Actually it sounds like there might me some meaning and depth in that ending....I'd need to watch it myself to make that judgement.

Um, that was kinda the point of the movie. Gallipoli was one of the greatest military disasters of all time, the fight was pretty much pointless. The Australians and New Zealanders kept on sending in waves of men just to die, and in the end we never did take Gallipoli.
I mean, our troops did get sent to Egypt first to train. I've forgotten where he actually got to, but I do believe he arrived at Gallipoli...yes, if memory serves right, he did. And I think that ending holds a reference to important historical evidence. I had to watch it several times while I studied the Gallipoli Campaign in my two year "Australian History" course.

It would have been fine if they didn't throw a very..strange element into the mix. One that had no build-up to it. It's like they were hitting a dead end with the plot, and decided to toss something in that seemed sensible, to them.
But where it was just RANDOMLY thrown in, it wasn't executed right in my opinion.
