Well, I can't say I have a favorite band/artist per se because I don't fully enjoy every song that said band produces. However, I commend them for composing timeless pieces. List includes:

The Rolling Stones
The Who
Queen
AC/DC
Deep Purple
Linkin Park
Weird Al Yankovic
Hoobastank
Rammstein
Eisbrecher

I love other artists' works as well, but long story short: if I iPod at least 3 or more songs, or listen to 1 or more of their albums, the band is great in my eyes.

Off the top of my head...

Weird Al Yankovic
David Bowie (both #1)
Queen (probably #2)
Boston(also a contender for the #2 spot, although I only know/like one of their albums)
Nirvana (same as above)
Panic! At the Disco
Bad Luck
Nittle Grasper ^_^

And some more I forgot, I'm sure.

Also Kansas, although I wouldn't call them a favorite since I only know a few songs, but Carry On Wayward Son is my all-time favorite song EVER, so they're in too. ^_^

Mostly black metal, a couple of technical death metal bands, a few post-rock bands, and a couple of contemporary rock bands.

Looking over the list, I missed a few prog rock bands, a couple of rap groups, a couple of Classical artists and a few jazz artists.

*sigh*

This is what happens when I rush lists. :S

I'm pretty mixed lol.

Well bearing in mind I am an Old Git (TM) and it takes a good few years before a band moves off my "they're pretty good" list on to my "I can't get by more than a few days without listening to them" list here's a few of the bands that I keep CDs on hand at all times for (and have jamming up my iPod songlists):

The Smiths
Julian Cope (and the Tearsrop Explodes by extension)
The Rollins Band (and Rollins era Black Flag by extension)
Dead Kennedys (and some later Jello Biafra side projects)
XTC
The Doors
The Monochrome Set (and some post-band side projects)
The Beautiful South
The Shamen
Michelle Shocked
Momus
The Prodigy
Billy Bragg
Fat Boy Slim
Public Enemy
Fun-Da-Mental
Silver Bullet
Pop Will Eat Itself
Orange Juice (and solo Edwyn Collins)
The Lightning Seeds (and other side projects)
Jimmy Somerville (including Communards and Bronski Beat)
The Wedding Present
The Television Personalities
Howlin' Wolf
Lee "Scratch" Perry
Billie Holliday
The Pogues
Adam Ant (in band and solo)
Mozart
Radiohead
The Cure
Sisters of Mercy (all incarnations)
Sigur Ros
Scissor Sisters
Arctic Monkeys

Probably loads more but that'll do, you get the point. OLD GIT!

Lessee;
Keane, Michael Jackson (brilliant artist, fuck the rest of it), Scissor Sisters (Mary makes me cry >>), Antic Cafe, Abingdon Boys School, Franz Ferdinand, The Fratellis, HIM, Muse... that's about it.

I listen to way more than that but these are the people/bands I will obsessively listen to/get music of.

I love jazz music but I just don't know where to start looking. It's not exactly the most glamorous and publicized thing these days, unlike back in 20s.

Meh, I'm open to any kind of jazz as long as it involves the usage of a saxophone. Seriously, you can't deny that the sax is a god-awesome instrument. But, I'm open to any kind of jazz as I'm not entirely familiar with just how many styles there are.

Hiroshima is a really Jazzy band, it lacks saxophones but they're pretty good cause they use alot of instruments! And Keiko Matsui composes, plays piano, keyboard and she's an arranger. She's really good too... that's all I can think of....

Queen, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, U2, Radiohead, Dire Straits, Héroes del silencio, Nirvana, The Beatles, Jeff Buckley and Janis Joplin (these last are solo artists but... meh). I also listen to other bands like Dream Theater, King Crimson, Deep Purple or Metallica, but I haven't listened to of their albums, only two or three.

There are only a very few bands where I like large collections of the music. While there are quite a few one-hit-wonders (I even like Toxic from Britney Spears, WTF) there are only really 3 bands where I can definetively say that 'this band is good', instead of 'this song is good'. Those are:

-Dragonforce (besides the technically nice guitar playing, the combination of harmony and disharmony works very well. I'm a fan of harmonic music, but they usually get too boring. That is hard to say about Dragonforce, so it works out like a charm.)

- Queen (While a selected few songs are quite better than the average Queen music, I generally love the entire collection. It's a mix of good rock, to some smooth and calm songs that work excelently. Combined with Murcery that really nows how to sing, it works out very well.)

- E-type (What, now? Old band. Makes some very nice songs. Like Dragonforce, it mixes harmony with disharmony, except the disharmonic parts here isn't heavy guitar banging but kind of techno-ish rap. It works out very well.)

There are also a few other bands that made more than a one-hit wonder, which I like. but besides Aqua, their names escape me.

Oh, and also. I don't really listen to many bands overall. My favorite composers are those from the Capcom sound department. 80-85% of my music collection is game music.

Led Zeppelin
The Bravery
Beck
Soundgarden
The Clash
Foo Fighters
Incubus
White Stripes
Stephen Lynch
RHCP

I've got a lot of stuff I listen to, so I'm not gonna waste time listing every band that I like. But I'm mostly an alternative/classic rock guy, as said by my favorites. :hobohodo:
