:eh?: How do you have BIBLE FANFICTION??? You can't just ADD stories to the Bible!! It's the Bible for crying out loud!!! Also, Jesus x ANYONE has got to be the biggest sin that someone could think of. HE'S JESUS!!! HE DOESN'T "X'" ANYONE! EVER!!! Now you're all just gonna say you're "joking" right? Well it still counts as a sin and you must repent before it's too late. Good day.

P.S. I'd read this manga. Actually, I'd like there to be MORE manga about historical events.

It's only a sin if you believe in that religion, you know.

Also, fanfiction isn't adding stories to the Bible. It's not like they go "oh horse shit, now we have to reprint it with more Judas x Jesus stories."

And why is it a sin to think that a young Jewish man would have had sex? The man was obviously married. Maybe not gay, (sorry fangirls! I know he's quite the bishie. :< ) but to believe Jesus was 1) a whitey and 2) not married would mean he'd basically be a Harlem Globetrotter hanging out with a bunch of Mongolians--out of place and weird.

As for the historical manga, there are plenty. They're just not popular in the states.

I didn't really mean anything about reprinting the Bible. I just meant something along the lines of "Making a Bible fanfic would be basically like making a fanfic about the Holocaust." Now, I don't mean this in a way that says the Bible is like the Holocaust, I'm just giving an example of how making fanfics of historical events just seems really strange to me.
Also, I don't believe he's white. I don't remember ever saying he was white. He was born in the Middle-east. White people are from Europe. I also don't remember ever saying anything about marriage either. But he wasn't married. That's just a rumour created by Dan Brown to publish a story he made 'cause he was bored. Well, the term "married to his work" might be true.
Lastly, I'm not from the States, but Canada. Although, most publishing companies ARE American, so I guess you have a point.

"The West," Then, does that fit you better? And since most english translation manga companies are stationed in the United States, there's no real reason to bother with semantics here, unless you want to be annoying about it? They're not popular outside of Japan would work well too, if you want to be a stickler about "What does the West" imply.

And I don't really see a connection between a historical atrocity and a religious piece of literature, but I will give you points for having the strangest use of 'The Holocaust' as an attempt at point making I've seen.

As for whether Jesus would have been married, it's not a rumor created by a singular, modern, bored author of fanciful fiction--it's a theory that has been around for ages. Since the "Biblical History" of his life is really one of the only sources--others either being ignored because they contradict his "holiness" or just because they can't provide enough evidence--it becomes a matter of finding out how the authors of each gospel twisted words, manipulated language, and implied the original meaning of the untranslated texts. Since the books make no reference either way, as in, "married," or "unmarried," the debate tends to come to a grounding halt (well, sort of). The cultural relativity of the time, that is, Jesus as a historical, real person, would lead to the conclusion that he lead a normal Jewish life--which would include marriage.

Well, Osamu Tezuka published a rather large collection of manga about Buddha, so it's not like no one ever writes or creates "historical" religious texts / fiction (historical because religious beliefs are somewhat contentious with "history). It's just that some groups, namely Christianity and Islam, tend to be extremely vitriolic about denouncing such 'expression.'

I mean, American comics routinely take mythological / religious figures and turn them into superheroes or villains--and of course you have the extremely parodic Battle Pope, etc. So "fanfiction" extended beyond "Jesus butt sex" is pretty common.

I don't know, I think a Bible manga would be alright. I'm from the sect of belief that the Bible isn't ment to be taken as a literal work, but as a metaphor as to how a person should live their life morally (not in the modern sense of Christianity, in the whole 'Love thy neighbor as you love God' type way). Looking at it that way, manga and comics might be the best way to show this. There's a lot that's lost in the words of the Bible that's either taken too literally or too loosely.

On American comics, though, religious undertones aren't that hard to make. Cloth your villian in red and, bing! He's a satanic figure >_>

But Battle Pope is love XD

I was actually referring to ACTUAL Biblical "character" usage, in comics like Preacher, Lucifer, etc. As for satanic figures, it depends on how you mean 'satanic' and what villains--some are just corruptions of mankind's "Will to Power" (Luthor), psychopaths (Joker), or Faustian villains (Dr. Doom). Some are just amoral (Thanos).

Oh, okay. I wasn't too sure what you ment before >_>

And by 'satanic', I ment literally representing Lucifer.

What I was trying to say (I know it wasn't anywhere near articulate) is that in any kind of media, you can put biblical references and not many people will notice them, either because their obscure or they're some sort of action (take, in Death note, L washing Raito's feet), and not too many people will notice it, but if you're trying to establish a Christ figure and a Satan figure, it's not too hard.

I gues it doesn't make much sense, actually...

