I watch A LOT of bad movies for the sake of watching them (I run a bad movie review site because of this tendency), but the movie's I actually like, despite a lot of derision, are:

7. Dan in Real Life (I'm a huge Steve Carrell fan, but even if he hadn't been in this movie I would have liked it. It was like little Miss Sunshine injected into a romcom and I loved it. It was sweet and sad and very close to reality in many ways. It got torn apart by critics, but I think it's definitely one of my favorite recent movies.)

6. Legend (Tim Curry at the Darkness=epic, one of my fav movies as a kid.)

5. A View To A Kill (Arguably the worst bond film to those who have never seen "Die Another Day", Christopher Walken just makes this movie for me. He's such an awesome villain I can't help but love it.)

4. The Abominable Dr. Phibes (The worst Vincent Price movies ever concieved, but I actually find them a funny watch. Seriously, just get a bunch of friends and watch it. you'll laugh so hard.)

3.Soylent Green (I've rarely met someone who's seen this largely unknown Sci-fi classic, let alone like it. It's amazing and hugely underrated, and worth seeing.)

2. Network (The movie that spawned the famous phrase "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore" is a brilliant satire on humanities tendency to move in a pack and lost of individuality in the media age. I've never met someone (who isn't a film major and trying to sound superior by saying they like it) who genuinely enjoyed it ore even was willing to admit they'd seen it.

and...*drumroll please*

1.Dr. Strangelove (or How I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb). I've seriously never, ever met another person who's liked this, and it's like my fav movie (tying with V for Vendetta and Maltese Falcon). I don't get it, is it because it's black comedy?

You are not alone.

As for me, To Kill A Mockingbird. Everybody I know tells me it's horrible because it's not in colour (no, I'm not kidding, that was their actual reason) and it was made fourty years ago so they'll never bother seeing it. It's got a beautiful storyline, brilliant characters and great acting. Times like this I wonder where the fuck our generation will end up...

I'm not just talking about my friends. I'm talking to random people in my classes I got into conversations with. I'd be like, "Yeah, I love Dr. Strangelove." and they generally respond with, "Eeew, really? I hated it! It was boring!" I mean how could you not love Peter Sellers going, "Gentlemen, you can't fight in here. This is the War Room!" I tend to follow up their response with "What about Soylent Green?" the response for that though is generally, "Soylent what?"

Harry, you're not alone. I love to Kill a mockingbird. It's such a great movie and Gregory Peck is absolutely amazing. It doesn't have to be color to be awesome.

I'm sorry, but you guys seem to hang with people who have no taste in movies.

It's a bit of a generation gap thing.

With my TKAM dilemma, the main problem is that they perceive anything as old as bad. Blinded by current movies, they often compare the old to the new. By making wild assumptions, they assume that because it was made in a not-so technologically advanced age in comparison with ours, it woud not be good.

Semi-funny story, I was talking to somebody about TKAM. They claimed it was shit and then proceeded to claim that they had given it negative reviews on some site which ultimately lead to it being taken down. Naturally, I called their bluff and asked them what site. They gave me it, and true to their word it wasn't there. However, it wasn't there from the beginning.

People will do anything for attention. :edgeworth:

Harry, you took the words right out of my mouth. That's a good way to describe why people find something wring with genuinely good older movies. With Soylent Green though, I think it's more a case of obscurity than anything else. It flew in under the radar and has stayed there because it never developed much of a fanbase (if it had it would have resulted in what I like to call "Austin Powers syndrome).

and johnny, I don't hang with many other English major (I find a lot of them to be very close-minded and very political)...but I do have to talk with them because they're in my discussion section for a quarter.

How does an obscure movie generate such a catchphrase commonly known?

Ask someone if they've ever seen Solyent Green and they'll stare at you like you're nuts or just say no and be polite about it.

As for the quote, it's listed in the AFI top 100 movie quotes of all time, but that doesn't mean people know where it's from. A lot of people don't know where "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it any more!" is from, or "If You build it, he will come" or even "What we've got here is a failure to communicate" and they all made the list too. Obscure movies often have quotes that make their way into popular culture, but that doesn't mean that the movie itself is well-known.

I have some kind of pretentious hatred toward TKAM because it's such a bastardized, stripped down, uninviting alternative to the book. Of course movies can't always be 100% accurate but this one just seemed to throw things left and right and it was like "WTF?"

One that I like, but alot of people I know don't like is Mel Brook's "Robin Hood: Men In Tights"

I thought it was a very good parody of many Robin Hood movies (Prince of Theives and the Robin Hood from the 30s are well represented). A few of my friends disagree. I certaintly think its better than many of the parody movies that have come out lately.

I studied film in school, so I have a pretty broad range of tastes. Some of my fellow students did not like Citizen Kane, but I thought it was good (it suffers from being from a different time,so people think it is boring). Also, some of the people I talk to about film have different opinion on what type of films are good. For example, I have a friend that hates Charlie Chaplin, but I think he is great and I love his films.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE, Robin Hood: Men In Tights. I'm a medievalist and I still love it to pieces. It might be that I'm just a geek for Mel Brooks Films/TV shows (I own most of 'em) but it's just such a great parody of a classic work...And the "Men in Tights" song is great. Brooks had a rule of taking something and "Stretching it an inch" and that's what I think makes his works so attractive to me, they're funny with out being waaaay too over the top, which seems to be where most parody movies seem to be lately.

Wow, I'm glad I'm not alone in my liking of this movie. A medievalist you say? Might you be a fan of Chaucer?

I love that show. Now I want to watch Spaceballs again. This will mean going to my parents house to find it. Wish me luck fellow forum dwellers.

Also, (not really sure if this applies because I think only me and three other people I acutally know have actually seen the film) Weirld Al's "UHF." They used to play this on Comedy Central alot. It is a movie full of film, tv, and music parodies and was made by none other than the man famous for his musical parodies. I know it was very underated when it came out (went up against the original Batman and other Summer Blockbusters in its day), so I'm not sure how its received in other parts of the world.

Full Metal Alchemist: Conqueror of Shamballa.
I particularly enjoyed it.
I see some of the criticism, however, i still think it was a better way to end the anime series than episode 51.

Oh, and also The World is Not Enough, I don't see why some people dislike it...
I mean, compare it to Die another Day, that one gets a deserved slating, however, I liked TWINE.

I think Tomorrow Never dies and Goldeneye are the better Pierce Brosnan Bonds, but The World Is Not Enough wasn't bad, at least not in the way Die Another Day was, it was just could have been better in someways....like not having denise richards in it.

God you people keep listing movies I love.. Dr. Strangelove? Awesome movie. Also, people didn't like 300 or Casino Royale? THOSE WERE FJKDSLF AMAZING!!!!

Alright, movies I absolutely adore that others seem to hate and I HAVE NO IDEA WHY they don't like them!

Death to Smoochy. Seriously, I love this movie so much I cannot help myself but watch and rewatch it whenever possible. Friends come in all sizes!

Howard the Duck. What can I say? I grew up watching this movie

Let's Go to Prison! Hahaha.. I don't care what anyone else says, this one cracks me up with it's weird humor

I watch a ton of bad movies that are meant to be bad, mostly horror films. Those don't count, though, because it's pretty much assumed people will hate them for being bad, and they're supposed to be! They're still awesome.

I do the same thing. Ghoulies is the ultimate "It's so bad, it's awesome" movie in the horror genre.
