I've been reporting all of the unreported spam messages (most are by "Jalaltefe").
This is all I can do without a banhammer, but I hope this'll at least help clean the threads of spam.

EDIT:
These 2 bots are on one post, so can you guys ban them?

Right Manythendy rises again.

At 25 posts I can't ban it, and like Adrian suspected it's confirmed as a "Registered User" instead of a new one.

So there's definitely some sort of trick here.

Screw it, after this one, I'm making a fake account with that name in the hope it stops this happening again. Hopefully it'll at least serve as a temporary measure until we find a better way to deal with this.

Gah, thanks DoMaya that would have been a nasty accident I suppose. Especially since some folks hunt sleeper bots in their spare time.

just looking out for ya man.

Hey wanna hear something funny?

When the ban hammer was first given out to the ace folks, there was a way to ban ANYONE!

I figured it out because I was too lazy to want to click a button and I just wanted to copy and paste their names into the ban url.

ANYWAYS
I tried putting in my own name, and i saw that I could ban myself!
Then I went and tried someone else's name, and I could ban them too!

I had ULTIMATE POWER!
But I did the responsible thing and told the admins.

That fateful Day when DoMaya had a glimpse of ultimate power. When the first banhammers were forged he found the secret to unlocking their true potential. He could have banned anyone...the entire site...the very gods who forged the Banhammers themselves. However seeing what terrible power lay before him both enchanted and frightened him and so he made a secret pact with the ancient gods to seal the power of the banhammers forever.

This is his story.

Unbannable on 0 posts, amazing.

It showed up the other day on 8 but I managed to ban it then :ron:

Ah sorry, I did that. I banned them and deleted the posts manually so the username wouldn't resurface. It probably won't work, so I'm sure the Manye saga is far from over.

I still wonder if we made our own "Manye" whether that would block the name being used again by a bot.

I did think about that, but I wouldn't want someone getting IP banned by mistake. I think in the end it probably won't make a lick of difference, I'm just fairly interested in what the bot will do next given that it's always going for the same username. Lower case M maybe?

I wonder if it'll do a variation of the name, by taking the base part of the name and switching out alphanumeric characters at the end. I've seen bots do something like "BobJonesAI" and then come back as "BobJonesBB" or "BobJonesGH" and so on.

We could just actually post as Manye to show we aren't a bot and stick down warnings on our profile. If not isn't it possible to fix an IP ban should the worst happen? So long as we know who's account is tagged with the fake Manye it shouldn't be a problem to reverse it in that case.

Can't the mods change the banhammer so it also bans said nickname from being used as well? Because, honestly, I can't see any legit users wanting to use the names the spambots use...

Well, one of the other mods seemingly banhammer'd them anyway so the sadly looks like my experiment was a failure.

This is what's supposed to happen with it and it certainly did in the past. Stuff like that, the new users group and bots spamming to 30 posts to avoid banning imply it's not working as intended. I'll give Wooster a poke about it after Christmas, but it's generally not been easy to sort out. We could buff up security but we've been trying to keep the forums easy to join and use, so we've been explicitly avoiding stuff like Captcha for every post, mod approval for accounts/posts and flood control etc.

Wooster already explained why the username isn't banned under the current system two pages ago. Basically, the username is banned... and then deleted, so the username ban disappears.

Wooster wrote:
Hmm, technically it 'does' ban the username. The problem is that when the account is also deleted the ban for said username goes with it. So, for lack of anything better to offer, pick your poison? I can disable deleting the account, but that leaves the obvious problem. IP ban, reporting, and deleting posts all remain in place.

It varies, really. Actually, for a while, I was seeing more gibberish than not. But there's always a trend involving real names. They seem okay and then suddenly it's a viagra convention.

I've seen this at MSN boards a few times. I soon realized that what the bots were doing was quoting words from a previous post by a human user, and then adding a bit of spam beneath it.

I haven't seen that technique here, though we do get the occasional bot that drops a generic "hello, this is a great site" or other greeting, and showing no indication it has any interest in the AA series.

I'm looking into the registered user groups issue. I've also changed a few registration settings; we'll see if that cuts down on bots much.

I hope people don't mind if I step in to punt out the aptly named weeabots. Playing with unicode characters and knowing a couple major Asian languages have actually increased my garbage detection skills.

And yet, I'm still not familiar with this feeling of banning users.

Is it just me, or is the number of sleeper bots rapidly increasing?

Compare this user (not a confirmed bot, just a user) to this other user that joined nearly 24 hours later (again, not confirmed).

What I'm pointing at is the user IDs. In the event the users turn out to be bots, the IDs are 57678 and 58180. There is typically a new user for every ID. And the ID counter increases by 1 with every new user.

Earlier in the thread I mentioned there was an average of 70-80 users registering every day. In the 24 hour window I presented... well, look, I'm hoping my math is way off.

58180 - 57678 = 502

Either that, or that the mods are trying a new thing with IDs/registration.

In the interest of transparency, we did get hit with a very large wave of spambots recently that didn't activate their accounts due to those recent measures I mentioned.

I've updated the current spambot detection a bit more and spoken with Wooster about fixing our CAPTCHA setup if that doesn't help.
Hi! I've largely stepped back from C-R due to life stuff. Please contact one of the other staff members for help!
