Since she'd lived at Hazakura for over half her life, Iris could find the kitchen blindfolded. Even without that knowledge of the old temple's layout, the aroma of sizzling egg, popping sausage, and other cooking foodstuffs wafting through the halls would have doubtlessly led her to her destination anyway. The fact that breakfast was apparently on its way before she'd had the chance to start it suprised her a little: the person she suspected as the chef was probably at least as tired as her late-night "patient." Iris peeked around the door frame, and sure enough, there was the woman she thought of as her own mother, hunched over the little iron stove, hard at work on the first meal of the day.
She walked up to a few steps away from the cooking area, hands folded behind her, and scanned the various pans and their contents. "Can I help?" she offered, almost childishly.

"Take this over for me." She said softly and climbed off the crate. With a few wobbled steps she plunked down in a nearby chair. In her youth she could have performed a complicated cleaning and still have enough energy to stay up for two more days before her body ached as much as it did now. But then, of course, she was getting old and likely wouldn't have much spiritual energy left in her. Normally a woman in her place would leave the temple to a successor, but it was only her and Iris there, and Iris didn't have a shred of spiritual energy. She was a wonderful girl, but she just didn't have enough of the Fey blood in her. It was the reason that woman left the child in her care. After all, the temple was already dieing. Why not put her somewhere she couldn't embarrass the family name? Bikini snorted and her small brown eyes traveled along the battered wooden walls. She would need to refresh the kanji that was starting to flake off the lines. The heat and smoke in the kitchen always weathered the ink too fast for Bikini's liking. .:.

That way my pain will be minimal, you'll still have the satisfaction of watching me bruise and bleed, and there'll be less evidence to lead the police to you." Subconsciously he held out a hand as if to forestall a question or protest. "Joking aside, your advice rings true. I shall follow it. Do you have any other questions? Should I hand the phone back to Emi?".:.

.:."Oh don't worry. I kill quick. I'm not into the whole extended pain sadism thing. Sorry about the snapping thing, see Emi caught me in the middle of a soccer game and I just set a leg. Say hello to the man on the phone, Bobby." There was a pause and the shaky voice of a young boy came on.
"H-hello." Then there was another pause and some rattling as the voice switched back.
"Few things to keep in mind when you take her in. Emi likes patterns and consistency, so try not to have things change too drastically. The medication she takes reacts poorly with peanuts, but if they're in her food and you serve it to her she'll eat it anyway. If that happens don't freak out. It'll pass so no need to take her to the hospital or anything. Sometimes you won't even know she's eaten any until she throws up on you. She's really easy going unless you try to prevent her from drawing. Psychiatrist did that once and she stabbed him with a letter opener. Nothing morbid, she just jammed it into his hand. She was just trying to explain how it felt when she couldn't draw, but the doc took it the wrong way. You know how some guys are. As far as refilling her meds and visiting the doctor she'll do that on her own. She won't tell you she's leaving so if you just notice her gone she's likely at one of those two places. But if you're really worried she always answers her cellphone and she'll tell you exactly where she is. She takes her meds twice a day at eight AM and PM. If she's a little late or the meds will overlap and make her sick so it's best that if she missed her time that she just skip that one. It's just for her anemia so it's not really a big deal if she misses taking them for a day or two. She really likes Italian foods, pretty much anything that has noodles covered in a tomato sauce. She hates spicy stuff and if she cooks you anything be aware that it's going to have an insane amount of sugar in it. That one is sort of my fault since she's used to making stuff for me when we were kids and I had a real sweet-tooth back then. If she does make you something just eat it and tell her how you like it prepared for the next time. Got all that Gregor Helmer?".:.

As Iris turned the pancakes over, her stomach spoke up again. She quickly turned her reddened face away so Bikini wouldn't see it. It couldn't be helped; everything just smelled so good... She'd thought about making up some of those little omelettes Feenie liked so much, but it seemed they had more than enough food as is. Were they expecting guests?
"H-how did the cleansing go, Sister?" Iris asked, once she'd managed to force back the burning in her cheeks.

