"...Looks like we have to hurry. If there's one thing I'm bad at, it's solving riddles. Especially when rushed," Elizabeth said, noting the chairs moving. "So the wall will move 3 inches every fifteen minutes. Interesting." She pulled out the note one more time to make sure she had the riddle correct, then tucked it back in her pocket. "64 places to be, neither of them could be at the same place if they are alone. One of them takes the place of a beggar...This is one tough riddle. I hope we can solve it on time."

((For reference, every 4 posts = 15 minutes, or 9 hours of inactivity = 15 minutes
We'll say that at about an 1:30 lapse, that the wall will be a foot from your chairs, and at 1:45 lapse, the wall will completely encase the dinner table. Everything after that will be posted by me. Hope this sparks some of the horror I mentioned. Good luck.))

"Ha! You kids wouldn't last five minutes at sea. I've had my share of life or death moments. The key, as always, is to not panic. The trick is to do it."

Werfel thought of his revolver, but quickly put that thought to rest. That would be cheating! Besides, I hardly think that even some creative thinking using it could get us out of this situation.

"As for the puzzle... hmm... actually, my first was "Jew", sorry if I'm being racist.

When I think of 64, my mind races to the fact that it's 2^6, and an important number in computers and math, so it could represent some sort of pattern or configuration, but probably not. Outside of these subjects, it doesn't ring any bells.

The word 'brother' could be metaphoric or literal, either way, it represents a close bond. 'Alone, we are not allowed in the same locations'... that reminds me of a sort of partner relationship, where they mutually benefit.

'Ice' could mean various things, such as if he's a skier, ice road trucker, or just some traveler in the snow, ice, or what have you. However, there is an important connection between 'ice' and 'tar'. Tar is a black liquid-like substance, but I don't remember its uses.

The letter says 'most importantly' about the segregation act. So, there is a sort of separation, unjust when viewed by the public, but not necessarily to the brothers. The only exception is when he takes the place of a beggar. A beggar is usually assumed to be someone who has no money, food, job, or shelter, and resorts to other methods to keep himself afloat, meaning the segregation may appear to benefit him for some reason.

The last bit of the letter is also very important. It's very possible that the answer is literally our ticket out of here, not just an answer to stop the walls, but the very thing that will save us."

"Damn!" Elias yelled as he ran for the door. (I know this isn't going to work but just let me do it...) "Maybe..." He slammed the door with his shoulder, "It has to do with tires. One is a spare he keeps for icy roads while the other is the main tire for the asphault." He continued to slam his shoulder into the door, "Maybe it's something in the room, a switch?"

"Genius! Hmm... the regular tire would travel on asphalt, while the other tire would have chains or something for traveling on ice. They can't drive in the same places... but what about the 64 places thing? And the bit about the beggar?"

Sophia listened and pondered the riddle intently as the walls crept ever closer to the table. She then said, "Well, the phrase, 'when I take the place of a beggar' may refer to the tire replacing an old or flat tire, but I'm not so sure about the '64 places...to travel' part of it." Then turning to Elias, she said, "Mm. You're not going to get anywhere with continuous pushing. As Mr. Ingmune stated, it's a game of logic. No amount of physical power is needed, but only logic. We need to find the answer to the puzzle, or none of us will live for even two hours more, let alone fifteen days."

((This is the fourth post after. Two more and the walls get closer once more. And there's only an 8-hour time difference between this and the post by L_J.))

"The tires seems plausible," Nathan said, trying to calm down, "since tar could be a synonym of asphalt (as in tar pits = asphalt pits, for example), and both ice and asphalt can be used as driving surfaces."

The 64 places... They could be stages, not necessarily locations. We must remember that these brothers can't be in the same place at the same time, and the amount of places they can travel to, together, is 64. We have to find some object that works with a pair, so they would be considered "brothers", and are limited to an area with 64 places. Also, both objects can't be in the same place, which could mean they work separately...

What I don't understand at all is the beggar part... "Our travels are commonly considered as a segregation act by most; the only exception to this is when I take the place of a beggar"... This means their travels, which they always make separated, is considered if they were travelling to be separated one from the other... The only exception to this is when one of them acts as a beggar... This could mean they can't be together, so people believe they travel to be separated; but, they don't think this when the first brother takes the place of a beggar. What could "take the place of a beggar" mean? Hide one's appearance?

Elizabeth, the part about the answer being the "ticket out of here", was in in the letter, or was it just a thought of yours? This could be crucial." He looked around, and recalled Elias had tried to break the door down, but couldn't. He wondered if a key would work, or if there were a button or switch to open the door, or any other exit conduit.

"The letter didn't explicitly say the answer to the riddle would be our ticket out of here," Elizabeth answered. "But it strongly hints at it." Right when she was going to say more, the clock chimed. The walls moved three inches closer. Elizabeth sighed. "Well, maybe we should try coming up with another answer. It could be a tire, but maybe something else fits better with the riddle?" Why did he give me the letter? Is there any particular reason? Maybe I need to come up with the right answer myself...

((Treat as 9 hour inactivity))

The wall creaked closer, about 7 feet away from the chairs, as the china cabinet screeched across the floor, meeting the other side. A half-hour remained until the walls would completely barricade the table, and an hour until everything was sandwiched.

Howl flipped through his monitors, and caught the dinning room surveillance. He laughed. "Schadenfreude, I believe it's called; The enjoyment of other people's dismay and pain. Ha, guilty as charged." He mused himself. Maybe these weren't the contestants he was looking for... He checked his watch. "Hm, an hour left. Maybe I should go ahead and send the clean up crew, or..." He flipped a switch as a buzzing noise came over the dinning room. He fastened a small headset to his ear, and spoke to the trapped competitors.

"I see you all are becoming closer with each other, figuratively and literally. I don't know about you all... but I sure would do anything to get out of there, like maybe thieving the key that a certain someone has, oh wait," He toyed. "That's me. And I don't seem to quite catch the impulse of anyone making it out of your situation. Heh, an hour left... And here, my friends, I leave you with these kind words:

Checkmate, maggots."

Howl flicked off the microphone, leaning back in his chair with that once pleasant smile returning to his face... but with a different meaning for it. He nodded; "It's definitely Schadenfreude."

Nathan heard Mr. Ingmune, and something in him clicked. The 64 places, ice and tar, beggar...

"Mr. Ingmune," he shouted, "is the answer the black queen chess piece!?"

Howl laughed as he pressed his receiving end of the communicator.

"I'm afraid I do not have any cigars, Mr. Daw--"

"My answer would be the black bishop."

Howl kicked his desk as he heard these words.

The door to the kitchen emitted a soft humming sound as it slowly unlocked, opening itself to the cooking plaza.

Collecting himself, he laughed at the insult of Elias.

"It looks like the slow one is finally catching up with us. Welcome back."

He eyed through his layout of his mansion. So far they had access to the dining room (For something of 45 minutes) and the kitchen. Not much, but still adequate room. 1 down, 14 to fire. Maybe they could survive his game... "Yeah, and I can fly. He spoke through his mic again.

"Go on, plea your victory, or stay in the dining room. That's fine too."

The aroma of food simmered through from the kitchen; the source being 6 large tables with 6 sets of silver dished food on each table, a letter attached to rather large refrigerator with 'Nathan' written on the letter's front.

"Oh, whoopee, Nathan. Looks like you'll be getting the next puzzle," Elizabeth said as she looked at the envelope. She then smiled pleasantly at the camera in the room.
"I know you think this is a game, but human life is not something you can take away just for fun," she said calmly. "My mother, Sheila Axiom, believed in never taking life from those that deserved it. I believe I am starting to hate you, Mr. Igmune. Which truly is a shame, since Mom's dying wish was for us to get along."

((Howl isn't in the same room as Elizabeth, he's in his 'HQ' if you will.))

Howl tapped back his communicator.

