldn't be a problem if our ban-hammers weren't somewhat nerfed so we can't ban folks at 30-ish. Didn't it used to be 50? Can we reinstate the 50 limit?

Here's one right here that I can't ban. At the time of me posting this, it has made 32 posts. The 50 limit would make getting rid of these much easier as I haven't seen any hitting 50 as of late, but a lot of them have been getting past 30 lately.

Something else about that multiple post bot...

It doesn't show up on a member search for newly registered users. It can't be the number of posts, because there are those with even more posts, yet are vulnerable to the banhammer. Is it bypassing something in the system?

Admirable efforts on Manye's part.

However if this bot has found some way to bypass the system like that, it's not the only one there's been bots before that have been roughly 25-35 and have become unbannable.

Edit:

Dammit Yellow Magician, cause you posted in one of the bot topics it didn't get deleted with the owner so now it's just cluttering up and it makes you look responsible for a Viagra ad as you default to the thread's creator XD

The thread in question if some mod wants to fix it.

Yeah, it's generally recommended not to post in spambot threads for the above reason. If you see it and can't/won't do anything about it, it's best to just report it.

IIRC: The user has to be in the New User subgroup in order to be subject to those restrictions. So, maybe these are sleeper bots?

Also, CR's word filter is great.

I don't know if just being a sleeper bot allows them to bypass the restriction. There's got to be another factor here.

I won't lie.

I've been quite the asshole to all the poor little kittens.

By my estimations, there are 70-80 users registering daily, and anywhere between 30-50 are known bots. And most aren't even trying to hide it anymore with their gibberish names with alternating text and spam "titles."

Another one I can't delete. Has 28 posts. I'd love to know what these bots are doing that are making them unbannable for us normal members. It's driving me insane. Or maybe I'm just feeling a little power hungry.

It seems like most of them are hiding their online status because I've seen some say "online" on their profile, yet their name isn't at the bottom. I've also seen two with a custom title saying they joined to get banned, so there's definitely some humans in the mix. There was also one who somehow joined twice with the same name.

Whatever the case, I broke the handle on my banhammer twice Monday into Tuesday. :meekins: It's turned into Spambotron 2084.

That "I joined to get banned" isn't an indication they are human. The site has a hilarious word filter which identifies some common bot "pitches" and changes it into that to make it clear what the bot's fate is.

It's possible that new members won't show up as being online globally so their names won't be shown to web spiders and the like. That's also why there's no newest member thing on the home page.

How quick was it to hit 31 posts?

It's like that bot is rigged to hit the amount to bypass our banhammers as it slows down considerably after.

Hmm no I think I've seen others round about the 30-mark that can't be banhammered. Though we really need an admin or something to look into what is so special about this one.

I don't know, because I've seen a couple now with 20-ish posts that I couldn't banhammer either, whereas, I've banned a couple that had posts in their 30s. There's something beyond just a post count that's making these guys immune to us members.

I'm pretty sure it has something to do with what group they're in. IIRC, everyone is supposed to start out in the Newly Registered Users group, and that is the group from which users CAN be banned. Even people from 2010 with under 50 posts can still be in this group. However, from what I've seen, some of these new bots somehow end up in a group other than the Newly Registered Users.

I'd be curious to know how these new user/bots start off as something other than a new user, or if that's not the case, then how they are capable of immediately jumping to a group immune to the regular banhammer.

If that is how it is it definitely warrants investigation, I did a little investigating since we're getting repeats of bots and there are no other Mandythendy's on record. Even then it wouldn't make sense as it is, CR doesn't allow double names, frankly I'm baffled we can get so many.

Or....uh...since Mandythendy is such a problem why don't we make a 'fake' account with that name so it cannot register again?

Add yet another two more that I again can't banhammer. These bots are WAY more aggressive than the last flood of them that we had.
