I notice this place has a distinct lack of mecha talk in anime stuff. So let's get this thing started by me commenting on the latest mecha series I just finished, the 2005 remake/pseudo-sequel of the awesome Super Robot Gaiking, Gaiking: Legend of Daiku Maryu.

Having just finished Code Geass R2 the previous night (wednesday), I was severely depressed by the ending, 'cause I refuse to acknowledge so much nobility in a single heart, even in fiction. So I decided to skim though what I had available to me to get my mood up, and I noticed I had downloaded Gaiking and had yet to watch it. So I started the next day (thursday). Guess what happened.

I was fucking HOOKED.

Seeing the Mighty Dragon Daiku Maryu (aka "El Gran Dragón del Espacio" in its spanish version) made me cry manly tears of nostalgia, remembering my childhood watching the original Gaiking. So I spent that afternoon, the day after, and yesterday's early morning watching the series in a record-beating marathon that I didn't think I'd be able to finish in one piece, and yet I did.

Overall, the series was awesome; the story was very well developed right from the start until the end (though the ending, while good, was a little disappointing as it didn't tie up some loose ends); the animation quality wasn't superb, but it was still great, and the general pace of the series kept me gripping my seat, whether it was with so much stuff going on at the same time or with the fantastic jokes and funny episodes spread through its 39-episode lifespan. Highly recommended for anyone who likes Super Robot mecha anime.

In other news, I'm waiting for the second season of Gundam 00 to finish airing so I can download all 52 episodes in a single sitting, and I'm on the lookout for any other Super Robot or generally mecha anime coming out in the upcoming seasons.

Oh yes, Gurren Lagann is one of the very few series I have awarded a full marks score in MyAnimeList. It's edgy, it's action-packed, it's dramatic, it's funny, it virtually has everything.

I like a lot of the real robot stuff. Mostly the different variations of Gundam though, which pretty much includes everything but Seed and Wing. 00 season 1 was surprisingly good. I was expecting it to be god awful because of how bad Seed was. The last non gundam mecha show that I finished was Eureka Seven (I still haven't finished Gurren Lagann). That show was pretty awesome aside from the ending, but hopefully the movie fixes that. I started watching Code Geass, but after having to endure a friend of mine prattling on about great it was, I dropped it because I was tired of it.

If I had to pick my absolute FAVORITE mecha show, I'd probably have to go with Mobile Suit Gundam or G Gundam. G Gundam's just plain awesome because of all the hilarious over the top stuff they do through the entire show. I loved all of the stereotypes, completely unrealistic fighting moves, the whole rational behind the Gundam Fight (OK SOMEONE NEEDS TO RULE SPACE, I KNOW, WE'LL HOLD A GIANT ROBOT TOURNAMENT TO DECIDE WHO THE LUCKY MUTHA FUGGA IS!), and the random plot twists you'd never expect (Neo Japan: Your brother's evil, you need to kill him. But he's also German and a clone. Also he's good. Also we're evil. And it happens twice! Master Asia's good! NO HE'S EVIL! JUSTKIDDINGHE'SGOOD!). Also, I take an interest in anything that involves people yelling at - and beating the shit out of - each other.

Mobile Suit Gundam is just that once in a blue moon show that redefines a genre. It carved the mold for every character archetype in the real robot genre, and because of this, just about every character is unique and likable. Lt. Bright? Char? Amuro? Salya? All great characters. The plot still holds up to most of the stuff today, and it's kind of hard to believe that a show that focuses so much around war, that actually kills off characters on a pretty regular basis would've been made in the 70s. But that's Gundam for you.

As for upcoming stuff, I've heard Macross Frontier was pretty good. I can't say much about it though as I've only seen the first episode.

Code Geass R2 was shit. Hardly worthy of the mecha genre.

Apologies. Since the opening post mentioned recent titles and asked a question about 'new and upcoming' shows, I imagined a time constraint that wasn't really there.

Well, having such an accomplished mecha pilot as Kallen in the cast, I thought Code Geass deserved at the very least a small position within the genre.

i love big o mostly because even though its an sr show, the mechs are more "realistic" than most rr shows.