Bikini always sounded full of pep when she spoke, but Iris could always tell when she was getting tired by the fact that some of her mental censors went away. "Sharp as a whip that one though. More than he gives himself credit for to be sure. Why he should be up and about at full capacity in no time...still though...he's not going to be quite the same as he was. He may even be a different man completely. Parts of his soul were consumed in Dahlia's fire and the patching process was difficult. "O-oh...well, that's good to hear." Iris smiled weakly. "That he'll be okay, I mean." She turned back to her cooking. Different? But Feenie was perfect the way he was. She couldn't imagine him any other way; just the way he acted so abnormally yesterday scared her to death. Then again, it was sort of silly to expect things to just go back to the way they were after everything that had happened, and something was starting to smell smoky. He was lucky to be in as good a condition as he was. Now that she thought about it, he'd been through a lot of hardships since she met him. Had he always had such a tough life? Was something burning? Or did things only get so difficult for him since they'd gotten together? But he always seemed so happy, and she believed-
Iris yelped when she finally noticed the food and turned the heat down. The pancakes hadn't been charred too badly.
She let out a deep sigh and retrieved some platters from the cabinet to her right. "Maybe he would have been better never knowing me after all..." she mumbled under her breath as she filled the plates.

Iris blinked at her surrogate mother, mildly stunned by her words. Her suprise swiftly dissipated, and with a faint blush and serene smile, she carried breakfast out of the kitchen.
Although there were no windows in the main hall of Hazakura Temple, it remained suprisingly well-lit by the candles at the altar of the lesser magatama. The lack of much anything else in the room besides the squared, floor-level table in the center meant the meager lights could cover a great distance. Iris set her plates of food on the sole table, then went to the stack of zabuton cushions next to the altar and collected a pair. She looked at them quizzically, returned to the open kitchen entrance, and poked her head through. "Do you suppose I should wake Fee-Mr. Wright for breakfast?" she asked Bikini, unsure as to why she'd suddenly decided to refer to him formally.

"Who's call?" Asked the man in question as he leaned rather groggily against the doorway. Not even Bikini had heard him walk up. His dark eyes traveled over to Iris and he smiled softly. "Sorry, I woke up and you weren't there. Then I heard voices so I decided to get up. Was I supposed to stay in bed? I'm not entirely sure how these sorts of things work."
"How much of the past few days do you recall?" Bikini asked.
"I'd rather not at the moment. Maybe when I've slept some more." Phoenix said softly.
"Of course." Bikini nodded. Phoenix pushed himself off the wall walked over to Iris, and wrapped his arms around her waist as he rested his chin on her shoulder. "Are we eating? What are we having?" His voice was barely even audible, but his mouth was close enough to Iris' ear for that not to matter. .:.

Iris dropped the cushions behind her and returned Phoenix's embrace, shutting her eyes as she rubbed his back lightly. "I'm sorry," she whispered back, her cheek pressed against his. "I didn't think you'd be up so soon and I wanted to have breakfast ready for you... Sister Bikini beat me to it, though..."
After holding their tender hug for about a minute, Iris placed her hands on Phoenix's shoulders and gently pulled herself back so she could face him. "Let's see... We have fried eggs, scrambled eggs, buttermilk pancakes, buckwheat pancakes, Belgian waffles, sausage, bacon, Canadian bacon, home fries, hashbrowns, toast, French toast, English muffins... Oh, and I was planning to slice up some cantaloupe if we have any." She tilted her head a little and smiled sweetly. "What would you like?"

It wouldn't have been concerning if Iris hadn't noticed his heart beating hard and fast enough to break his ribs. He muttered something but the only audible part was the word "hot" which would have been much too soft for her to have been able to hear had his face not been so close to hers. "I need air." He broke away from her and walked numbly to the exit. He wasn't really properly dressed to be out in the thick morning snow. He hadn't even bothered to put on some shoes before he attempted to push open the thick wooden doors. He wasn't succeeding.

Bikini didn't look concerned. Of course she was also asleep in her chair at the moment. .:.

