Lost in Translation. 5/5

A simple movie at first glance, but has a lot of powerful themes under the surface. Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson have perfect chemistry together, but their relationship isn't as clear-cut as purely romantic. Sure, they do love each other; but at times it seems more like a father's love for his daughter. Other times, it feels like two best friends having a few drinks. Although I'm only 15, I really connected to this movie with its themes existentialism and loneliness. There are many times where I feel completely disillusioned with the world, but luckily I have someone in my life who I can really connect to. Lost in Translation is a movie simply about living in an often dull and unsatisfying world. All we can really do is move on and hope for the best.

Yep it's above Shaun of the Dead but below Hot Fuzz.

Also special bonus points for how well Nick Frost does in it.

The Chronicles of Riddick

Damn, it wouldn't win any awards, not exactly high art, but bloody good fun, and it involves death by teacup. And Vin Diesel's right about the series, it really is his D&D campaign. Looking forward to Riddick now.

And TopHatProfessor, good to see someone else enjoys Lost in Translation. Some people complain nothing happens in it, I say they're Phillistines. It's a bloody good film, and Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansen have brilliant on-screen chemistry.

I enjoyed it mostly because of how I could relate to it. Those people that "hate" the film are basically the same type people that Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson's characters are trying to get away from. They obviously didn't understand the whole point of the movie.

Hentai Kamen. Ridiculous concept, cheesy acting/special effects, and live action anime tropes. It was quite a bizarre movie, but damn was it highly entertaining.

Excellent film. The trailer makes it seems like a pretty generic action film, but it's definitely much more than that.

"Girl, Interrupted".

I'll give it 2,5 out of 5 stars. Sure, Jolie made a great role there but the ending is disappointing and besides, most of the history seems like a One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest replica.

Dirty Harry. 5/5

Clint Eastwood is the definition of badass. Dirty Harry is a perfectly paced, superbly acted neo-noir crime thriller film with stunning action scenes and effective tension. Can't wait to see what the rest of the films are like.

Very excellent movie even though I really wanted to punch some of the characters. I loved the story, the action, and the huge twist at the end.

It was pretty decent, points off for ripping off Slender Mythos and the second last plot twist at the end just felt...kinda...silly.

You know, this may sound weird and off-topic... but just the poster for Now You See Me looked liked a movie version of John Grisham's "The Firm"... although I doubt it's a movie adaption of that book.

Good drama. I'll give it 3/5 because it wasn't dynamic enough for me and I didn't like the scenario.

I disliked the film... although I read that the book the movie was based on was better, as the tape of the daughter and her boyfriend was a lot more important than just... being there, I guess.

I an't actually remember which was the last film I watched, so I'll do my usual no-rating-reviews on the last three:

Marvel's The Avengers/ Avengers Assemble (I prefer the latter as a title due to when the title card appears, when Maria asks Nick Fury what they should do, and the music sweeps up to AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!): If the parentheses didn't clue you in, this is basically one of my favourite films ever, because it's just sheer nerdgasmy fun from start to finish. And any film with Scarlett Johansen in a catsuit is a bonus.

Jackie Brown: Definitely up there with the rest of Tarantino's films, though not quite beating Pulp Fiction for favourite Tarantino film. I'd say my enjoyment of it's about the same as Inglorious Basterds, so still pretty damn high, just not Pulp Fiction high. Oh, and it's weird seeing Samuel L. Jackson with long hair.

Final Destination 3: What can I say, I love the Final Destination films for their sheer ridiculousness and their unashamed knowledge of how bizarre they are. Though this one' probably my least favourite, since some of the deaths are quite unpleasant (you know which two I specifically mean if you've seen it), whereas the series usually has a morbid humour to the deaths. Such as the bus appearing from nowhere in the first, or the exploding barbecue in 2.

Insidious: Sure, it's a good film, but I don't find it quite as scary as most people say it is. Some of the scares are actually quite humorous, and it is nice and cheesy in places. Still enjoyable, though, and pretty weird.

Not as good as the last Dirty Harry film, but Clint Eastwood doesn't lose his touch. The plot twists are a bit predictable though.

Kung Pow: Enter the Fist. Aw hell, I can't even attach a real rating for this film.

The first and foremost goal of movies is to entertain, and you can be damned that I was entertained when watching this movie. It's completely ridiculous, over the top, and poorly acting. But the thing is, the movie is completely self aware of itself and NEVER takes anything seriously. I laughed my ass off so many times, it was hard to breath by the end. The way it spoofs the awful English dubs of old Hong Kong martial arts films is spectacularly done, as is the effects used to super-impose the actors with the stock footage. If there's anything that I honestly didn't like, it would have to be the CG animal fights and a few jokes that simply fall flat. However, it's safe to say that Kung Pow is to martial arts movies as what Space Balls is to sci-fi.

Not everyone will appreciate its off the wall humor and randomness, but trying to actually review this film with a serious viewpoint would be downright stupid. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a rating of 11%. Obviously those people completely missed the entire point of Kung Pow. It's meant to entertain, nothing more and nothing less. Now stop reading this and go see it for yourself.

I saw the remaining Dirty Harry films. Here's my rating and short review for each.

The Enforcer. 3.5/5.

A decent action flick with a lot of wasted potential. The Enforcer probably has the best blend of action and humor out of all five films, but I felt that the "women can be cops, too" plotline was poorly done. By the end of the film, it goes nowhere and I think the final scene sort of throws all of that buildup away. That's what a lot of Clint Eastwood films feel like to me: a bag of mixed messages with a weak payoff. At least Eastwood and Tyne Daly's performances are solid throughout.

Sudden Impact. 4/5.

The first and only Dirty Harry film to actually be directed by Clint Eastwood himself. This film mostly strips away story in favor of heavy action sequences. In typical DH fashion, it's all spectacularly done. I enjoyed the whole "rape and revenge" theme, and Sondra Locke's acting as the "tortured, but angry victim" was well handled. If there are any problems, it's that this one is way too serious. Sure, you get the occasional dry humor; but this isn't The Godfather for crying out loud! The line "Go ahead, make my day," is one of the best in cinema though.

The Dead Pool. 3/5.

This is no doubt the weakest film in the series. While Eastwood still is good in the role of Harry, he's clearly showing his age. So much so that Eastwood has refused to make any more Dirty Harry films, viewing that him as the character would be nothing more than a "parody." I find it notable that this film has these now-big-name actors like Liam Neeson and Jim Carrey before they were famous, but none of them are in any memorable parts. It's really a waste of time, and I didn't care at all for the story or characters. The action isn't even on the same level as the other films. It isn't bad, it's just so bland. I have no idea why Siskel and Ebert rated this as high, if not higher than the masterpiece original.

So what are my thoughts overall on the series? I think that the original Dirty Harry is a masterful action film and one of the greatest of all time. The sequels are decent, but they aren't really necessary viewing. I think that the main theme throughout is how difficult being a police officer is. Harry is a man who hates the system, but he does it anyway to selflessly protect a public that would likely turn a blind eye in the reverse situation. The Bill of Rights, a suspect's rights, how a case should be handled are all the questions raised within all these films. If there are two things consistent throughout this series, it's Clint Eastwood's performance and the kick-ass soundtrack. Lalo Schfrin and Jerry Fielding.

My personal recommendation? Go see the original, and watch the others if you really want to see some more Dirty Harry action.

Garden of Words

Beautiful. Just about everything in this movie fits that description; the music, the visuals (the trees and river and such in the park border on photorealistic), the story... All the positives made the much too short 46-minute run time that much more painful, though. Time to go check out the rest of Shinkai's films, I guess.