"Nobody has died yet Ms. Axiom. And as for your mother, she was probably the only person who knew me for the person I wanted to be known a-- That's not important right now. And who's mistake was it to accept my invitation? Your mother should have warned you sooner. But what can you do?" He laughed, watching everyone surveying their dual-surroundings.

"Mr. Ingmune isn't that big of a jerk Jurgen." Elias said as he sat down at the table, "It be too easy. It's just like Jigsaw from Saw. He gives his people a chance, watches them suffer to learn their lesson. Plus, who knows if that wall would have really closed in on us." Elias reached into his pocket as he sat down at the table and pulled out his box of cigs. His hands were shaking, though if it was out of fear or his addiction he couldn't tell. "Well Nathan, your move."

Elizabeth smiled.
"Yeah. I guess so," she said. "You think you're so clever, don't you? Really, you're just a miserable, old, friendless man who couldn't come up with better people to give your inheritance to than a random stranger who you think in some way will become the next you. So, I suppose I shouldn't be the one complaining here, should I?" She looked at Nathan. I wonder what near-death thing Mr. Ingmune has planned this time.

((Um, Lida? Why do you keep missing the "n" in Ingmune?))

Sophia sighed, knowing that this arguing with Mr. Ingmune was not going to get them anywhere, but seeing as the man could see and hear them from here, she faced the camera and said apologetically, "I'm sorry, Mr. Ingmune, for being late. I had to help my mother with her work. She said you would understand, but she also said that as a prosecutor, evidence is everything, so I have a letter signed by her." Then turning to Nathan, who held another envelope, Sophia said, "Well, can you read to us the contents of the letter now?

((Sorry for the lateness- besides the timezone difference, I've been SO busy at the moment...))
This is twisted... Arianna thought as the walls backed away and feeling the familiar tightness in her lungs, retrieved her inhaler from her purse and took several puffs. She raised her eyebrows slightly at Sophia- this man had almost had them crushed like icecubes and she was apologising to him? But she was also eager to know the contents of the letter Nathan held. Something told her she wouldn't be getting out of this house without it- if she ever made it out.

((Freaking timezones. I might take this long for me to post from time to time, so bear with me. Thanks for beign patient so far ^^' ))

"Oh, right, bishop." Nathan said, after Jürgen said it. He had forgotten the letter was from a man, and spoke about his brother. Then, the walls backed off, and he felt a huge wave of relief. He walked towards the kitchen's refrigerator, and picked up the letter

"Personally..." he started, when they were discussing shortly about Mr. Ingmune's attitude, "I also believe Ingmune to be a sick, sad old man..." He paused. "But you have to admit, his senses of logic and wits are admirable. Don't get me wrong, I do think what he did has no limits, but you've got to give it to him..." He sighed, and opened the letter. "Okay, here I go:

"Hm, so at least one of you all survived to open this, I guess you think
you all are top of the top. Yeah, and you're going to make it out alive.
Anyways, before you, sit 6 tables, each with perfectly identical food
upon the six plates that rest upon each table. I'm sure you are all
hungry from the missed dinner... so here's my proposal;

Find the one table of food out of the six that is not laced with polychlorinated biphenyls.

For those not fluent in deadly chemicals, it is on the 'Stockholm Convention on
Persistent Organic Pollutants' list of 12 forbidden deadly chemicals.

How to find the untouched food? Simple. A riddle.

-------------------------------
Music = D
100 = 20
Power/Square Relation = 2
This letter = 29

[H5]
-------------------------------

Luckily for you, there is no time limit.
Be warned, that if the above wasn't clear enough, taste the wrong food and that
will be the last thing you taste alive."

Nathan paused, and read the last letters. "Welcome to Hell." He couldn't help but smile a bit, but then punished himself innerly for doing it; he made another pause, and finished reading the ending of the letter, which read "Signed, Mr. Ingmune". He put the letter in his pocket.

"Well, at least we don't have any time limits." He watched the 6 tables. It was absolutely unnoticeable that 5 of them were poisoned... Just one of them edible.

