Miyazaki's new film that's come state side. I just got back from seeing it myself and I must say that movie was amazing. I was a bit worried that he might have started losing his touch a little after Ponyo, but this movie blew me away, it was fantastic. Anyone else on here planning on seeing it or have seen it yet?

Hey now I loved Ponyo. Sure it was for kids but hey so's the lion king. Plus it had LIAM NEESON playing an amazing water wizard man.

Though I really want to see Arrietty. I've always like the story of the borrowers from the 1997 film and that BBC indie film so hoping to see this sometime.

Shame I'm probably too late to catch it in the cinema.

Oh, I loved Ponyo, don't get me wrong. I just felt after coming off of Howl's Moving Castle, it didn't quite live up to what I was hoping. Aside from that though, it was a fantastic movie. As always, the art was gorgeous, especially the opening cinematic. That was some of the most brilliant animation I've ever seen.

@Wooster: Yeah, just came out yesterday! Get with the times!

Wherever. It depends on your taste, really.

Do you like fantasy? Do you like stories with a moral (I always seem to think that the SG films have morals)?

They're all amazing, but most would say start with Spirited Away, because that's the one that has gotten the most praise (in the form of an oscar, no less). But just start with any, and see what you think. They're all very diverse and not one film is alike.

Love triangles, friendship, action, sadness, badass cats, monsters, memories, witches, following your ambition. They have it all :hobolaugh:

The best way I hear it put, is that Studio Ghibli is the Japanese equivilant of Pixar. High quality movies, both in terms of visuals and characterization. Pixar just focuses on 3D, while Ghibli 2D. Now if only Disney took a hint from these two. Ironically, I think Disney owns both, or at least, Disney owns the rights in the West.

I saw Arietty long before it was even announced here I believe. It was definitely a good movie, and I really hated Ponyo. Normally I'm fine with Ghibli's choice in dubs, but Ponyo and the boy were too obnoxious for me.

@Professor Wright, My favorites were Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Monnoke, Howl's Moving Castle, and of course Spirited Away. Of course these are just a small fraction of Studio Ghibli's repetoir.

I'd start with Princess Mononoke.

Though I recommend if you watch Spirited Away you watch it seriously without friends. Watched it at a party for the first time. I ruined it for a friend of mine who is deeply in love with that film with comments about how I love the manliness of the Dads chin and how the mother clearly has junk in the trunk.

For me, it'd be Castle in the Sky, that Lupin the 3rd movie (even if it doesn't technically count as a Ghibli similar people were involved), and Princess Mononoke.

Gotta admit, I wasn't too impressed by Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle. Howl's Moving Castle seemed to have all the conflict be background items. That... really confused me. As for Spirited Away, I don't really know, but it never fully sat with me. Oddly enough I enjoyed Ponyo more then those two movies.

Has anyone seen the Studio Ghibli movie "Ocean Waves"? I saw that a while back and found it really great.

I was first introduced to Miyazaki in my Asian Lit class with Princess Mononoke. Really helped that my professor was an anime nerd and wanted us to watch it over our Japanese literature part of class. As for my favorite Ghibli films, it's really hard to decide. I loved most of the ones Miyazaki has done, so it's tough. I will say though that Arriety definitely ranks high up there for me now, probably because it reminded me of My Neighbor Totoro at different aspects of the movie. Really, just replace Totoro with little people. Also, am I the only one wanting a sequel to Porco Rosso? It's been hinted at so much and it's something I'd like to see. I'm curious how Miyazaki would pull off a sequel to his own works.

Also, Miyazaki invented Dr. Eggman.

According to Wikipedia, I've yet to see any Ghibli film between Castle in the Sky and Princess Mononoke, which are, oddly enough some of my favorite movies. The ones that have caught my eye are Grave of the Fireflies, My Neighbor Totoro. I'd like to see them sometime.

I'd also highly recommend Kiki's Delivery Service and Porco Rosso as well if you get the chance. The former didn't quite appeal to me at first, but it was much better than I had initially believed.

Which version are you referring to? I picked up a copy of the 2000 dub late last year and cringed terribly in the contrast to the Streamline dub from the early 90's, even if it was supposedly more faithful to the original Japanese dialogue. ^^'

Did any Ghibli fan in NA get the chance to watch Goro Miyazaki's From up on a Poppy Hill when it was screened at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival last year? :)

That one. It's the only exposure to Lupin I have, and I am very satisfied with it.

Streamline didn't do the first dub of Laputa; it was done by a company very quickly and cheaply.

But I'm sure he's referring to either the Japanese version or the 2003 Disney dub, since those are the two commercially available right now. Personally, I think the Disney dub of Castle in the Sky is fantastic and in many ways adds to the film, especially in the performances of its cast and beautiful extended music. Of course it has its faults, however, Mark Hamill, Cloris Leachman, the pirates, and the new score all made it worthwhile.

By contrast, I found the Streamline/JAL dub awful and lifeless; nobody there sounded like they were turning in a good performance, unlike the folks in Disney's dub. Needless to say, it only convinced me that the Disney dub was the better of the two.

Now I am not usually against older '90s/80s dubs. The older dubs for Totoro and Kiki were solid, and compared favorably to their Disney counterparts, but Laputa? No way. Disney's dub is the better version for me.

