I feel the need to watch some anime...
But I don't really care for it.

The last one I watched was Death Note (subbed) and I enjoyed it until that huge spoiler happened and character verb'd.

I guess I liked the mind game aspects of it and the fact it was at least somewhat different then the (Warning: Sweeping generalization ahead) average cliched skimpy clothed highschool girls with magic powers battling evil with panty shots.

Although action is cool too.
Preferably not mech or big buff DB-esqe though.

Monster is perfect for you, but be aware that it's 70 episodes and thus requires a bit of a time investment. If you were able to get through Death Note though, you should do fine.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is even more of an investment. It's a serious epic that spans mass amounts of characters and politics for more than 150 episodes.

Regardless, both are very flawlessly executed.

Manliest story ever, second only to Hokuto no Ken (Fist of the North Star). Who the HELL do you think I am.

Fullmetal Alchemist.

I know it's insanely popular and mainstream, but it's intellectual with some good action in it. :)

Wow! I didn't think anybody but me had heard of that one :D Glad to see there's more Planetes fans out there.

Well one I can recommend is Azumanga Daioh. I have a friend who's also not particularly into anime but likes that one, and for a good reason, it's awesome :)
I would recommend The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, but that one's not for everybody.
Fullmetal Alchemist is a good one, but that's a tad long.
There are quite a few more that I like, but I don't think they're for people who aren't fond of anime.
I'm not coming back. I'm done with this fanbase. You're all up-tight, nit-picking, hypocrites who are TERRIFIED of change. Getting banned just for standing up for myself... I'm never coming back. Goodbye forever you brats.

ttgl, like other gainax shows, revels in how anime it is. i'm not sure if this would put the OP off or give him new appreciation for what the medium can do, but it should be noted regardless.

I'm sorry, but I seriously don't think FLCL is a mindfuck, as you put it. If anything, it actually makes the most sense out of a lot of anime I've seen.

Anyway, Beck Mongolian Chop Squad.

Also, if you like randomness and comedy, I agree with the suggestion of Azumanga Daioh, and add to that the inclusion of Lucky Star and Full Metal Panic Fumoffu. =)

Fullmetal Alchemist -WAIT FOR THE NEW ANIME. EVEN IF IT IS IN A COUPLE OF YEARS, WAIT.
Lucky Star- No. Why are you trying to turn him off of anime? Recommend some not shitty moe shows
Azumanga Daioh-Only if you like japanese humor and cute girls talking about stuff
FMP Fumoffu- Watch a couple of episodes of FMP first. Funnier when you know the characters
Monster- Yes
Planetes- Yes
Beck- Watch the dub.
Paranoia agent-No, unless you are a fan of or know who Satoshi Kon is.
TTGL- mecha with a lot of homages and drills. Watch if you like awesome.
FLCL-Depends on the person. Everything is a metaphor of penises
Legend of the Galatic Heroes-Watch if you fucking love space opera, scifi, or have a lot of time on your hands.

I also recommend Detroit Metal City(Metal parody.), Marimite(http://subatomicbrainfreeze.typepad.com ... _an_1.html),Hellsing ultimate(Fighting evil Nazi vampires and stuff) and Ouran High school host club(http://subatomicbrainfreeze.typepad.com ... ly_an.html)

FLCL was essentially a metaphor for growing up (in a sexual manner and otherwise). It was wacky and zany and a lot of people get caught up in trying to decipher a lot of symbolism in scenes or events individually, which is where they lose it (mostly because they're trying to analyze something that isn't there), but as a whole it's fairly easy to understand. By the time you watch it two or three times, it should all make sense.

Paranoia Agent requires a decent understanding of Japanese society and general pop culture functionality to get the fullest of appreciation, but its more universal messages can be understood with ease. A lot of people I know watched PA and said they couldn't figure out what was going on, which I didn't really get, considering it basically spells it out for you in the final episode.

Regardless, I consider both shows pretty good, Paranoia Agent was one of the best things [adult swim] ever got their hands on.

Also, Beck (as a manga) is one of my absolute favorite series ever and I would completely and totally recommend it to a newcomer to the medium. The anime is a bit of a condensed version near the end and I was not a fan of actually hearing the music (better left to the imagination), but it was still very good.

On the subject of Planetes, it's supreme and I think a lot of people owe it to themselves to watch it.

Well, I haven't seen too much anime myself, but I would recommend:
FMA. Yes, as said before, it's mainstream, but it's also intellectual. It has the right balance of action, plot, Hughes, and comedy. It's not mainstream for nothing, although it is a bit long.
Paranoia Agent. It's confusing at times, but it's really good. Freaky, but not scary. It's also has a few styles; the beginning and end have the same style, but the few middle episodes each have their own style. PA is also very character-heavy. (Not that there are so many characters, but that it's almost completely focused on the characters.)