Elias stared at the food as he listened to Nathan, "Five of these are poisoned..." He looked at Jurgen, "Shut up. I know you were right, but shut up." Elias walked over to Nathan grabbed the letter with his hand (not tearing it out, just grabbing it while letting Nathan grab the other side). "Music=D could have something to do with a music key. Power/Square relation... A number squared is a number two times... As for the others I got no clue."

...Mr. Ingmune's not saying anything. Maybe I was being too harsh. Scratch that, I was definitely too harsh. I should apologize when I next see him...If I do.
"'100=20'...Well, we all know that 100 divided by five is twenty, but then it says, 'Power/Square relation=2...' Maybe I'm thinking about this too much again. This letter=29. Music=D...Yeah, like the D key on the piano or a D string on a stringed instrument. But what does that have to do with the food?" Elizabeth shook her head. I don't understand these riddles at all. I think today is riddle day, tomorrow...I don't know what. I'll just have to help however I can.

"Wait, I think you might be onto something here," Elizabeth said. "These could be a certain order of notes to play in the key of D...Like, these could be frequencies of sound that would cause some sort of reaction..." Oh, come on. That's just stupid.

"I have an idea...." Arianna interjected. "Presumably, the answer we're looking for is a number- the table number which has no poisoned food. If we try lining up all the notes in the key of D, maybe the letters will correspond to numbers? So, let's see, we have D, E, F, G, A, B, C, D...." she trailed off, twirling a strand of hair around her finger. "It may not work, but it's worth trying."

"The question is where we should start." Elias muttered, "There are six pieces of food and seven notes, wee keep going until we find which one is right by which one isn't sharp. D, E, F sharp, G, A, B, C sharp, D. A B Csharp D, E Fsharp Gsharp A." He muttered to himself as he went around the circle of fourths.

((Sorry for my absence. And....is there a relation between [H5] and {11T}? I know, I doubt that it's completely unrelated to the answer, but why would they be there?))

As Nathan read out the letter, Sophia thought, "Oh, how I wish I could test the food, but it's against the rules." She then sighed, and thought out the details of the puzzle. She was never so good at puzzles with numbers, because she always had either hands-on work or riddles and lateral thinking puzzles, yet considering that her life was at stake, she had to solve this, eat the food in a 1 out of 6 possibility that she would live, or survive hunger. To her right now, however, the third option seemed the easiest as she'd done it before when she was on the job. But back to work. "What can 'This letter=29' mean in relation to the other equalities?"

"I have no idea. It could be a red herring," Elizabeth said. "Or...Maybe it doesn't mean what we think it means. It reads, "this letter=29," but he could be being ambiguous and really meaning there is a certain letter in the key of D that equals 29." She blushed very slightly. "On the other hand, I could be way off the mark."

"Well..." Nathan said, while walking along the tables, "we have 6 tables with 6 plates each. That's 36 plates. When considering this number, "this letter=29" comes to my mind. Maybe plate number 29?" But what with it..., he thought. "As to the D pattern, I'm not really sure it means anything, but... There are in total 12 notes in a single-pattern keyboard, counting flats and sharps... Now that I think about it, 12 is 1/3 of 36, so there could be a relation there."

"Maybe," he said, raising his voice a bit, "we should count each plate as a note, so there would be 1 keyboard every 2 tables, meaning this 6 tables could be 3 keyboards." He sighed and shrugged. "That's all I've got. Now, as to "100 = 20", "Power/Square Relation = 2", "This letter = 29", I have no idea."

"Now that I think about it, the key of D thing isn't what we should concentrate on, at least not the way we've been thinking about it. With seven notes in a key and six tables, they don't fit together." (So I didn't notice anything special about the tables? It was just a joke but are there any small details?)

(Like are there any identifying marks such as each individual plate marked with a number, since the tables are numbered?)

((Nope. The only numbers are the position of each table in the order of 6.))

((I don't have a clue yet. >_< This will be one long night in the story.))
I've been away for far too long.
So long, in fact, that all of my signatures now exist behind a paywall.
Bummer.
