unbeliveable, but transformers can be considered anime. in fact, the entire unicron trilogy was anime, "armada, energon, and galaxy force". galaxy force is transformers cybertron. yeah, leave big toys companies to sign a long term contract with the asain race to produce merchandise that causal fans would waste money on. mind you, not die hard fans. die hard fans consider g1 to be the best.
turning transformers into an anime has hurt more than it has helped. for one thing, marvel comics has turned transformers into it's own universe. i think the term "transformers universe" is more accurate. however, japanesae anime has always lacked continuity. in my opinion, the majority of anime is the equivalent to sub-par storytelling that places more emphasie on potenial rather than execution. shoddy storytelling is what really buried transformers in the grave for the last several years. also, anime has never been known for animation quality. the anime re-uses scenes whereas the scenes should have been altered sightly to fit the enviroment.
allow me to summarize the transformer's anime story: optimus prime transforms into supeer mode, merges with another autobot, and kills megatron. there's your story. dont even get me started on art. the art looks like a bunch a gundams with cracks all over thier armor plating.
even the medicore movie made by steven spielberg is better, why? for one thing, hasbro has invested more toys in this movie. and the sadistic story grounded in realism is more compelling in comparison to the "save the universe" themes of the anime.
i was a big fan of beast machines back in the day. i never had the knack for toys that transform in animals though. the story was dark like the matrix trilogy. i loved the transformer's struggle to maintain balance between organic life and the technological. good graphics that still stad up to today's standard. i think part of it was ruinned because of the lack of vechular allies thoguh. i was thought the vechicons were bad ass though. i think some fans were cheesed off in the fact that rhinox was turned into a bad guy, which could be seen a bold move, taking a big strong friendly sterotype and turning him into a big strong destructive stereotype.
i've never been a harah judge of anime voice acting, so i believe the voice acting is top notch. the sweet sound of optimus prime saying "autobots, role out" has always been a staple of transformers.
i'd hate to anger the asains on this website (pretty much everyone on this website are asain), but G1 was undoubtly made in america. however, i never watched G1 but i doubt i'll start liking it. i wanna mentiont that i didnt like how they just abandoned the fans of the first anime series (robots in diguise) and started a brand new one in an entirely diffrent comtinuity.
i've never been a harsh critic of cell-shading either. my nerdy friends bragged how they wouldnt see any new transformers continuities even if they were in 3-d. apparently, the cell-shading doesnt count as "3-d" enough for them.
transformers animated, however, returns the series to it's cartooon roots. which is okay, so long as the animations dont get reused for virtuallly every episode. in fact, the animators have created diffrent animations for every transformation. even though this series is still anime, it might actually benefit from looking more like a traditional saturday morning cartoon. megatron's old G1 look is okay and i love how this series takes a page from the movies. megatron is no longer 100% invinicble, he is suseptable to having his limbs torn apart like everyother autobot.
however, like almost every transformers series before it, it has got it's major flaws. seriously, the plot is center around a sickly girl who has no real friends? while megatron benefits from his G1 look (probably because he looked terrible in the steven spielberg and the G1 megatron just looks competant in comparison), optimus prime doesnt. c'mon, he's firetruck, not a regular boring trucker's truck. and no super mode?, i'd rather buy the toys of the supporting characters, or even megatron. and i hate megatron
dont get me wrong, i'm very intrigued by the art and style of transformers animated as much as most causal fans of the movie. however, the transformation themselves arent very intriquing. seriously, the animation of the transformations should just come down to a few smooth steps. also, i've never, not even for once, wondered how a vechile part of an autobot would end up where it eventually ended up. if i bought a power rangers toy at big lots, even that would be more sophisticated than the toys in transformers animated.