FMA- No, just no. Manga is much better, read the manga or wait for the new anime series. You won't regret it.
Paranoia Agent-Like holy hell said, if you understand current japanese culture it's a good watch. Otherwise, some of the things that go on in the series will go right over your head. seeing that you're NEW to anime, some of the more action oriented series like Black Lagoon and Cowboy Bebop are more to a newbie's liking. However, if you are overhyped on CB then don't watch it, because you might get disappointed.

There's a new FMA anime coming out? O_O I didn't know that!
I read the manga up to about volume 10 and, personally, it was one of the few instances where I actually liked the anime version better than the manga.

Also Ouran and Hellsing Ultimate are epic win~ <3

I'd have more recommendations, but most of my favorites are probably not the kind of things you're looking for. You might like xxxHolic, though. :)

I agree that it is the manliest anime ever made. But anyone'd bite me in the ass for saying it's been ripped off by new stuff like Naruto or DragonBall. Anyways.
Speaking of mind rape, there's so much out there that'll make your brain either burst in flames or short circuit. It's ridiculous.
Paparika. That movie is such a trip. Watch it sober otherwise suffer consequences beyond just traumatizing confusion.
Paranoia Agent. Of course. Great anime, makes some sense, but try not to get weirded out by the opening, please.

Hokuto No Ken (if you really wanna get into it...) Old school at its finest in terms of the Martial Arts category. It's what the new shonen Martial Arts genre was based on. (watch the mainstream stuff you see nao. TRUUUSSSTTT MEEEE.)

Oh. There's also Tenchi Muyo if you want to see something that involves tons of lasers being shot from psychotic women all aiming for one guy. (what i mean is that they all like him. which gets... really insane because they do fire lasers a lot)

Mobile Suit Gundam (Universal Century(0079-Char's Counter Attack), Wing, 00) Great anime if you like robots shooting each other.
Mazinger/Getter (Great old school anime. A couple of favorites from my mecha category.)

And please avoid Naruto. If you want to keep your sanity, avoid it at all costs. It will make you want to buy margarine... because we still can't believe it's not butter.

Genshiken. It takes a very realistic and honest approach to the Japanese otaku subculture(without all that moe crap like Lucky Star), and does a fine job presenting characters who despise otaku but inadvertantly start to understand their world a little better. I dunno if this is good for people who are still new to anime, but somewhere down the line, this is a must see.

I also support Cowboy Bebop. No matter the retarded fanbase, this show is top-tier, especially for those that want to get into anime a bit more.

While I love Ouran, it's a niche anime. Unless you're a fan of girly anime filled with cute boys or like to make fun of it a lot(which this show does quite well), I don't think this will be worth much of your time.

I always thought that NHK handled this better, though the novel is the best experience. Otherwise Genshiken is a good mix up among all of the action.

Avoiding anime with 'average cliched skimpy clothed highschool girls with magic powers battling evil with panty shots' is hard (oh so hard) but I suggest

If you want to acctualy think about what you're watching:
Earth Maiden Arjuna
Le Portrait de Petite Cossette
Serial Experiments Lain
Haibane Renmei

Other good anime that are a tad easier to understand:
Saikano (She, the Ultimate Weapon)
Pet Shop of Horrors (although the manga is better)
Gunslinger Girl

Hmmm. Well, in my mind, the holy grail of anime for people that don't like anime would be something like

Spirited Away/Howl's Flying Castle/Princess Mononoke. Anything by Hayao Miyazaki, really. (Can you even lump this stuff in with lesser "anime"?)

If you are talking about TV series, then you might try Serei no Moriboto. It's by production IG, and is gorgeously animated. The plot is more serious in tone, featuring the exploits of a female warrior named Balsa as she becomes embroiled in the royal family's internal politics, and as a result has to flee the kingdom.

It's a bit of a cop-out, but Cowboy Bebop is still a very good anime for people not normally into that thing. It's very much like an old school crime drama, only set in space. The production values, soundtrack, and art direction are all very impressive. The characters are likeable, and most people will sympathize with at least one of them. The plot is well written, and alternately features crazy action sequences, somber moments, laugh out loud funny sections, cool sections, or heart breaking moments.

Ahh....someone who wishes to spread the love of anime to others, eh?
Good for you, but you've got quite a road ahead of you.
(Trust me; I've been trying for years!)

Spoiler: If you're trying to appeal to the 20+* club, I be able to offer some advice to increase your chance at bringing 'em into the fold:
-Avoid anime with TOO MANY JPN references unless they have a general grasp of Japanese culture/humor. Don't freakin' assume they do, either.

