There isn't a topic about this one, I suppose.. so, yeah I'll start one for the heck of it :redd:

Okay, so what's Sword Art Online, long for SAO?

It is normally a light novel, which was published as an anime later on. And not just a normal anime, it's like there is some hype around it. Everyone seems to talk about it. There's people who like it but there's also people who strongly dislike it.

Now for the plot:

Sword Art Online (ソードアート・オンライン, Sōdoāto Onrain) is a light novel series written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by abec. The series has currently 11 volumes. It was written as a Web novel with the penname "Kunori Fumio" since 2002, and was published in 2009 at the same time as Accel World, in the label Dengeki Bunko.

The protagonist in the series is the young boy Kirigaya 'Kirito' Kazuto who is a little game nerd and fights with his character in the online world Sword Art Online. One day, the founder of the game hides the log out button and tells the many players in the game that they should clear all floors and then they have officially won the game, but it turns out as a dramatic scenario.

A lot of players commited suicide in the world and (yeah I forgot to mention this earlier) if they die in the game they also die in the real world. But Kirito got a really high level during those two years (!) in SAO and he meets a lot of people, also he meets the stubborn, but rather cute girl Yuuki Asuna, who is the leader of a clan, the 'Knights Of Blood'. A lot of things happen and after two years, they finally - or rather Kirito - can win this game in order to return back to the real life world.

Back in the real life world, Kirito often visits Asuna and finds out that Asuna is orginally trapped in another world, ALFheim Online. He thinks about giving the online world another chance just to save Asuna. And he really fights that hard just to bring the one he loves back into the real world.

Sidenotes:

- Kirito and Asuna were married in SAO and they are a couple in real life.
- Kirito has a sister who isn't even his sister but his cousin.

If you haven't watch this anime yet, just feel free to do so! I've watched it two times and even then, it never gets boring!

Also if you have watched it yet, I want to know what your thoughts on SAO are! Did you like/dislike it?

The beginning was quite fun, just with all the ups and downs

I'll be that guy who strongly dislikes it. I'll be civil.

It's my most disliked anime this past season unfortunately. The first arc is a whole lot better than ALO's shitty writing, but once Asuna and Kirito move in together I kinda stopped caring.

Kirito is way too overpowered... in both arcs. Honestly, there's no little challenge for him to beat SAO since losing means death, and in ALO it just meant Asuna gets raped. Yeah sure he gets down to little no health when fighting Gleameyes, but he's got the thickest plot armor I've ever seen so it really takes away from the whole suspenseful atmosphere of the death game.
Also, Kirito's character never changes throughout the series. Oh wait, the whole Rudolph episode made him depressed and that isolated him even more so than he was at the beginning of the game, but then Asuna bops some sense into to become less depressed. To me, he's got the personality of a wooden plank. He goes through absolutely no character progression whatsoever besides the depression stage. He's aloof a good majority of the time, and easily beats whatever's in his way by yelling and going berserk.

This show's got a strong following behind it, and I'm really wondering it's getting so much praise and attention as Full Metal Alchemist, Death Note, Code Geass.

Honestly to me, it's just another generic romance/harem, shounen anime with a big twist in the first arc, but then it becomes a pointless task to watch the last arc cause you just know Kirito's going to beat the bad guy and save his girlfriend. I'm well aware that of my tastes in anime, and I can pretty much watch anything you throw at me. Whether it be a generic harem like Infinite Stratos, an epic mech, drama like Code Geass, or even moe-blob shows like Tamako Market and K-On, I can sit through a lot.

The main reason why I'm so annoyed with SAO is because I see so many "elitist anime viewers" bashing the harems and moe-blobs and accusing them of destroying anime as we know it, that I wonder why SAO is so popular with these people and the others aren't.
Here you've got a boring protagonist, the great and underutilized setting of Aincrad, members of Kirito's harem poppin up every other episode, and predictable fights. It just seems so... generic to me I just don't get it.

Spoiler: What could HAVE been
Rather than beating Heathcliff straight away, they should've dragged the series through more floors. And yes. I did read the SAO light novel chapters.
They could've killed off more important characters than just Kirito's old guild to better utilize the death game. Who cares about the random other players that shattered? They definitely could've developed Kirito's character a whole lot more. I'm not satisfied with wooden characters.

Spoiler: I don't hate Sword Art Online
I just hate the stupid praise it's getting for being something super awesome when it's got a lot of problems.
Hell I even pre-ordered these guys,
Image
I caved and I decided to order Kirito too, since I couldn't bear to see Asuna by herself.

I like Sword Art Online but I am more leaning toward it being amazingly bad than amazingly good.

With every episode made me wish more and more for Asuna's head to be on a spike, and I disliked how Kirito and Asuna's half baked romance is constantly waved in the face. And I actually liked Kirito, but the second season was a bloody trainwreck that made me wish he would die, and looking back Kirito being a god mod and being a walking sex machine that attracts women randomly is reeeeaaaaallllllyyyyy annoying. Seriously, I wish Kirito would be relatable and more flawed, except being the type of guy everyone wishes to be. He could probably be the type of guy who doesn't get his love interest in the end.

