Chris wouldn't stand for that. "You're going to turn yourself in for your sister's sake?" He wasn't going to let the fact go. "I realize that you must love your sister, but please, grow a bit of a backbone! You can't allow yourself to go to jail for something you never did! If you go to jail, guess what? Dahlia will keep hurting people. It will solve nothing! All you'll be doing is hurting yourself... nothing more!"

Phoenix had been watching this all in a little bit of a drunken stupor. He just hadn't known what to say to her when she opened the door, and then there were the officers, and the story...
His Dollie...had she really hurt this people? No...it had to be someone else. It had to be this other girl they were talking about. He might not know his girl's name, but he did know her. Phoenix's eyes narrowed and he stepped directly between Dollie and Chris.
"I lied." Phoenix interrupted. "I lied about all of it. Dollie told me everything she'd done and I...I just wanted to protect her. So I made up the story about her having a sister." He still couldn't really remember what happened, but that sounded plausible enough.
Phoenix's face was red and his stance was unstable. After making his defensive plea to Chris he turned to Dollie.
"Is this why you thought it wouldn't work?" He put his face close to hers. "Dollie..." He brushed his fingers against her cheek and tucked a cluster of hair behind her ear. "Dollie, I don't care. I will always love you, and I will always do anything for you." He pulled her into a tight hug and whispered his next words into her ear. "If this is what you really want then I'm behind you. I will lie to god himself if you want to go to hell." Phoenix had no idea where all this poetry was coming from. Must've been the six appletinis.

You know the truth; just end this barrel of lies so I can actually get some information about Dahlia and protect the both of you from her!" He looked like he was about to snap. "Otherwise... as much as I hate to say it, the police will be arresting this girl."

Phoenix didn't understand why there was a question here.
"Because I love you." He answered simply. He held her as close as he could. "Please, don't cry, Dollie." He lifted her chin up with his finger and gave her a bright, albeit a little lopsided, smile. "If you want we can get away right now. You just give me the word. I'll take care of this guy and we can run forever. We can go somewhere no one will ever find us." His eyes intensely met hers, but the moment was broken when he jerked his head to the side so he could sneeze.

Iris tried her best to obey Phoenix's request, but her tears weren't ready to stop falling yet. She could tell he was serious; he would really leave everything behind for her. It sounded so wonderful, just the two of them... No. She couldn't let him throw his life away like that, not for her, not for anyone...

"...Dahlia needed the necklace. Her very life depended on recovering it. I offered to get it back for her, but if I knew things would turn out this way..." She breathed deeply and continued. "Last night, I gave it to her; she said she was going on the run, but I don't know where. That's all I know..."

She buried her face in Phoenix's shoulder again, still sobbing. "Forgive me, sister..."

Phoenix was so relieved that he almost crushed her ribcage when he hugged her that much more tightly. He knew it was time to let go of her, so she could go and talk to the police, but he just couldn't bring himself to do it. Then the realization hit him.
"Your sweater!" He pulled her out to arm's length and gave her a desperate look. "I'm so sorry. I got angry and I took it off!"

An awkward moment of silence passed before she remembered she was supposed to be getting dressed. She sifted through her dresser for a simple lavender sundress, took it with her to the bathroom, and emerged wearing it a few minutes later.

This made Phoenix very happy since last time it made him rather ill, and this time he was pretty much guaranteed to throw up on somebody.
Of course he had a lot of things to be happy about right then. Iris was back in his arms, he had a really good excuse to not go to any of his advanced courses, and appletinis are delicious.

Chris drove around the area, keeping a good lookout for any viable places to hide. He kept thinking he saw a car following him, as the same one kept coming behind them and then driving off, but he paid no mind to it.

Phoenix slipped down in his seat at about the same time he was starting to slip out of consciousness. Even with the fever ridden few hours, and the sedative induced eight he got at the hospital, it felt like forever since he'd really just stopped and rested.

Chris kept looking left and right at the places. Nothing seemed to work. Maybe a shut-down place would work? He decided to look around the downtown area for a shut-down building.