"Feenie, no!" Iris hurried to the door before Phoenix could get it open and dragged him away from it; she'd never be able to manage so easily if he was healthy. "You can't go out like that, and besides, you're still sick!" Lacking a proper thermometer, of course, she pressed her palm against his forehead. "Oh, it's worse than I thought..." she fretted as she retracted her now damp hand. "You're burning up and dripping with sweat..." Half-panicked, Iris quickly took matters into her own hands and pulled Phoenix's sweater up and off him. "Is that better? What about your pants? Are they too hot, too?"

When he opened them again his perfect vision returned and now he was a bit cold from having his sweater taken off. He also wasn't sure how he'd gotten into the main hall.
"Is that better? What about your pants? Are they too hot, too?" Iris sounded as if she thought the world was about to end.
"No, my pants are fine..." Phoenix was very tempted to say yes, but the look of worry on Iris' face stopped him. The hairs on his body rose in an attempt to keep him warm. "Ah...could I have my sweater back now?" .:.

Then came the instructions, which sounded very helpful but hard to memorize. After listening intently to Scott's informative speech, he pulled out a pen and stuck it in a belt loop. "Okay, I need to make sure I have all this down. Let me get a piece of paper." Reaching into his backpack with his free hand, he pulled out a stuffed folder which he rested against his chest. From the folder he produced a corrected assignment. He would write on the back. Now came the difficult part: improvising a hard surface and light source with which to write. Ballet training, don't fail me now. Bending his legs so that he was in an almost perfect sitting position, he rested the folder on his thighs and gradually sank onto the snow, where he stretched his legs further out in front of him to make the angle less steep. Producing his own cell phone, he opened it and braced it sideways just above the folder. The backlight was dim, but it would have to suffice. "Sorry this is taking so long. I should be ready soon." Fetching the pen from his belt loop, he hit the release button against his knee and rolled the pen end over end in his hand. Now he was ready to begin. "Okay, patterns and consistency...check. No peanuts...check. Let her draw whenever possible...check. If she's vanished, call her cell...check." Darkness reasserted itself. The backlight had gone out. "Gah...Stupid cell phone." Putting down his pen, he reached for his light source, closed it, and reopened it. "There." Picking up his pen once again, he resumed. "Meds at eight and eight. If late, skip...check. Likes Italian, hates spicy...check." He chuckled. "Cooks very sugary food...check. If she cooks, just eat it and tell her how you'd like it next time...check. Alright, I think I have it all. If I'm missing anything, please correct me. One question: in the 'spicy' category, do you include basil, Italian seasoning, and stuff like that or just the stuff that really burns? Oh, and one last thing: you can call me 'Greg'.".:.

Breathe in, Iris. Breathe out. Okay. Good. Now she was more calm.
She slid her arm behind Phoenix's back and hugged him gently, protectively. "Feenie, you're still very sick and weak," she informed him with her soft, sincere voice. "Go back to bed, alright? I'll pick some food for you and bring it to you shortly." She paused, thought about what had just happened when Phoenix was left unsupervised for even a short time, and squeezed him a little more firmly. "On second thought... It'll only take a minute to get your breakfast. I'll do that now and walk you to your room so we can go to bed together."

The smile on his lips, though wide, looked strange and plastic. Behind him was a blurred sketch of a man, his head held low, his body slightly slumped. It was impossible to see any detail on him at all. .:.

The young woman's eyebrow twitched incredulously. She took a step away from Phoenix and tilted her head, eyeing his face warily. Not that she didn't trust the man, but even she was having a hard time believing he would be okay by himself after the stunt he'd just tried to pull. Then again, how much trouble could he get into just going back to his room...right?
Finally, she let out a resigned sigh. "Alright, Feenie..." She quickly forced out a smile; the last thing she needed was him worrying about her. "I'll be in to check on you after I'm done. I'll try not to take long."

Suzumi sat on her bed, her head was resting on her knees. Something bad had happened to her face. The colour had left it and there seemed no emotion, as if she were a zombie. She merely stared at her knees, her eyes looked as if they belonged to one with no heart left.

(OOC: This is for the subplot for Meghan, Chris and Jade. A bit lazy at the moment to do the little dots that say so. x.x)

Not even a day had passed since the tragedy that nearly taken most of their lives. The night was pretty restless for Chris, Meghan and Jade, even though they all slept (not in the same room, of course; Jade had gone back home for the time being) eventually.

