Been trying to figure this one out since I started liking it during Season Two. So, since Season 4 is coming up June 4th (6th?), I figured I'd open the debate on a neutral field.

Me, I'm calling it a cartoon. As engrossing as the plot becomes with time, it isn't animé due to its French origins. A common counter-argument is that "animé" is a borrowed French word anyway, but the connotation is too deeply ingrained with Japanese animation for me to buy it.

EDIT - FATAL ERROR: Crap, wanted this in Interrogation Room. Move, please.

'Anime' is from the French verb 'Animer' meaning to 'give life' or 'to be lively' 'Animation' and 'Animate' also come from this verb, so the Japanese aren't the only ones borrowing it.

It's definitely a cartoon, a pseudo-anime maybe, but not a genuine one.

Anime = Cartoons.

Anime is not a 'higher form' of cartoons. Anime is just the Japanese term given to cartoons.

Exactly.

I'd dare say it's animated sequential art movie originating from France. (Lyoko was done by a french studio for an American audience, IIRC)

Well, it's going to be a cartoon one way or another. Calling it anime would really depend on your particular opinion of what defines anime. As in, do you solely consider cartoons that come from Japan to be classified as anime, or do you consider all foreign animation to be so?

Hence the debate. And why I want this topic moved to Interrogation Room.

It might be better than Othello though. Because Othello is fucking terrible.

Well, they're different genres, so they have different standards and different audiences. When I think "cartoon" I think ages five to ten, with a few exceptions... Family Guy, for instance. Anime is more teens and up, with a drawing style tailored more toward beauty than crude efficiency.
Othello's bringing mediocrity back.

But they're not 'genres' in the sense that they are different things. Anime is not 'for older people' nor is it 'more sophisticated.' Anime in Japan defines animation as a whole, but yes, the term does for most outside audiences denote 'Japanese.'

However, that doesn't mean one is the other--trust me, there are enough stupid, horrible Japanese cartoons to match Cartoon Network's drivel--if anything, however, anime is treated as a 'respectable' genre (as in, people know it reaches a wider audience and can make money) than Western animation does, which seems to be stuck in the mindset of 'for kids only.' This isn't set in stone, obviously, but it's how the situation works--it's culture, more than anything.

But, anime = cartoons and cartoons = anime so the point still remains that it's the same thing, save perhaps that it was not originally created in Japan. In that sense, then no, it is not "anime."

Stepping beyond the debate for a moment, I'd like to remind all involved that new episodes start June 5th at 7:00 EDT. Physical evidence may be procured as necessary at that time.

And as long as we're making farfetched CL/Shakespeare comparisons, William Dunbar is the new Iago.

I think it's both. :will:
Code: Lyoko would probably fit into the anime category due to it's style of drawing, but I see elements of 'cartoon' in there as well.
Shakespeare, Shakespeare, Shakespeare... I got nothing.
Yes, I dared to bump a topic.

In Japan, it is anime because anime is the term for all animation there.

Everywhere else it's a dirty French piece of shit.

Don't you dare do it again. Especially since this isn't interesting in the least anymore.
