I am a big fan of Johnny Depp, Tim Burton and musicals, so for me this was a must see. I just saw it yesterday and I thought it was amazing! I'm surprised at the fact that every actor in this movie has never had a singing lesson in his/her life, yet every one of them sang wonderfully.

Plus, you have Snape, Wormtail, Edward Scissorhands, and Borat all in one movie. How can you beat that?

Although if you get antsy over the sight of someone's jugular being slit, I suggest not to see this movie.

I wanted to see this movie, I mean, someone's jugular being slit cant be worse then when he hacked though the tree of the dead in "Sleepy Hollow" can it?

My school did the play last year. IT WAS AMAZING. I'm not sure if I can see the movie though, because my mom gets all squirmy about it... She didn't know what Sweeney Todd was about when she let me see it at school :gregory: It's not that she wouldn't allow me, but she would complain a lot and make me feel guilty. Or something.

You forgot Bellatrix.

Anyhow. I'm a huge fan of the musical and I thought it was very well done. The only complaint I have (and it's a nitpicky one), is that one of my favorite songs was butchered. And boy, that last shot before the credits will stay with you for a while.

Oh that's right! I forgot Helena Bonham Carter played Bellatrix. XD

Which song was that?

And yeah, that last scene had me staring at the screen speechless until the credits started rolling.
Spoiler:
I was hoping that near the end he'd finally be reunited with his daughter and that she would bring him out of his mad state. Now Johanna will never know who her real parents were, cuz everyone who knows is dead. :larry: Not that she'd probably be thrilled about knowing her father was a crazed murderer...

greatest movie ever. <333

My only complaints were Joanna's voice and that Alan Rickman didn't change his character from Snape very much.

"Mr. Todd."
"Mr. Potter."

They sound exactly the same. X_X

Other than that, fantastic movie.

Surprisingly good. I went in knowing most of how the story went, so I had quite a fun time watching the movie.

The girls behind me, however, were obvious Pirates fangirls who had NO idea what the hell they came to see. Their assorted noises of terror and disgust, as well as their blanched-white faces after the movie was over, made me laugh really, really hard inside.

As a fan of the musical, I must say that this movie was fantastic! The only thing I really missed was "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" (the song they play at the beginning of the movie is supposed to have words). But the actors all really nailed their characters, and the singing was amazing (particularly coming from a cast that haven't done singing roles before! At least not that I've seen.).

@Pearly: I thought the pie shop song was pretty good, considering that they didn't really have a singing chorus. Mrs. Lovett's and Toby's parts were great. Although I do admit that the chorus's interjections are awesome I still wouldn't call that song "butchered".

Saw the movie over the weekend and thought it was wonderfully done. I just wish my dad and brother felt the same way. The cutting of the jugular in the movie didn't really bother me at all. The ending did, but that's just because I was sad.

Spoiler:
Damn you Sweeney Todd for killing Mrs. Lovett. Once I saw them dancing and him leading her toward the furnace I knew what was going to happen. I was really happy when Toby killed him in the end. :karma: Beat that, Sweeney Todd!

I really want the play to come to my town now. Wishful thinking.

*shrug* I just didn't like the cutting of the chorus I guess. Also, I thought it was Helena's weakest song.

I love this musical ... Even though I'm a total wimp when it comes to horror movies and gore. I had to keep my eyes closed for the entire 'Johanna' song ...

>_< "I can still hear their death gurgles!!!" :beef:

The amount of gore came as a bit of a surprise for me. I had seen the original cast production on dvd a few years before and the gushing blood was limited ... but I suppose you can only fit so much blood inside a fake shaving knife while you're on stage ... It was funny, though, that whenever Sweeney brought his knife down, you could feel the whole theater tense up.

Spoiler:
Man, the scene were he finally kills Judge Horny was massively bloody! The entire right half of Sweeney had been dyed red! I also got really scared for Johanna. I wasn't sure if the movie was going to be changed there and he would accidentally kill her ...

I did miss the chorus ... I mean even if they just put in the Reprise of the Ballad Sweeney Todd at the end it would have added a lot ... Then again ... That last image wouldn't be quite so haunting, would it?

Huge fan of the musical here as well. Movie was excellently executed, but I was disappointed by Helena's singing. WAY too sweet. But that could just be my ear's obsession for Angela Lansbury singing about cooking people.

I was impressed with Depp. For a man that can't sing, he worked his ass off to use his own voice and get it right. I was proud of him. It further proves how talented he is in BECOMING a character. He's one of few I recognize as a true actor.

I suppose I could forgive them for not including the wig song...

It looks so amazing, and I've only heard good things about it. But, I'm not crazy about blood. I guess I can always take the "close my eyes at the parts that make me queasy" route.

XD Yeah, I waited for this movie since it was announced, and even went to a midnight release screening. At first, I thought I was kind of disappointed with it, but then I went a second time and didn't understand how that was possible. The only things I really missed were the opening/closing Ballads, and "Kiss Me" (totally could've developed Anthony and Johanna, but hey, whatever). But other than that? EPIC LOVE. <3

Went to see it a few days ago. I seriously had no idea it was musical, went into it thinking that they were just singing because they were coming back home x_x. Should have looked into it before paying, but I seriously loved it! Got the soundtrack at this very moment and I could go see it again even though it was kinda f'ed up towards the end.

Y'know what song I also missed? The song the Judge sings just before he decides to marry Johanna. I can't remember what it's called but it made him look a lot more evil with plenty of sexual problems ... I know he was already hate-able enough ... I just like hating bad guys to the extreme .... <_<

I think the moment Depp captures Sweeney's character most perfectly is when he sings a couple of lines from Epiphany "Sweeney's waiting ... I want you, bleeders."
No matter how many times I listen to that line it still scares the crap outta' me. He looks almost like an animal prowling the streets of London when he sings it, too

Oh, you mean the Judge's "Johanna"? Yeah, I thought he was sufficiently creepy myself, but that song definitely would've sealed the deal. XD But, since it's cut in most stage productions (I think...), it didn't really surprise me.

Well, the whole musical's made of creepy. A song about a sexually disturbed judge isn't too far off from a song about eating people.

I watched it in the theater with my friend who shares the same kind of morbid humor that I have. When Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett were singing A Little Priest we couldn't stop laughing.. and it seemed like we were the only ones in the theater doing so. XD I guess most people didn't know what to expect when they paid for this movie lol.

Other songs I loved were No Place Like London (I loved the contrast in how Anthony and Sweeney say, "There's no place like London") and My Friends (hauntingly beautiful).

The only actors I couldn't stand singing in the movie were Johanna and Judge Turpin. I was pleasantly surprised at how they were able to properly sing their own roles for the most part. And I always love Burton's style. It worked really well with the whole feel of the movie. Overall the best movie that I've seen in the theater in a long time. :edgy:

And, hey, don't get me wrong, I love Rickman, but he wasn't right for the role.

In my opinion, another nice contrast was in "Johanna", when Anthony and Sweeney were both singing. Not just the voices, but the words. Anthony is going on about how he's going to steal Johanna (creepy), but Sweeney is, in a sense, saying goodbye (while slitting throats).

That is one of my favorite songs. Me and investigator_ema do a little duet with it all the time, here being Anthony, and I Sweeney (since I possess a lower voice :p ). It isn't too good, but it's fun.

I liked the movie a lot. After watching it, my friend and I made a list of suspicious meat because of our fear of meat pies. :P