If you're looking for Lucifer then there is, um, LUCIFER :) Cracking comic spun out of SANDMAN. The Vertigo U generally is full of angels and demons and some of them even have sex. As far as I know none of the creators have yet been struck by lightning :godot:

I see what you're saying, but to an extent that's almost dangerously close to "looking to hard." Not that those things are not there, but sometimes people try too hard to see what isn't there--especially so in media outside of the onlooker's cultural points of reference. (I'm not arguing you on the Death Note thing, since there are some obvious scenes of the manga making Light into a twisted Messianic figure.)

However, you'd want to be careful with trying to identify a Christ figure--being a hero and being a messiah are different. Most heroes, say, Superman, aren't Christ figures, they're more Herculean / Mythical. Messianic figures are usually martyrs for a greater cause.

As for Satanic, that gets sticky as well, since most people don't even realize that Lucifer, Satan, and assorted other names are all different beings. Satan is the accuser / tester of faith ("Devil's Advocate," if you will) while Lucifer is the fallen angel who defied God and was cast out after a failed rebellion.

You know...

I was thinking about a Bible manga, at this thing I went to during the summer.
I was thinking
"Damn, they're going to have to rent out an entire library to store it all, if they plan to do the whole thing."

It was after a talk about LAzurus.
I've never liked the idea of Zombie Lazarus.

OK, I'm done talking.

Maybe.

A Bible Manga? How would that work? Adam and Eve trying to figure out how to have sex? Moses having a magical crystal for his rod? How could they do Revelations? Oh, and I don't even want to imagine what they would do with the Song of Solomon. Graphic depictions of Cain killing Abel with loads of gore? Man, this book could be so offensive.

⌠No daddy, this isn▓t right, please stop,■ Jesus pleaded as God rolling him over onto his back and began sucking Jesus▓ cock. ⌠Ahh ahhh ahhhh!■ Jesus shouted as he came again, filling God▓s mouth with sperm to the point where it poured out of God▓s mouth and mixed into his long white beard. ... There already is at least 1 anime done on the bible. It was from the 80s or very early 90s from what I could tell, it used to come on that christian cable channel, whatever that is (always forget the name) TBN or something like that. Tezuka has been dead for nearly 20 years. And he worked on ANOTHER Bible related series; this one is entirely new. They were just stating that it's not the first time Christianity and manga/anime have been smooshed together.

So this is the rule, eh? The moment something makes it into a manga, it instantly has to have homosexual dojinshi and fan-fiction? No matter what it is? Apparently it must be so looking through some of the comments on this thread... rofl...

Uh, Bible Fanfiction and homosexual "doujinshi" has existed way before this manga was even conceptualized. If I remember, Judas / Jesus slash was quite popular for a while.

Japanese have known what Christianity "is" since the Jesuits tried to scare them into converting back in like, the 16th century?

Didn't work that well--although depending on how you like your irony, the shogun ordered all the Jesuits killed by crucifixion, which is pretty hilarious. It did, however, cause Japan's seclusion from the world due to a Christian uprising:

"During the early part of the 17th century, the shogunate suspected that the traders and missionaries were actually forerunners of a military conquest by European powers. Christianity spread in Japan, especially among peasants. The shogunate suspected the loyalty of Christian peasants towards their daimyos and were severely persecuted. This led to a revolt by persecuted peasants and Christians in 1637 known as The Shimabara Uprising which saw 30,000 Christians samurais and peasants facing a massive samurai army of more than 100,000 sent from Edo. The rebellion was crushed at a high cost to the shogun's army. After the eradication of the rebels at Shimabara, the shogunate place foreigners under progressively tighter restrictions. It monopolized foreign policy, and expelled traders, missionaries, and foreigners, with the exception of the Dutch and the Chinese."

So, I'm pretty sure the Japanese know what Christianity is. However, they don't seem to have appreciated "the good word" since, you know, they don't fold their religious ideology like a card table and weren't particularly scared of the Jesuits or the Spanish that supported them.

(The funny anecdote here is that the Jesuits work was originally undone by a Spanish sailor, who, upon crashing in Japan with his crew, tried to scare the samurai summoned to the scene by pointing to a map, saying "this is all we control." The Samurai then asked how they did that, and the sailor, being a smug ass, said "we first send our priests, the Jesuits, to do the spiritual conversion for us." The samurai thanked him, then cut his head off, took his map, and reported this to the shogun. Hilarity ensued.)

(Don't you people ever open a goddamn history book before opening your mouths?)

This tale gained some fleeting media attention, once upon a time.

All I have to say is that I hope they don't do a literal interpretation and go with, say, Paradise Lost!Satan. Because he was pretty interesting. And the actual text is kind of dry, even if the stories are pretty rockin'. LOL CHRONICLES. LOL LEVITICUS. Also the adaptation of Exodus will probably not be as rockin' as the Prince of Egypt was but that's because it won't have epic musical numbers or anything.

Also.

I hope there are gag 4koma. IT WOULD BE EPIC.

High Priest: Hey, hey, Jesus!

High Priest: Should we pay taxes to Caesar even though the only one deserving such riches is God?

Jesus: Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and give to God what is God's. : |

High Priest: ...Nyoron~ : 3
