Has anyone seen Detective Conan? If not, you should see it. It's cool! If you like Phoenix Wright, you would really love it. |

Whee, no. 1 fan in the Netherlands here, or at least the best known fan :P I'm a fan of Golden Age detectives in general, so I like most detective manga, but Conan is truly my favorite manga. Especially when most of the important characters have been introduced (around 20~25) it really outdones itself with storytelling and puzzles. I happened to have made pictures of my Conan collection last Saturday for another forum, so I'll just repost them ^_~ The German releases of Detective Conan. I'm Dutch, but I can read German well, so this is a great release to me. Bah, Case Closed fiasco. Other Detective Conan and Aoyama Gosho stuff. In the upper middle, a 2 page article about Conan by... me! Released last year in the best, only Dutch manga/anime magazine AniWay. |

Yes, it's Case Closed over here as well, due to some legal issue with Conan the Barbarian.

They never did finish up the show over here though! I'll have to find the manga and start reading it if I ever want to see the whole story! Rachel/Ran's dad cracked me up! Probably one of my favorite characters! |

@Dullahan1: The manga is still going strong: it's up to 53 or 54 books now in the series so it's no wonder they didn't finish up the show here. There's still more coming! :) Back to topic.... My husband and I are big fans of this series: both the manga and the anime series! :) I really like Rachel (I vastly prefer the English names to the Japanese ones) and Jimmy Kudo the best. :) I wish they'd get rid of the Junior Detectives--I can't stand those kids. |

The biggest problem I have with the English names is how they didn't even tried to get puns over. All the major characters in Conan are named in one way or another to detectives and writers. For detective fans, this is really, really fun. In the US version they didn't even came up with names inspired by detectives, even though there's plenty of material. I only know of Harley Hartwell / Hattori Heiji that could be inspired by Christie's Harley Quin and Parker Pyne (detective of the "heart"). In contrast, I heard the German dubbed version of the anime tried to name every character, major or minor, to a writer or detective. |

I adore the series. I've got volumes 1-14 since they're the only ones out in the UK at the moment, but I buy the new ones as soon as they're released. I just adore the series... some of them are stupidly difficult, some of them I spend ages trying to work out and then it all turns out to be a pun on a kanji, but it's so great if you can figure out who did it and how before Conan. I really love it. <3 I love Ran/Rachel too. She's one of few females in a male-centered anime that doesn't suck completely. I love the art style, too; it's really distinctive and put me off a little at first, but it's really great how there can be so many characters and they all look so different you don't get muddled up - which normally happens to me all the time. I prefer the manga to the anime. If I have the manga, I can spend as long as I want trying to figure something out, and it's more fun that way :D |

I thought the manga was fun for 10 volumes or so. After then, it just keeps repeating ("oh noes, a murder in a sealed-off room! And there's tapes and wires everywhere!") and the main story stands still. And the whole "young boy detective squad" filler crap is totally awful. Same goes for the movies, they started out bad and get worse with every new one (there are like what, eleven by now?) Quote: In contrast, I heard the German dubbed version of the anime tried to name every character, major or minor, to a writer or detective. The german mangas and dubbing both leave all names unchanged. The dubbing is totally hilarious as the german voice actors just read the japanese names with german pronounciation. I still think it's worlds better than the "LOL ITS IN AMERICA NOW!!" treatment it got for the english version, though. |

I don't have any problem with the 'repeating murders', as I am mainly a Golden Age detective fan. The more (good) cases, the better IMHO ^_~; Then again, I'm slowly accumulating as much detective fiction as Shinichi has, so I might not be very objective. Quote: Same goes for the movies, they started out bad and get worse with every new one (there are like what, eleven by now?) 11 movies at the moment. I actually think they got better a lot the last few years. Since the seventh movie the stories are a lot better (the ninth movie is really good). Quote: The german mangas and dubbing both leave all names unchanged I knew of the manga (as I own every issue of Conan in German :P), but I wasn't sure about the anime. |

The appeal of Detective Conan does not lie in the fast-paced plot or realism; quite obviously no (however old Conan is) kid is going to be witness to anywhere near as many as he is (vists library - someone gets murdered. Goes skiing - someone gets murdered. Goes to a restaunt - someone gets murdered). But it wouldn't be much of a mystery otherwise, would it? It's not a good drama; it was never intended to be. The "plot" only really acts as a medium for the different cases... and the fact that the lead characters are awesome is just an added bonus. At least, that's what I think. |

