First off, this is a thread about the anime called One Piece. All I want to know at this moment is this:

Everyone I know hated One Piece because of 4Kids. When FUNimation liberates it, feelings towards One Piece itself still haven't changed much. What I want to know is why people don't like One Piece. 4Kids no longer has rights to One Piece, yet people still don't treat it as the series it is. I'm confused by this...

There have been a few One Piece threads, but I suppose none posed this question. I'll speculate I guess.

Possible Reasons:
1. Funimation had to pick up in the middle of the series, so it might be slightly difficult for new watchers to jump in. Plus they had to deal with all of the 4Kids imposed "canon."
2. There's the whole crowd of Subs > Dubs people (and unfortunately, this is often too true).
3. On one of the other One Piece threads, some people said they didn't like the new voices (personally I love them - thank you for giving Sanji his dignity back, Funi).
4. And possibly one of the biggest reasons I think would be that Funimation still had to tone down the anime for western audiences. Zoro can't drink sake, Sanji can't smoke, etc. because that's just not acceptable to society outside of Japan apparently.

1. Understandable.

2. If that's the case, then they could have done that already and be in the Thriller Bark arc right now. I was asking about the series as a whole as opposed to just the dub. No excuse.

3. ...as opposed to the old voices? Please! The only voice that was slightly worse than 4kids was Crocodile's in my opinion, but it's not that much of a change.

4. There's going to be uncut DVDs where there will be sake and cigs. if you want proof, pick up One Piece: Unlimited Adventure. If I remember correctly, Sanji has a cigarette lit, though only in the rare instance he's not fighting or cooking. Zoro uses the phrase "I hope there's plenty of booze..." when you access the storage while playing as him. As we should all know, booze is slang for alcohol. If you want more proof, please check out youtube and look for the One Piece FUNimation panel from 2007. They talk about the uncut DVDs and how they will be completely unedited. *edgeworth bow*

So, in all honesty, your first problem is the only one I relate to and agree with.

I already actually made a topic about this. But I'm not exactly sure why they don't, unless they watched the anime first and didn't bother reading the manga. Cause I still loved One Piece despite it's lameness on 4Kids. I honestly think when Funimation took over, that it was a refreshment from the damage 4Kids caused.

Hey, I did say it was all speculation. I am aware that the DVDs will be uncut, but honestly, a very small fraction of viewers actually buy DVDs. The main method of dissemination for Funimation's dub will still be Toonami, so they can't reach such as wide a audience as the original Japanese version did. The original appealed to a very large age group, from young children to adults, but in America, the genre forced onto One Piece is fairly... kiddy I suppose. There are probably many factors which play into the downplaying of the redub, not just the ones I listed. Still, the series isn't dead. Even 4Kids managed to get a few fans before the angry mob drove them off. Funimation is just having to deal with trying to pick up the pieces from 4Kids's botched attempt.

Oh, here's the link to that other One Piece thread where people were complaining about new voices: viewtopic.php?f=20&t=6113 . I don't understand why since I rather liked the new ones, but I guess if you get used to something it's hard to switch, even if it's better. :garyuu:

Okay, most of them had no idea what they were talking about. Yes, Krillin's and Piccolo's voices are revived. So what? Barry the Butcher's voice from FMA is revived as Kaku the Giraffe as well as Winry's voice also holding true for Vivi in a sense.

I think that the similarities in the voices are a plus as people can relate FUNimation to other equally stunning work they have done in the past.

Also, someone said Usopp's voice was better in 4Kids? Did you not hear Usopp going through puberty the past 100 episodes!? Zoro's voice is better, just listen and compare the japanese to the 4Kids to the FUNi and you'll hear that Zoro NEEDS a deeper voice than the 4Kids actor could probably manage.

Finally, If you thought Sanji's 4Kids voice was better, you are either:

1. Being Sarcastic
2. Deaf
3. A Complete Moron

:grossburg: Ahh, the works of 4Kids... like the smell of fresh sh*t, you see.

Like I said before:
Humorously cheesy > Generic boredom.
I'm no anime fan so while I like the violence (and the other extreme stuff), excuse me for enjoying the cheese while you whine.

I understand this. One Piece is supposed to be humorous and serious at the same time. I just don't like my anime forcibly altered by a force I have no control over.

I used to make fun of this show all the time because of how cheesy it was. Everything from the rap intro to the "wonderful" voice acting. That was mostly the reason why I watched it. If they're going to redub it, then maybe the show would make more sense, and I'd actually watch it because it was good.

I believe you are behind the times, good sir. They already redubbed it. It's on Cartoon Network's "Toonami" block at 10PM. After the hour block of dubbed Naruto which I don't watch anymore.

One Piece is one of the greatest animes of all times. It's 340+ episodes of awesome. The great thing about those 340+ episodes is that very little of them are filler which is very rare for shonen anime (looking at you Bleach and Naruto). Though I can't say the funi-dub is bad by any means compared to the general slaughtering that was the 4kids dub I still heartily recommend watching it all subbed and experience the awesomeness for yourself.

Besides they have a talking, perverted skeleton on their crew that has a huge afro and drinks milk to heal his bone fractures. What more could you want?

P.S
If you need further proof of One Piece awesome watch this:

>_> Some people complained that his JP voice was already too deep... I think.

Well, I love One Piece. I think it's my favorite anime...
I pick the episodes in http://www.pieceproject.com/index.php
(it's a Brazilian site, so you'll never undertand xD)
Besides, I never watch OP in TV...but my friends told me it's really bad. (I don't know the voices in english, so I can't say nothing...but I know they cut a lot of things.)

I liked the funimation version of One Piece all right. But recently they took it off of Cartoon Network on Saturday nights. I searched for the reason and finally found that it had been put on hiatus. Although, CN has yet to say whether it is permanent or not.

That happened with Rave Master and Zatch Bell as well...

I hope this doesn't continue...