This particular morning was going to be no exception. Meghan had decided to go check up on Chris, and was surprised to see him trying to sing in Japanese, and failing miserably at that. "What are you doing?" she said with an amused tone.

Chris stopped the song, and turned around, a bit red in the face. "Trying to sing in Japanese. Ah-hah..."

"Well, I think it helps to learn Japanese before singing it..." Meg giggled.

(OOC: Blame me listening to Makka na Chikai right now. I can partly sing it, myself.)

.:. Phoenix smiled at her again, gave her a hug, and went back to his room. He fell forward onto the bed and almost immediately fell asleep. He remained unconscious for all of one minute before his eyes popped open and he sat up rather quickly. He looked into the corner of the room to see a young woman in white standing there. He had passed her on his way in, and was a little shocked that she was there.
"Help him." She said in a whisper that sounded like her lips were next to his ears even though she was on the other side of the room.
"I-I'm sorry?" He swallowed. "Do you live here?"
"Please, help him." She pleaded again. "He's lost."
"Who's lost?" Phoenix got to his feet. The woman pointed, but when he drew close to her she vanished. Phoenix turned to see her staring at him through the window.
"This way." Her voice reached him even through the walls. Phoenix clenched his jaw, decided this was probably a dream, and opened the window.

He plopped onto the snow and looked around. The girl was standing under some trees when he spotted her, so he went that way. .:.

Meghan blinked. "Where?"

"I've... got to go to Hazakura Temple. I know that Phoenix and Iris are there right now."

Meghan rose an eyebrow. "They're probably spending time together... and Phoenix has to recover."

"That's not why I'm going. I... have to say something to them."

"What is it?"

Chris sighed. "I have to apologize to her. I'll explain more while we're on the way."

Meghan got her stuff and went with Chris to the Temple.

After a long hike, they reached there, and Chris waited by the entrance. .:.

You're somethig else, you know that? Hesitant to break the silence but conscious of no other option, he began to speak. "Uh...Emily...here's your--whoa..." There was something...eerie about this picture. A shiver ran up his spine. He couldn't quite place it, but something about the man in the foreground seemed familiar and...malevolent. He wasn't given to superstition; why else would he have adopted 13 as his lucky number? Even so, he had the irrational feeling that someone had stepped on his grave. "Emily...who's that?".:.

.:. Phoenix followed the visage of the girl deeply into the woods. The trees grew thick and the area grew dark. He was beginning to realize he'd gone out without his shoes, nor did he had any idea where he was going. Just as he was going to turn back, he stopped. There was a dog there, cold, shivering, whimpering, unable to even move. He stepped up to it slowly and a weak wag of the tail greeted him. Phoenix bent down slowly to touch the dog, but something caught his eye and he found himself immediately looking at it. There was a finger in the snow. Upon closer inspection he realized that the finger was attached to a hand that was buried in a blanket of white. He quickly began to brush snow away and started to uncover the body.

He didn't remember screaming when he got to the face, but the birds around him did fly away and he was staring at it ass first in the snow. He shuffled back as if the body were going to stand up on him, but it didn't. It was the girl he'd followed. A little more blue than before and quite a bit more dead, but her all the same. Phoenix couldn't breathe. .:.

.:."Oh...okay." There was no use in probing further, and really...did he want to probe further? What little Gregor could glean he did not like--not at all. "His real smile"? "Only seen it once"? If I'm reading this right, he's killed before...and she saw him immediately afterward! Oh man...that would definitely explain why she's so quiet and...detached. Note to self: keep guard up. Even so, I hope I'm wrong... Realizing that he was wasting time, he snapped out of his bleak reverie and pursued practical matters with a vengeance. "I suppose you lost a lot of clothes in that...fire. Would you like to stop somewhere to pick some up? It's on me--all of it. I'm already neck-deep in debt, so what's a little more?".:.

It took little time to reach a store. Emi walked behind him like a shadow, never looking up from her sketches. When he stopped inside so did she, but she showed no interest in the clothes around them.
"Hello!" Greeted a young woman in department store uniform. "Can I help you find something today?" She asked with the fake sort of smile that was beaten onto your face in the world of retail..:.
