We seem to quite like them, as apparent by how I've seen quite a bit of discussion, so what're your favorites? (Movie versions work too, I assume, since they're basically the same.. except not live).

JC Superstar for the win.

Assassins is probably one of the best musicals I've ever been to. It was made better in that Mario Cantone played the crazy assassin in a Santa costume who kept talking into a tape recorder. That alone made me love this play.

Avenue Q definately deserves a mention. There's not much that could top singing muppets with messed-up lives. I pretty much overplayed the soundtrack, though, so I've kinda gotten sick of it.

The Producers was a great one, too, if not for the sheer fact that the whole play basically felt like it was telling a realistic, fantastic story that was hilarious at the same time.

Well, I've never seen any live, except for one, Spamalot.

Spamalot was great. It was hilarious to the point my sides were hurting.

The others, I've only seen the movie. RENT, Phantom, and the Producers...

Favourite would have to be the Lion King. Damn, those puppets were good. I did almost get whacked over the head by a bird, though. Ack
I also love Chicago, I've seen the live show, and the movie version (although it was kind of ruined by my obsessive PW fangirling during the court sequence), I like the Producers movie, and although I've only seen clips and heard some of the songs, Avenue Q looks hilarious. I'm gonna have to drag my mates down to London to see that one day...
Oh, and when I was on holiday in Ibiza, the reps did low budget versions of Broadway musicals. They were very good, considering the fact none of them where actors. They did the only version of Mulin Rouge that I've liked, so that counts for something, right?
And I have nothing but respect for anyone who can dress in a Grim Reaper outfit, with a spotlight on them for 10 minutes, while I was boiling in jeans and a T-shirt.

I saw Phantom of the Opera(Canadian cast) live in Edmonton, Alberta in 1995 with a college friend of mine. It was the most AMAZING production I'd ever seen and I enjoyed myself immensely. Edgy Thinks

Wait, how could anyone do a live version of 'Moulin Rouge!'? :F I generally thought that that would be a technical impossibity, especially with props like the giant elephant. (Which really existed funnily enough.) Then again, I suppose they did the best they could do with their budget, and it's the acting that matters most :)

So yes, I like 'Moulin Rouge!', 'Cats', 'Les miserables', 'Joseph and his Marvellous Techincolour Dreamcoat'... in short, I like most musicals. Except Rocky Horror, I don't like it at all :F

But my favourite has to be JC Superstar ^_^

Aside from that, I can't think of any.

Avenue Q.'s a win.

That little skit is used too much in parodies though, it's not really funny anymore...

y do you guys like broadway music explain please?

Personally, I like it for many reasons. For one thing, the music often ties in with a central story (not always), but it works to develop characters, create settings, and express emotions, often better than through simple dialogue. Also, many musicals have very well-written lyrics and melodies, and as a composer I get a lot of inspiration from them. Finally, I like it because I'm a straight guy and I get to laugh at people who think musical theater is "soo gaaaaay". Anyway, this puts me in the mood for a little Bat Boy: The Musical. Recommended for any fans of the genre.

The Producers is downright hilarious. I loved the original movie, and the musical only improved on a masterpiece.

Little Shop of Horrors is Faust meets pure fun. The reprise of Somewhere That's Green is darn poignant, though.

West Side Story needs no explanation. Bernstein + Shakespeare = incontrovertible perfection.

I HATE Rent. I was forced to see it with my sister and her friend since they didn't have a ride and I didn't feel like going out twice. I thought it was pointless and I sympathized not once for any of the characters. All I saw it as was: "I have AIDS. That sucks." Nothin' doin'.

And I have yet to see Spamalot and Avenue Q. The soundtrack to Spamalot is phenomenal, though, so I can only imagine the laughs combined with the onstage performance. (We were reading Le Morte d'Arthur in English III when I first heard the soundtrack; needless to say, "His Name Is Lancelot" stuck with me every time I read about him and it was hard to suppress a laugh). Edgy
