Probably one of my ALL-TIME favorite genres of movies and plays.
I probably really got into them when I went to New York City a few years ago and saw 'Mamma Mia!' and 'Hairspray' on Broadway.

Discuss your favorites. The songs; has it been remade?; etc...

Orange's favorites:
~Sweeney Todd
~The Phantom of the Opera
~Mamma Mia!
~Hairspray
~The Sound of Music
~Legally Blonde: The Musical (it was on TV once... ^^; )
~Chicago (but I haven't seen it in a while...)

And, of course, 'Gyakuten Saiban: The Musical'~

Personally, I hate musicals. It all started when my mother forced me to watch The Sound of Music with her, when I was a little kid (and coincidentally, my hatred of nuns also derives from this event). Why everyone has to burst into song when the smallest thing happens is completely beyond me. :knock-knock:

Although having said this, I do like Singin' in the Rain for some reason that I can't comprehend (maybe it's the choreography or Gene Kelly's performance or something?).

Legally Blonde was definitely awesome as a musical. I consider it better than the original movie.

Phantom of the Opera is my third fave film ever.

I also like Moulin Rouge and Annie (yes really).

Wicked times ten thousand. There aren't words for how good it is. "Defying Gravity" has over a hundred plays on my iPod--one of my favorite songs, highly recommended. RENT made me cry my eyes out, and really changed how I looked at a lot of things. I've only seen the movie, though, I don't know how the stage play compares. No day but today. :)

Spamalot was my favorite funny one. His name is Lancelot!

(You know what ticked me off? RENT came around with the OBC Mark and Roger and I couldn't afford the tickets adsf;lkjadf)

You mean the tour?

They always seem to do that when something closes. Tour after I mean.

...

Spamalot didn't tour.

Yeah, I meant the tour. It came around like two weeks ago and only stayed for a few days. :[ So did Fiddler on the Roof with the Tevye from the movie and I couldn't go for the same reason.

I saw Spamalot a month ago downtown with my friends, I'm positive it's touring, I think it says so on their website... They were selling little bunny-with-fangs puppets and I would've bought one except they were overpriced. And t-shirts saying "I'm Not Yet Dead". :D

Oh. I love Les Miserables.

I've also seen some parts of the off-Broadway version of The Wild Party. Haven't seen the earlier Broadway version.

Anything Takarazuka for me, especially Elizabeth and Me and My Girl (oh, the money I've dropped on this stuff)

West Side Story, 42nd Street, and Anyone Can Whistle also top my list. And Bye Bye Birdie since the songs and the story are totally corny

Urinetown.
Sweeney Todd.
Rent~

Unfortunately I've only seen one of those in production - Urinetown. In fact, I saw three different productions of it.

Sweeney Todd and Rent I only saw as movie adaptations, which (apparently) are vastly inferior to the plays...but still, I loved them.

It lost the appeal factor since it got pounded so much by the viral videos around.

Nonetheless great when I actually saw it.

Avenue Q, Hairspray, Wicked and Mamma Mia are my personal favourites. I have fond memories of my school choir performing "You Can't Stop The Beat" and I got to sing The Wizard and I as a solo. :3

The PHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANTOM of the operaaaaaa :D Probably my all time fave ^^
Followed closely by Cats which was the first musical I saw. I also adore Wicked, Sweeney Todd, Hairspray, Grease and Joseph and the amazing technicolour coat :)

I haven't seen Moulin Rouge by I must say that el tango de Roxanne is a brilliant song

I saw Wicked when I marched in Macy's this past year. It was absolutely freaking amazing. Although I prefer No One Mourns the Wicked, No Good Deed, and Wonderful to Defying Gravity.

West Side Story was okay, our band's show this year was based on it. I've only seen the movie version though.

BriarPatch was good, but I think that's more of a local thing.

Oh, and Les Mis. Our school put on a production of it and I thought it was amazing.

JEKYLL AND HYDE. Oh, Jekyll and Hyde. So much awesomeness, it's hard to contain. Particularly the concept album for it and the OBC. Later casts *cough*HASSELHOFF!*cough* weren't as good.

A nearby town's high school made a musical from scrach, based on a tabloid story. Batboy was pretty good actually. And it was a public high school.

I remember Batboy, he was from the Weekly World News, I think. I would love reading those stories, back when I worked at a supermarket. A musical version, I am quite intrigued.

I think I have a new favorite musical. Lil' Abner. So hilarious and almost all the character names were puns; it kinda remember me of PW in a way.

I love the music. Random violence ftw

lawls I wouldn't think Hasselhoff's performance was THAT bad.

Too bad it didn't last long.
