For those of you who are unaware, the anime licensing company ADV films, famous for shows such as Neon Genesis Evangelion and Full Metal Panic, has pretty much imploded upon itself with all current releases being cancelled, and nearly all of it's series' being transferred over to Funimation.

Apparently, It's causing somewhat of an uproar in the Anime community. Just checking in to see if anyone else has heard anything about this upset.

Wait. What?

Damn. Guess BGC Tokyo 2041 definitely isn't happening now...

Who knows. The word is that ADV is still fighting for the licenses for 23(?) titles, despite the fact that they have almost no funding, or corporate organization for that matter.

I did hear about this, and I'm sad. Especially since ADV has been around for so long! ;_;

First Geneon, now ADV... who'll be next? ;_; Am I just going to have to resort to downloading anime? >_<

ADV did some of my alltime favorites (Blue Seed, BGC Tokyo 2040, Tekken, the Sonic OVA), so I'm still rather saddened by this. Like I said above, so long to BGC 2041...

Holy crap, not ADV! They were huge! They did so much good work! I'm really unhappy to hear this.

Edit: Well, after reading all the enclosed articles/blog entries, I'm now a little less upset about the loss. I'm sorry to hear that they cared little for the people paying their salaries, and Funimation actually does really good work despite what some people say. I hope these series will be given the respect they deserve by Funi.

I guess Eva could only keep them afloat for so long.

Looks like that's it for the live-action movie, too.

That sucks...

I loved the Noir series and I have all the DVDs.

Post subject:  Re: The Death of ADV films

I was kind of suspicious with the going-ons at ADV when they stopped Newtype USA. >_< (Which sucks, because I LOVED that thing. When I went to Japan, I definitely bought Newtype there. ^_^)

I was reading some of those articles, and holy crap, I'm glad that my copy of Welcome to the NHK vol. 5 is coming my way. O_O I didn't know that they just stopped things all together. >_<

But yeah, ADV did a lot of my favorite series. Such as BGC Tokyo 2040, Noir, Madlax, Coyote Ragtime Show, Evangelion, etc... ;_;

Is Evangelion going to stay in print? ...I still need to buy it.

This sucks. At least their licenses are going to good people like Funimation.

How certain are we that this is true? I mean, the first two links only state that Funimation has acquired distribution rights to some of their titles. While that does suggest it, it doesn't really confirm anything. And the last link struck me more like a blog, so I'm not sure I wanna trust it? Only about a month or two ago, I was at an ADV panel hosted at a con by one of it's head members, and nothing seemed to be wrong. They even talked about some new stuff they were releasing.O_O

Did anyone ask them about their situation? They're obviously going to put on a charade during a public appearance.

...it's amazing how I can read this quote and not laugh my butt off. Not saying the company's bad, but they've certainly come a long way since DBZ...

ADV going down...

Well, they did very good job but, I still don't like the subs in Cromartie High School.

I know rite? It's the only project of theirs I haven't liked...but then again, I don't really like it period, dubbed or not. Take FMA and Death Note as proof of how great they are.

Actually, Viz does Death Note.

The only thing that really bugs me about Funimation is that sometimes the subtitles get "stuck" on the screen and I have to rewind/fast-forward slightly in order to fix it. >_< Besides that, no problems with Funimation. ^_^

Gozu wrote:

My thoughts exactly. >_< I guess I'm going to have to import the manga now. *sighs*

No, Viz owns the property. Funimation ran the dubbing. In the same way that Viz owns Yu-Gi-Oh! and 4Kids (adjkflasdkgs) dubs it.

Ah, I didn't know that. But, I guess that's because I don't pay attention to dubs. ^_^;; I'm assuming that they did the subs though, right? I never have problems with the subtitles in from any other company. Just Funimation. >_<

Post subject:  Re: The Death of ADV films

Well, Funimation would probably have the Japanese track on their DVDs (no, I haven't bought any of them...TV's legal AND free!) so they would have subtitles for them.

Post subject:  Re: The Death of ADV films

Geneon, ADV.....we're running out of some very good companies here.
At this rate, we're gonna be stuck with Funimation and 4Kids!
(not that there's anything wrong with Funimation, but do you really want it to come down to this?!)
There are a few good companies still around (to my knowledge), but with two of the big names out of the picture, who knows?
BTW, is ADV REALLY gone? The thread title states that their dead, yet a previous post stated that they're still alive, though pretty much "broken".

They are not dead. Just very broken. Though they are almost dead from what I have read...

Damn, that sort of sucks. I still have some of the ADV subbed DVDs with me here such as Neon Genesis and as well as BGC 2040...and with BGC 2041 shatted itself, this is a dark day in animation :sadshoe:

Damn it American anime industry, you're going down the effing DRAIN. At this rate anime may become pirating-exclusive in America. As tempting as it is, I'm always amused to watch dubs for the (mostly) god awful voices and nothing more. ADV though, I'm kinda sad. NGE was my childhood. O_O

Post subject:  Re: The Death of ADV films

So THAT'S why They took out the Anime Network from the channel listing. And here I thought my cable company was just a group of sadistic capitalist pigs. (Well, they could still be, but still...)

Anyway, on to my rant: Damn it! ADV was actually a GOOD anime dubbing company. I respected them. Why must they die so? Spare them, please, and take... take 4Kids instead! Take THEM!

Here's hoping that even if they go under for good, Anime doesn't die out in America. If it does, we're skewered.

Ehh the people who watched subs in the first place aren't going to be that badly affected. Most dubs are awful anyways... At least, I think so.

Post subject:  Re: The Death of ADV films

Yeah, You are right there but some people *Like my stupid friends....* Refuse to watch an anime unless it has a Dub....Some Dubs are better than Subs though. Cowboy Bebop and Black Lagoon are one that I can get off the top of my head.

Post subject:  Re: The Death of ADV films

Hey, don't mind me. I love subs, too. But sometimes, I just like to lounge around and listen to something my braincells actually understand. I COULD learn Japanese (I have searched the internet and found several introductory courses, and some colleges here actually teach the stuff), but I can't help it if I lose interest. @ languages may be enough for me, anyway... I'm getting sidetracked...

Pokemon's my guilty pleasure, but I know that it's bad XD

I can't seem to watch dubs. For me, the character is dependent on his/her voice, which causes big problems when it comes to the dub.

Post subject:  Re: The Death of ADV films

ADV was going to dub Sgt. Keroro, my favorite anime...

But at least Funimation has the license now!

Too bad they're going to play it on Animax...

I don't get Animax as a channel...

WHY HAS THE WORLD FAILED ME!? WHY!?

Doesn't ADV more or less implode at least once every year or so. I remember hearing similar stories last year or the year before...