And, I wish Sachi didn't die, I wish Asuna would die and Sachi could take her place. Shy anime girls get no love (except Hinata Hyuuga) all the love goes to the female anime characters with the best bodies.

Ok, sorry for being so brutally harsh, just my two cents. (There's a bunch of other complaints I have but, I don't want to talk about them all right now.)

Edit: Am I the only one who thinks this anime was somewhat predictable?

You certainly came off more harsh than I did, but you pretty much voiced what I said. Well I actually like Asuna, but their relationship was really obnoxious with it being waved in my face every episode. Honestly, Asuna is too good for him, and I never cared for Sachi her uselessness was what got her killed in the first place. The main attraction to Asuna was her ability to hold her own ground while fighting. She was headstrong, and she was very rarely put into a corner. Your hostility towards her is kind of disturbing, so to balance it out I'd rather have Kirito's head on a pike. He's such an unlikable boring ass character with nothing going for him whatsoever except a ridiculous harem that includes his cousin.

It's got so many problems it's not worthy of the praise it's getting.

Like I said, I can pretty much watch any anime you throw at me and I find enjoyable. But when I watch an anime that's got a decent amount of problems and everybody overhypes it as the next coming of Jesus, then I start to become irritated.

And yes. I did say the anime is very predictable.

SAO is a death game, but the main characters never die.
Evil bad guy at the end of each arc is beaten and Kirito never loses once because he wins when he gets mad.
Girls swoon left and right cause he looks at them.

I should start a some kind of anime thread one day :jake:

Yes I know my hostility for Asuna is disturbing. (I kind of scare myself because of it) :youngmia: But I have my reasons. When I was first introduced to her she striked me as generic, sure her introduction was mysterious, but I didn't care, I pretty much knew from the get-go that she would be a generic female lead. (The intro of the anime makes it obvious. :whip: ) She went from being like Saeko from Highschool of the Dead, to being Rei from Highschool of the Dead. (Asuna and Rei even look similar) She doesn't change much, and her being stuck in a cage for a majority of season 2 isn't what I would call good character development, and whatever character development she has mostly revolves around her relationship with Kirito.

Besides, I've seen more stronger female characters than Asuna, I'd rather cheer on the entire female cast of Highschool of the Dead rather than her.

And I knew Asuna wasn't really gonna get raped. (Season 2 was even more predictable than the first.) It is in fact a shounen anime and even though shounen anime do have mature themes, they must set limits. But maybe SAO should have been an adult anime because it did have adult themes.

Oh and one of my biggest complaints about season 2 is, Kirito's relationship with Leafa is bloody pointless. :edgeworth:

I dropped SAO when we got to the ALO arc. I hated reading it, and I didn't want to go through the same shit again by watching that train wreck. Leafa is just an extension of Suguha's haremic inclusion. Nothing more than a pointless "love interest" that shouldn't exist in the first place.

I haven't seen Highschool of the Dead yet, but here are some badass/strong female characters I've seen in anime.
Spoiler:
Yoko from Gurren Lagann is pretty badass, and a looker to boot.

Kallen from Code Geass

Makise Kurisu from Steins;Gate

Weird how I pick 3 redheads in a row. I know!

You forgot Maka and Tsubaki from Soul Eater, Yuri from Angel Beats, And all the magical girls from Puella Magi Madoka Magica. :will:

And about the hype the show gets, I will admit that it is annoying, but we can't stop it. However, I do believe SAO does deserve SOME of the praise it has recieved. Let's face it, When it comes to SAO, there's a lot of stupid to go around, but I didn't get bored with this anime. Except for some parts of the second season that made me hesistant to finish. The fight scenes were nice, and the soundtrack was great.

What annoyed me more was the praise Kirito and Asuna's relationship got, just because their relationship went farther than most canon relationships go.

But hey! Romance sells! All you need is romance no matter how half baked it is then you get profit. Makes me miss when cartoons and anime focused more on overall character development and the romance didn't seem forced and wasn't waved in the face. (Ex: Teen Titans, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Danny Phantom, Fruits Basket, Pokemon, Digimon, Cardcaptor Sakura, Fullmetal Alchemist, etc.)

I wouldn't say that's quite far off the mark. That's a pretty good comparison actually. Well at least SAO is far more tolerable than Twilight.

Agreed. SAO also drove me crazy but it wasn't as bad as when I watched The Secret Life of the American Teenager and I kepted on groaning and facepalming every minute. And in some ways I think SAO was better than Legend of Korra.

Ok, I'll admit, SAO wasn't the best anime I have watched but it wasn't the worst either.

Maybe you should watch Puella Magi Madoka Magica. It is highly praised like SAO but in my opinion, Madoka Magica deserves the praise for redifining the magical girl genre. And the anime does a great job of fitting a great story and great character development in 13 episodes.