Ryu-kun wrote: The dubbing is totally hilarious as the german voice actors just read the japanese names with german pronounciation. Ahahaha! GOOD TIMES! When I had Rtl2, that is. It was hilarious how they pronounced the names with such pauses. Tah-Kah-Haah-shiih. Anyways, I like the series from what I've checked, both as Manga and Anime. The manga, in fact, comes out translated in Finnish, which might be considered a surprise since the series is not that popular in the West (At least, that's what I think) However, I haven't bought any volumes lately, since I have that feeling that the series is a bit too repetitive for my taste. But it's fun to figure out who the murderer is in every case. I tend to have the luck to always guess right, weird, yes ![]() Kogoro <3 |

Oh wow, Detective Conan. I used to wake up at like, 4 in the morning and watch it on Adult Swim with my little sister. X3 A pity that they cancelled it. Woah. 50+ manga volumes. I'm only up to the 10th one...or so. XD I really need to catch up on that and buy more of the manga; although, as many people have stated, I have to agree that the series is pretty repetitive. It's still pretty good overall. 8D |

I'm pretty much in agreement with Ryu-kun here. The appeal lasts a bit longer on my part though, it was after the 20th volume that I began to lose interest with the series. I personally don't think anyone approached the series expecting realism. I mean, really, it's a show about some highschool dude who got shrunk into a shrimp. And a murder on a roller coaster on the first volume? I was in it for the ridiculous cases just like everyone else probably. It was fun for a while, then the number of dead bodies pile up, and after 10 volumes or so, the bodycount pretty much surpasses Rambo's confirmed kills. Each case is structured exactly the same in the Holmesian tradition. It's essentially reading the same material over and over. Look, even Conan Doyle himself got tired of Holmes after some books and tried to kill the character. Another thing is, the two main detectives are pretty much Holmes clones themselves. You have the classic arrogant pricks with sticks up their asses who can apparently deduce that the black marks on the suspect's left hand somehow indicates that the suspect is a pedophilic rapist who listens to the Village people's YMCA song day after day(with fantabulous reasoning that boggles the mind.) You can only repeat the same premise so many times before it spells out "redundant." The "kid detective" gimmick spices things up a bit, but the premise wears thin after a while. Despite all that I've said, I still kind of follow the books. I really like some of the filler chapters involving inspector Takagi and Satou. Heck I even liked the occasional Aibara x Conan bit. I think I'm going to burn in hell for this :( |

If you want to know if I like Detective Conan, just take a look at my sign ^^. Anyway, I really like the manga series, which I read in French (the translation is very good. The only thing is that its TOO Japanese (most of the names are the Japanese names, and some cases are very hard to understand because they are based on Japanese puns). Well, I still like it, even thought I already read about 20 of them. Oh, and Conan is awesome. We need a Conan smile here ^^. |

It's pretty unheardof where I come from since the canadian YTV channel aired about 30 episodes at 1 in the morning or so before just taking it off-air. I was thoroughly addicted though and thanks to Knightus I read about 30-something (?) volumes online. I wonder if Conan will ever turn back into Shinichi again. |

Detective Conan is one of my favorite animes, right behind Haruhi, I've seen up to episode 138 I believe, however I skipped over a few since I had a hard time finding the sub versions after 109. My favorite character is Ai Haibara thus far, she reminds me of an anti-Conan yet she isn't if that makes sense, |

I likes thiz to!!!11 XD Conan definitely doesn't get enough credit over here. Yeah, people can talk about it being repetitive and stuff (which it it! I'm not disputing that!) but it's got some great mind benders to figure out in there. And when you get over the 'I'm a little boy, who's not really a little boy, secretly solving murders' you don't get much story. The story you do get, however, is pretty cool. I love the whole Black Organization junk. I also like that in a male driven manga, there are still strong female characters, good and evil (Ran/Rachel, Jodie-sensei, Vermouth). It altogether is a great series and it should be more popular outside Japan. ... Not to mention, this series has turned me into a total Kaito Kid fangirl. ... XD Mask*Demask has got a rival!!!
