If it were possible to make a really great series like Gurren Lagann unpalatable, your post has come pretty close...
Right off the bat, yes TTGL is 'derivative' in that it follows the same set up as practically every giant robot show or shounen story since the history of manga. But TTGL is MEANT to be derivative, since it is Gainax's love song to their anime childhoods. The seasons have been filled lately with loli-licious moe crap like Kanon, shows that pander to the moe obsessed otaku that haunt akihabara these days; TTGL is not meant to appeal to them. It's for the audience who grew up obsessing over Mazinger, JEEG, Reideen, Go Lion, etc. ad nauseum.
Anyway, TTGL is a fun series. Gainax is obviously having a lot of fun paying homage to most Giant Robot and Space Drama archetypes and cliches. (Simon's appearance at the beginning of the first ep, for instance; of course if you don't get who that's supposed to be an homage to, you probably won't enjoy TTGL as much as you should.)
Anyway, the series has stirred up some debate recently, sine the 4th episode was guest directed, and the animation style changed. You can find news about that elsewhere; needless to say, I find it pretty ironic that Gainax's employees are complaining about Otaku in reference to TTGL.
Anyway, I suppose the best rec. one can give about TTGL is that if you really love old school giant robot shows, then you'll find a lot to love in TTGL; it's not meant to be anything more than that.
