Real simple. Basically, just talk about your favorite giant robot shows. Mine, aside from the sub-genre categorization, aren't in any particular order.

Super Robot
Top wo Nerae! Gunbuster - A classic that's jam-packed with emotion and power, not to mention hard work and guts. Seeing as the DVD boxset has been available in the US for a while now, I'd say it's a must-buy.
Mobile Fighter G Gundam - See GaoGaiGar below, it's mostly there for the same reasons.
Yuusha-Oh! GaoGaiGar & FINAL - This is one of the single manliest shows ever created. There's plenty of yelling and over-the-top attacks that ought to be impossible even in a fictional world. The only series I've seen that trumps it in these areas is...
Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann - "WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK I AM?!" God, I wasn't sure what to think of this near the beginning, but it eventually became some kind of snowball of awesomeness rolling down a hill covered in Bruce Willis and Mr. T clones. There is little more badass than Gurren-Lagann.

Real Robot
Turn-A Gundam - My absolute favorite Gundam series, and one of the few which had a main character who was actually likable for me. Not only is Loran generally a nice guy, but he's an excellent pilot. Aside from the Moonlight Butterfly and the I-Field, Turn-A's arsenal is fairly minimal, but Loran manages to kick all sorts of ass with it throughout the course of the series.
After War Gundam X - Again, another nice change of pace for the Gundam franchise. It could have had an excellent ending had they been allowed 10 more episodes, but they did fairly well with what they had.
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam - It's an odd relationship I've got with this one. Love the series, hate Kamille. Maybe one of the reasons I like it so much is because of how much he gets jerked around?

Hybrid Robot
Neon Genesis Evangelion - True, Gainax has been whoring it out, and most fans are way more obsessed with it than they ought to be, but the fact remains that this was an awesome series.

I... I'm not a big fan of mecha anime. Actually, I quite dislike it. Watching things get blown up so many times and hearing people talk about robots and... well, it's great for a little while, at least.

Anyway, I suppose I'll say...

Neon Genesis Evangelion. At first I wasn't interested, but then a friend convinced me to watch it. I'm not far into the series yet, but I am enjoying it. All of the psychology in it is interesting, and the Eva units are well designed. With the new movies coming out over the next few years, I can't wait to see where the series will be taken. Especially with the live action movie, with it meant to be going mainstream and all.

Ghost in the Shell. This... I hated it at first. But, having nothing else to watch at 1 in the morning while waiting for Samurai Champloo to start, I didn't have much choice. I've come to love the Tachikomas, but I can't quite follow the plot. Then again, I started half way through.

I suppose Max/Franziska and Ron/Dessie. You should too.

Neon Genesis Evangelion, I really liked. They remade it with flashy graphics in Japan and I also like Ghost in the Shell. Evangelion got too weird for me in the last episode though.

Bokurano, Sousei no Aquarion, and Evangelion.

I think Magic Knight Rayearth counts to an extent but I might get strange looks if I say it.

I like Robotech. The technology actually makes sense to me, compared to other mecha-based series. A humanoid form is horrendously inefficient for aerodynamics and such, but they actually justified its usage here to some extent.

Or maybe I'm just more of a dogfight-whore than a mechfight-whore. The samurai duel dynamic never appealed much to me in this genre.

According to Anime News Network it is...

Anyways, my friend tried to get me into Gundam Seed and Destiny, but I just couldn't like them. He also tried to get me to like Baldr Force EXE, but I found it really strange... Then I found out it was based on a hentai game... Apparently he's into animes based on hentai games... >_> Overall, I haven't really watched enough mecha animes to choose a favourite. Yet...

GL is pretty much the most overrated robot show in a long time.

Also, Eva's not really a "mecha" anime, regardless of big robots being in the series. It was supposed to be the "anti" mecha show.

Consider it's success as you will.

As for me, I'm old school. Mazinger and Getter are all I need.

Fuck yes. THAT is what it's all about. Give this mofo the prize.

Diebuster would've made the list for me, but I wanted to keep it as short as I could, and GaoGaiGar edged it out just a bit. But yeah, Diebuster for the fucking win.

Big O is pretty sweet, too. Gotta love the atmosphere and the Batman homages. Just didn't quite hit the "OMFG EPIC" button that the other shows on my list did. That's not to say it wasn't awesome, it's just that my standards have skyrocketed recently.

And Eva is mecha. Get over it.

Eva is as much a mech show as Ghost in the Shell is.

As in, it's not.

The robots of Eva are secondary to the plot, at best--replace them with tanks, jets, whatever, and EVA is pretty much the same show. The robots are there, but they aren't very integral to the series.

If you can remove the very thing that makes a show "mecha" with no consequence, it's not a mecha show.

Also I forgot to mention this, but Patlabor is probably the best mecha series. I love Getter and such but Patlabor just has a way with mecha that not only make them seem realistic but spends the time to develop a world in which they could actually "exist" instead of "lol look this guy with faggy sunglasses yells a lot."

Bite your tongue. If it wasn't for Evangelion, we wouldn't have Gundam Wings or Jinki Extent and many other mecha series.

And, the robots are quite important to the series.

No, they're not. The only real plot device that requires the mecha is "Shinji's mom" being supposedly inside EVA-01. Even still, Eva could have easily been a military anime, or a "human battle" series. Unlike Gundam (the original), Patlabor, Gunbuster, the mecha of EVA are secondary to the characters and their interactions, which is the great oversight most people make about Eva's mecha. In a series like Gundam, the mecha are "tools" through which military battles are fought, but their reasons for existing and their usefulness are a much more major part of the series. The same is true for Patlabor: the mecha exist within the "world" and because of it, not just because they wanted to "upend the conventions of mecha anime" which Eva at least attempted to do.

And if we lost those two, I don't think anyone would really care that takes mecha shows seriously. Wing is probably the worst thing to happen to Gundam till Seed and possibly 00.

Eva perhaps could have been one of those other things, but they used mecha as a vehicle, which is why it falls into that category. Honestly, even if Mobile Suit Gundam hadn't had giant robots, I would still have watched it. It's a good enough war story to stand on its own, the robots are just decoration. Yet it's still generally referred to as mecha, and why? Because it did feature giant robots, much like Eva. And honestly, the Angel fights and Misato's crazy operations were some of the best parts of Eva.