I HAVE seen Madoka Magica, and it is indeed worthy of being praised as the third coming of Jesus. I can't wait to watch the movies. I own two Homura figures, and I'll be getting a Godoka one next month. Oh yes. I know all about Madoka Magica.

SAO's opening was nice...But it made it obvious that Kirito and Asuna were going to be lovers, thus adding ZERO surprises to their relationship. -_-

I don't like how most anime openings ruin some plot in the sequences, but I mainly liked actual song and not what goes on behind it.

I would still recommend people to watch it though. >D I even want my step grandfather to watch it since he loves online gaming.

I'm reading Gun Gale Online, and I can say the concept of it sounds so we'll see where it goes from there. Kirito will most likely still be overpowered as fuck and stomp everything in sight since he transferred character data again just like he did from SAO to ALO. Oh! In a game where EVERYONE uses guns as their main weapon, he goes out and buys a lightsaber. Yup....Season 3 is looking to be another interesting story for SAO. :sawit:

Oh boy, guns! Kind of reminds me of this anime crossover I want to make, a SAO and Angel Beats crossover that will make Kirito less of a wish fulfilment character. Kirito joins the battlefront, he falls for Kanade but Kanade doesn't return the feelings. Otonashi "wins" Kanade and to top it of, Kanade disappears. Yuri has somewhat of an infactuation for Kirito but she shrugs it off since she's the powerful independent anime character...and I don't know where else to go with this.

But yeah, it's obviously going to be AU. I probably would change the computer controlled concept of the afterlife into another virtual reality game, even though it would seem like a parody of a school shooting. My main goal is to make a nice action/romance story that doesn't make me want to flip tables. And make Kirito more relatable by making him a character that doesn't get the girl he wanted. (not much romance anime do this.) But I also want Yuri to stay fairly in character since I don't want her to be a character who's character development revolves around romance.

Now if only I had Sony Vegas and all episodes of Angel Beats and SAO to execute my idea, I don't think I can do this with just words.

That's because the first two episodes were great, at least to me. Even though I've seen the whole story of people playing a harmless looking virtual reality game and then getting trapped and have to defeat the game in order to be free.

Because of the first two episodes, my expectations for the show were high. :sad-maya:

I watched the first two episodes today, seems ok.

That's because the first two episodes were great, at least to me. Even though I've seen the whole story of people playing a harmless looking virtual reality game and then getting trapped and have to defeat the game in order to be free.

Because of the first two episodes, my expectations for the show were high. :sad-maya:

So you saying I should stop watching now to savour the experience since it's all downhill from here?

Don't treat watching anime like a chore...Just try to have whatever fun you can with this series even though the series will take a total nose dive in terms of potential.

I had no problems finishing the first arc which is episodes 1-12, maybe 13. After that, drop it because the second arc is pure bull. ALO's writing is horrible: Forced drama, predictable plot, and sticking Asuna in cage the whole time.

I wish Kirito was gay. >D I know it won't help the plot at all but I wish he was gay. SAO needs more shounen-ai and shouojo-ai.

Being a guy, I'm not into Boy-love. I'd rather see some Yuri myself.

Sorry, ^^; one of the reasons I liked Kirito in the first place was because I thought he was beautiful. I just adore boys with flowing black hair...But then I freaked out when I found out he was 16, I'm usually attracted to older guys. Because of this I feel like a pedo. ^^;

I wish I could make an amv with Kirito romancing up another guy, like Ikuto from Shugo Chara. (I dropped this series btw) And as for Asuna...eh, it would be hard to make her a lesbian...Maybe Sugu and Liz could...ugh, it's hard to imaging them together due to their lack of character development. v_v; Which blows since I wanted to care for Sugu, she was the probably the only character who could break up this annoying love feast between Kirito and Asuna...But after her performance in season 2...ugh!

(Well ok, I sort of care for her, but that's only because I was in her situation before. But I actually gave a tearful love confession to someone who wasn'r related to me by blood.)

I don't see anything wrong with him being 16 since a good majority of characters in anime are underage. Hell even Yoko from Gurren Lagann is 14-16 and I still find her hot (the red head in my current sig). I'd also like to see Sugu get more love than how she was treated. Girls with big boobs shouldn't be treated like shit. It's just a crime against nature. Now flat-chests... that's a whole different story.

One of Sugu's classmates had a crush on Sugu. :/
But Sugu rejected. ^^;

Yeah I remember that. Cause he's not fucking alpha enough! Anime needs more Alpha characters. Kirito is borderline Alpha and Beta. Which is probably why I don't like him enough.

I started a topic, left the forum for a short while and returned just to see 38 (including mine) posts and over 800 views.

Now I feel bad for abadoning it.. :yogi:

Oh I remember this thread. Always thought the reason why you left was cause this thread was mostly full of posts bashing the series :P