JTurner: Oh, I completely agree with you, no questions about it. The Disney dub of Laputa was fantastic, but I was referring to Wooster's comment about Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro, hence why I bolded that part and not Castle in the Sky... ^^'

Cagliostro was dubbed twice, once by Streamline and then a second time by Manga Entertainment... they're significantly different in terms of dialogue and character development, strangely enough. You wouldn't think so with such minor modifications, but it's quite a different film in relation to characters.

Wooster: If you're referring to the box art, that's for the Streamline dub, the best one in my opinion. Any release with this art refers to the newer dubbing. =)

I've only viewed Lupin on Netflix, and it used the box art that's currently on Wikipedia. I personally aren't too worried that I may have gotten the lesser dub. It was excellent, and that's all that matters to me =)

Just watched The Castle of Cagliostro on Netflix.
Holy s**t that was good. :redd: I can't describe what I loved about it, but I recommend it.
Now, I have to rent all of Miyazaki's other movies.

Oh, I didn't realize that you meant "Cagliostro". My apologies. ^_^

But yeah, "Laputa" is one of my favorite films, and I just adore the dub. I find it baffling that anyone can say it's unlistenable because it's anything but. It's not without its faults, but they're minor IMO and I can't get enough of it.

"Cagliostro" I only saw the second Manga dub, and to be honest, I really liked it a lot; it was amusing to hear Solid Snake as Lupin. But I do think they laid the profanity on a little too thick; I could have done without it. I DID hear clips of the Streamline dub, but I'm kinda torn over which version I like better; they both have their pros and cons.

Just saw Arriety today. Great movie. It's like a Pixar movie, a great, simple plot. The animation was buetiful, particularly the colors. The dub was great too. I recommend it! :edgy:

I've been on a spree of Gibli movies lately, so far I've watched Kiki's Delivery Service and My Neighbor Totoro. Both are amazing movies! I can't say which is better.

Princess Monoke is still my favorite, but this movie makes me wish borrowers were real.

Definately worth the watch because Studio Ghibli films are amazing. But if you're expecting action and suspense, you're not going to get much, like in Kiki's Delivery Service.

And I now ship Sho/Arrietty. (Since Sho was obviously infactuated with her. :pearl: )

i've so far only seen 5 ghibli movies: kiki's delivery service, my neighbor totoro, spirited away, howl's moving castle, and arriety.

i liked arriety, but not as much as all the others i'd have to say.

i thought calling them borrowers was kinda funny, i mean do they really give back the stuff they take? :uramidn:

my friend keeps telling me to watch whisper of the heart, but i haven't gotten around to doing that yet.

I watched Arrietty around a month and a half ago and I thought it was beautiful - just like every other Studio Ghibli movie. Although, I found the music less memorable than usual.

I don't have a favourite Ghibli movie. I thought about it for awhile, but they are all just too good. Nausicaa stood out for me though. It's very rare movies like that have such a satisfying ending.

wow, i totally forgot about nausicaa! i remember watching it as a child, but under the title 'warriors of the wind' and i actually still have the tape haha but nowhere to play it. i don't think i can add it to my list of ghibli movies watched though, as i read on wiki that it was heavily edited and basically just a complete travesty of the real nausicaa.

i need to watch the real thing one of these days.

You need to. It is one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. Honestly, you must buy it. Now. The music in it is outstanding. It has become my official revision music.

Just finished watching all the Miyazaki films from Castle of Cagliostro to From Up on Poppy Hill. I honestly can say that almost everything Miyazaki directs is a masterpiece. I loved every minute of his films. The only ones I couldn't see were the short films available only at the Studio Ghibli Museum.

The only films that I thought were only okay would be "Only Yesterday," and "Pom Poko." Miyazaki was not the director and usually only served as producer or planner. The director Isao Takahata's work really isn't my cup of tea with the exception of the emotionally depressing Grave of the Fireflies. I can say with certainty though that Miyazaki's directorial works represent the finest that animation has to offer.

Arriety was good, though Miyazaki was only co-writer and planner. The animation was beautiful (as it always is for Studio Ghibli), but I kinda felt that the story didn't really go anywhere. That's not to say that it's bad or anything, just a notch lower then what I usually expect from Studio Ghibli.

My favorite Miyazaki films are Castle of Cagliostro, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away.

Anyone looking forward to From Up on Poppy Hill coming out at the end of March here in the states?

I haven't read up too much on it. I know it's directed by Goro, but I've heard it is so much much better than his previous movie. Honestly, I'm quite looking forward to it.

I look forward to any Studio Ghibli film that comes out in the states because there's not that much 2D animation these days. Not that I'm saying that 3D animation sucks, in fact, I think 3D animation has improved over the years, I adore Megamind and Madagascar 3, The Lorax, etc.

From Up on Poppy Hill was a good movie. The characters were good, the animation was beautiful, and I enjoyed the story. I'd go as far to say that it's the best anime drama film that Miyazaki ever worked on. Only Yesterday and Whisper of the Heart didn't really do anything for me. I was impressed with From Up on Poppy Hill, though.

I wasn't really sure about it before, but now I'm really looking forward to it.

When does it come out in Europe?
