Bloody Mary and Migel became fully oriented at the same at the same time. Their eyes locked for a split second before they moved.
Bloody Mary's bleeding hand had already clotted by then and she clenched a hard fist to make reopen the bleeding but Migel already had his weapon ready. The middle knuckle of the mechanical hand slid back and revealed a small pistol head. Bloody Mary barely got her cape up fast enough to block the bullet. The impact of the blow made her backpedal quickly to regain balance, keeping the cape facing Migel and his hidden gun (
that was a little surprise she was glad she hadn't had to find out in the heat of battle). Migel didn't take a second shot. He slowly stood, gun pointed, bracing himself against the golem for support.
"I believe," Migel said in his usual even tone, his anger only betrayed by the homicidal gleam in his eyes, "we just got gypped."
No shit! She wanted to scream. Everything that should have gone as according to plan wasn't. Two people had gotten the drop on her twice that night. The first had run off with the book to god knows where and the second had just made it difficult for her to go after the first. Were they working together? If so it had worked out very conveniently. If not she was going to take care of them both eventually. Especially the thief.
She toyed with the suggestion the thief had made of beating the answers she needed out of Migel for a second and she shot it down for the same reason she did every time. This time, she had an added reason. His men were starting to wake up, along with that golem. Migel was a bitch to fight even without those. Besides, it didn't look like Migel was in the mood for a death match with her at least for the moment.
A groan from one of the henchmen confirmed her guess. She began walking backwards towards the door.
"Are you going after that boy?" Migel asked. She didn't reply. "I will as well. If you can beat the Magliozzi family chasers...the door to negotiations will be open again."
Bloody Mary flipped him off before stepping out the door.
She held her anger well enough until she saw spotted a nearby trashcan. She calmly walked up to it before bashing it in with a neck snapping kick.
Mildly satisfied, she took the rooftops from the nearby fire escape and began to look for clues. There was still enough time to look before the trail went completely cold. If that failed, she'd look up the thief some other way. After all, how hard could it be to find a wind using thief?