-Keep staple anime icons (the mecha, the magical girl, etc.) to a minimum. Chances are, they're familiar with the "basic anime" titles like DBZ, Gundam, and Sailormoon, and they're probably not completely leaning toward this anime genre (give it time, though :bellboy: )

-Show 'em something completely different, but not completely out there. Show them a really good show that isn't widely known in the current crowd, but don't freakin' put 'em on a "drug trip". If you have the choice to show either Noir or FLCL, pick Noir. As good as FLCL is for the average anime fan, it may easily turn off newcomers from ever liking anime altogether.

-Aim for the target audience. If they like action, give 'em action. If they like comedy, give 'em comedy. If they like both....go nuts (Ranma 1/2?).

-Know your stuff. A little sidenote goes a long way. I've manage to convince someone to watch Puni Puni Poemi (w/o watching Excel Saga!) after I told 'em the DVD was banned in New Zealand (I actually told him Austrailia...how do I always mix that up!?). Really.

Spoiler: With that said, let's go to my personal list of anime that may help break the mold...:
Cowboy Bebop~
The fact that it's been mentioned countless times in this thread should be an indication....

Noir~
If they're not hooked by the first two episodes, abandon all hope with this show.

Hellsing Ultimate~
Forget the TV series, go straight to the OVAs. It's more accurate to the manga and action buffs should get their fill with this one.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust~
This one falls into the same catagory as Hellsing in that it's a "vampire" anime, but focuses a little more on drama and not so much on the action (I could be wrong).
Don't tell them about the first film, though; the dated animation in the original may scare 'em away.

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion~
If they like mecha anime, but can't stand Gundam, point 'em in to this one. If they like a good story with lots of plot twists but can't understand Neon Genesis Evangelion or Death Note*, give this to 'em.
It'll be worth it just to see/hear their reaction when they see episode 22....

Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal~
Trust me. This'll get 'em.

Goldenboy (?!):
If they are looking for something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from what's advertised to the masses, go for this one...even though it's a bit of a gamble.
Before you flip out, let me explain.
Obviously, this may not be for everyone (DUH!), but once you give 'em the lowdown on the show's premise, they might understand the characters and enjoy the show a little more.
I'll leave it at that. Give it a shot.

Spoiler: And, some to avoid for good reason...:
Lucky Star~
Don't avoid it like the plague, but keep it on hold. At least, until after they've seen enough anime that they'll enjoy "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya".

*Death Note~
Apparently, the idea of killing someone by writing their name in a notebook doesn't appeal to the average viewer.

FLCL~
As I've said before, this one will screw with their mind. Avoid showing them this one unless they insist on it. By the time they do, hopefully they've seen enough anime to get a handle on FLCL by then.

Pani Poni Dash!~
Because Mesousa is too depressing for the average viewer to watch. I've shown the first episode to four different people, and this was their only gripe about the show.
(Poor Mesousa....)

That's all I can think of. I hope this helps.

Blackbird wrote:

That's almost a given. 8 chances out of 10 they'll like these.
I loved "Laputa: Castle in the Sky".....I still do to this day.

[EDIT]
Oops! Forgot one more thing:
-Show 'em some AMVs. That's another good way to introduce 'em to anime, depending on WHICH AMVs you're showing them.

Miyazaki films are where it's at

-Berserk. Although after watching the ending, you'll probably go WTF?!?! BUT read the manga, because it continues forever and ever and is immensely awesome. OK fine, it's all kinds of big muscly men and demons and such, but I love it so, and it's much different than other anime out there.

-Hellsing (original, I really can't stand ultimate. And I had a crush on Integra Hellsing from it, lol)
-Trigun
-Vampire Hunter D and Bloodlust
-Cowboy Bebop
-don't hate me, but Samurai Champloo
- 12 Kingdoms. it's slow at first but picks up. However, it's still a girl getting transported to another world. This anime is based on a novel series, and the anime was put on hold until more books are released.

One thing I notice about the good anime, it's slow to start. about halfway through the series, you can't stop watching it and the story develops into something absolutely amazing... Another thing, most of the time the manga is tons better than the anime.

If you want some really weird choices,
The Wallflower. has bishonen boys looking all pretty, and one girl who very much does NOT want to be the "norm". I'm just like her, lol. She also kicks major ass.

I love anime, but I'm rather picky about it. However, I do like magical schoolBOYS. Kyou Kara Maou, anyone? Basically a lighthearted all male version of 12 Kingdoms, without the kirin, lol.

Also, the old Escaflowne TV series kicks major ass.
If videogames make murderers, then guns kill people and spoons made Rosie O'Donnell fat.
