I love them both, so it's hard for me to actually choose. But how is this actually a debate?

Augh! This is too hard to choose, as I like them both equally!!! Ok.... I like Star Wars a little bit more since I've been into it longer.... but only by a little bit...

Lord of the Rings. It didn't get crappy like Star Wars did. But then again, Star Wars has been going for much longer.

Star Wars.

In my opinion, it had a better backstory, better (and much more memorable characters-and creatures- such as Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Princess Leia, Darth Vader, Yoda, R2-D2, C-3PO, Jawas, Ewoks, Taun-tauns & Grand Moff Tarkin) and the lightsabers were REALLY cool! I also like the many different kinds of planets and creatures that inhabit them, too--really wacky and wild and some just downright weird but always interesting (and the Taun-tauns were SOOOOOOO cute!)

I also liked the machines, weapons of mass destruction and various vehicles in SW as well such as the Imperial Snow Walkers, the X-Wing, Tie fighter, and the Death Star, to name but a few. I saw "Star Wars," (when I was a kid), "The Empire Strikes Back" (when it came out) and "Revenge of the Jedi" (in college thanks to a friend who had all three movies on DVD) and I loved all three! (I haven't seen any of the Star Wars prequel movies)

I like the Star Wars universe much better than LoTR (I have never seen-nor do I wish to see-the LoTR movies. I read the books and they bored me. My husband likes LoTR. :) ); I saw an animated version of "Lord of the Rings" many years ago and I didn't like that, either. LoTR doesn't speak to me the way Star Wars does and I find LoTR highly dull, complicated and boring.

However, I am of the opinion that-even though I don't like LoTR-it's good if you like both and have a tough time choosing between the two. That means you really like both pretty much equally which is a good thing. Edgy Not everyone likes the same things and that isn't a bad thing by any means. :)

I actually liked JarJar. Yes, you did read that correctly, I actually feel sorry for him, being hated by so many people. I didn't think he was that annoying.

To answer the question, I slightly prefer LotR. Mainly because Gandalf and Gimli are the coolest. But I also like Star Wars. Now, if Vader and Sauron teamed up, the world would be their burrito!

I couldn't follow Lord of the Rings at all. At all. It also didn't help that I never payed attention as it was a piece of garbage from beginning to end.

Star Wars had camp. Camp's sort of good. With the exception of the Episodes (particularly Episode III).

Not at all, as much as I love Star Wars, (and believe me I do) I really hated episode I compared to the rest. Leave me with the original trilogy any day!

Hey. Episode I was better than Episode III. Not that both should ever be used alongside the word "better". In fact, maybe I should just say Episode III sucked more than Episode I. Which sucked.

To me, the new episodes are alright, but they suck in comparison to the original Star Wars. These episodes don't even come close to the greatness of the original.

You, sir, are correct. Shoe

If we're talking about the original Star Wars trilogy vs LOTR trilogy, I definately say Star Wars. I liked LOTR fine but the third one was so...random and nonsensical. Oh noes, the evil spotlight of doom! I laughed out loud in the theatre.

But if I have to include the "first three" Episodes, LOTR might win because god, watching Darth Vader ruined forever makes me die on the inside. I'd rather laugh at Frodo getting beat up AGAIN than even think about medichlorians and Padme the emo loser.

Wow. I can't belive that that many people dislike the prequel triology. I made this so I could prove to my friend that Star Wars ruled over LoTR, but at least I'm not the only one who doesn't like Episodes 1-3. Oh yeah, sorry about putting it in the wrong place! My bad Nick.

It appears that the verdict has already decided Star Wars the better of the two. If not so, it is the more controversial of them.
As for my own humble opinion, I much prefer the story and design behind the universe in which these traits exist. A lot more effort was put into designing and bringing to life the countless races and planets that coexist in the entire universe than the mere handful in New Zealand. It was also an interesting case of a wayward religion over-throwing a political empire.
As far as the Episodes, it was very clever how they integrated everyone and all the stories to mesh together so perfectly to fit the real series. I personally feel that the Episodes are just an excuse for Mr. Lucas to milk every last dollar and display just how advanced and impressive his technological capabilities are but he still worked it into a decent story.

Lord of the Rings, however, is a sad attempt to make famous a piece of literature that does not need extensive and flashy movies to help it. I personally think the book is always better and hate to see movies rape and produce the love children of such works as Harry Potter, Eragon (also a bad book, but the movie is worse), and the cartoon Hobbit.
If one will notice, the majority of the movie is battles. Long and drawn out battles. At least Star Wars has the decency to supply us with a story and background. Lord of the Rings does so too, but only if you care enough to notice the past of dark, brooding, handsome Aragon and his lady elf that they slip in once in a while.

Star Wars is much better of the two.

Both are good... but in my eyes Star Wars is the more classic one.

LotR trilogy is still one incredible envisioning of the book... fantastic work!

I used to love Star Wars to death, but I've kind of fallen out of it. If anything I really love the 'original trilogy without digital enhancement.'

I can't really compare the two since they're so different, and wanted different things for their viewers. If I had to choose which trilogy I'd rewatch the most, or have rewatched, then it'd be OT Star Wars.

(Although my personal favorite trilogy is a different Lucas Arts film series, Indiana Jones.)

Star Wars. Easily. Love LotR, but the original trilogy is just pure win.

Also, why the Ep.3 hate? it was EASILY the best of the PT.

Star Wars, two words: MAce Windu, he can kick frodo ass any day of the week. Oh and that the fights were actually long and nice, and some of them were memorable.

Also star Wars has Chewie, Han, and more characters that you grow attached off.

oh and Mace Windu.

I would give Mace Windu more respect if they didn't make him a complete paper tiger and have him get a little bitch death.

Also, Frodo isn't a combat character...so...pretty much anyone could kick his ass.

Star Wars is good, but only for the original trilogy. I couldn't really stand the prequel trilogy.

Lord of the Rings...could have been a good series, but both the books and the movies just bored me to death. I don't know what it is about them.

Look, Mace Windu is dead. It's a stated canonical fact; no other Jedi survive the Episode 3 except for the ones you see. Windu was never in the original trilogy, nor anywhere inbetween. Besides, he was Force Lightninged, had his arm severed, and was tossed, incapacitated, out of a window. Dead as a doornail.

In my opinion 60% of all three LOTR movies was just walking. The rest was mix between great fight scenes and elves, lots of elves (kidding).
Don't mind me, just passing through.

Original Star Wars trilogy > Lord of the Rings, even though I did love the books. The movies, however...I'd probably never watch ever again because I'd get bored about five minutes into Fellowship.

While I do love the LotR series as works of literature, I really didn't like the movies. Yes, they kept to the books fairly well, and were much better than those god-awful animated ones, I just didn't like most of the actors.

Star Wars... while the newer ones have been very dissapointing (while some actors were good, Anikin was downright awful), I grew up with the first trilogy, and has always played some part in any type of creative work I've come up with.

While I can't argue that either is better (in terms of cinema), Star Wars is my choice.

Am I the only one here that enjoyed the LotR movies? I've read the books, and seen the movies. They did cut parts from the book out of the movies, but I still enjoyed it nonetheless.

As for which is better, I really can't decide. I LOVE BOTH!!

I liked Star Wars because it was something I grew up with and it stayed with me.

I also got my love for Star Wars from my mom since she collected almost all of the merchandise AND made the newspaper for that to.
