I'm pretty sure we don't already have one of these. So, what do you think? Are you going to watch it this year, or do you think it's overrated? Who should win? Personally, I think I'm going to watch it this year, more out of tradition than actual excitement over any of the films (I think the only one I actually saw was Wall-E). Which brings me to a rant. Why are commercially successful films never nominated for Oscars? It's like all the Academians are snobs or something "Oh, only a certain kind of very dramatic film can enter, blah blah blah." Your thoughts? |

I lol'd at the Jack Black comment on Pixar. They DO win every year. I mean seriously, I was peeved when Persepolis lost to fucking Ratatouille, which definitely goes into my list of Pixar's sucky stuff bucket. |

I liked Hugh Jackman as the host! :D The musical numbers were really entertaining. Penelope Cruz and Sean Penn's wins were surprising to me. I hadn't seen Vicky Christina Barcelona so I didn't know how her performance was. I was hoping for Taraji P. Henson because I loved her in Benjamin Button. I was very pleasantly surprised to see Sean Penn win after Mickey Rourke had won the Golden Globe. He was amazing in Milk. You totally forget it's Sean Penn. XD As for the other acting awards, Kate Winslet was no surprise. Just like Hugh Jackman, I haven't seen The Reader, but I was personally hoping for Angelina Jolie. I thought Changeling was incredible. Too bad it didn't win anything. :( I guess Heath Ledger's post-humous Oscar wasn't that surprising, either, but really... Since he's gone he'll never be talked about or be in another movie again, so I think that the Oscar is his ultimate last goodbye gift. And about the new acting award-giving thing with past winners talking about each nominee... It's pretty long-winded, but I thought it was really sweet. On the other hand, though, it really cements how big and important the acting awards are really blatantly. I know actors are the people we see and are what we really care about, but every other award category is just as important to making a movie what it is. As for Best Picture, Slumdog Millionare was no surprise. I've seen it and although the praise and recognition it's getting might be getting to the point of being ridiculous, it's still a great movie. While on the topic, what was up with the Best Song montage thing? The Wall-E song wasn't even performed... not even recognized. I liked the song that won (it fit perfectly with the happy ending and that dance during the credits was awesome and the song was really catchy), but come on! Wall-E won Best Animated Feature, yeah, but have you really seen an animated movie nominated for so many other awards?! Sure it didn't win any of them, but they should've given it some more recognition. I'm sure they had their reasons.... time and money constraints and whatnot, but it was disappointing. Besides that, I thought the Oscars this year were pretty good. Better than last year. ^_^ (P.S. That song in the middle of the montage with the black guy singing........ was that the Wall-E song? Sure didn't seem like it) |

fatalfeline wrote: (P.S. That song in the middle of the montage with the black guy singing........ was that the Wall-E song? Sure didn't seem like it) First song was "O Saya", by A. R. Rahman, for Slumdog Millionaire. Then, "Down to Earth", by Peter Gabriel, who refused to play in the Oscars, so he was replaced, for Wall-E, and lastly "Jai Ho", also by A. R. Rahman for Slumdog Millionaire. Then, they mixed a bit "Down to Earth" with "Jai Ho". Hey, didn't that black guy's voice sound like Colplay's leader, Chris Martin? It really did to me! |

Quote: Heath Ledger got an award, and he's not even alive. And? The awards were for who were the best of that year, not who were the best and still alive. He's actually the 2nd person to win an Oscar after his death. He most certainly deserved it too, he was great in Dark Knight. |

I agree with you, Johnny Rainbow. Nobody who saw The Dark Knight could have said "Meh, he doesn't deserve it, he's dead". Heath Ledger's Joker won't be ever beaten. In my opinion, it was even far better than Jack Nicholson's, and that's saying A LOT (well, Nicholson was already crazy, so, bonus points for Heath) It was awful news he died. I would love to see the Joker back for another Batman movie... What a pity... |

I don't believe so. Before I saw The Dark Knight, I thought Nicholson had been the best one, but after I saw it, I realised Ledger was MUCH better. I mean, when he did the Joker, you couldn't even tell it was him! The role was pure genius! And his performance was pure genius! |

Hamil, though, he's been the iconic comics Joker, he is the Joker. |

Wait a minute. How did Wall-E get nominated for Original Screenplay (which I'm sure never happened to an animated feature before), yet it has like no actual dialogue for the most part? |
|
| Author: | DeMatador [ Wed Feb 25, 2009 5:08 am ] |
| Post subject: | Re: Academy Awards |
The dialogue is not important. It's "Original" Screenplay. It's been judged by "Originality" and quality, as one element. |

Ah~ I looked it up and apparently it replaced an old category for "Best Original Story". So it's just writing in general right? |

| Post subject: | Re: Academy Awards |
Yup, exactly. Not evenr related to amount of dialogue. |
