"What's up with him?" The man asked. "Did something bad happen? Is there anything I can do to help?"

"He was arrested for murder," Martha replied, starting to sense the man was genuine. "And he's worried about his family. I'm not sure how you can help..."

"Oh I can help more than you think. All I need you to do is drop the case." The man smiled, exhaling smoke from a recent inhalation of his cigar. "If you can do that, I'll take care of the rest."

"Let's just say that I'm a good friend of Al." The man said, maintaining his smile, as he blew another puff of smoke from the cigar.

Martha concentrated on not gagging on the smoke. "Do you have any connection with the mafia?"

"Why would I? Are you accusing my attorney friends of being involved with the Mafia?" The man asked, clearly avoiding the question.

"Very well then." The man said, losing his smile. The car began to slow down. "Is that your office?" The man asked, pointing outside.

"It's best that you leave." The man said. "It may not be the best place to drop you off, but an attorney values sleep, does he not?" The man asked, disregarding the fact that Martha was a woman, and that he said 'he' when asking.

The man scowled, as he closed the car door after Martha left, signaling to the driver to leave.

The next day, and eventually, the trial, will start when Martha goes to sleep.

Martha thought she wouldn't be able to sleep that night. She tried to think of a way she could save her client without him losing in the end. Eventually, she didn't know when or how, she fell asleep in the chair.

Martha woke up with a start early in the morning, having had a nightmare that she overslept and missed the trial entirely. She looked at the clock. 7am. She got up and got dressed, ate a hurried breakfast, and walked out the door, taking the longest way to the courthouse she could think of as she had two hours to kill before having to be there.

((Insert character!))

Walking the sidewalks with a black suitcase in hand was a tall man. He had a white t-shirt and loose jeans on, with a messy set of long brown hair falling over both the front and back of his head. The dude could be called a 'skater-punk' or 'hippie' because of his crazy, laid-back look, but his eyes had a different gleam to them than one who 'fights the system'.

As it so happened, he was on the same path that Martha was, and just ahead of her, his slow gait easily letting her start to catch up with him in no time.

He pulled an orange tootsie-pop out of his mouth and looked up at the sky with a look of relaxed determination. Unfortunately, he also stopped in the middle of the path, no longer noticing where he was or what he was doing.

Martha accidentally bumped into the man as she was staring off in space on her walk and didn't notice the man until it was too late. "E-excuse me," she said. "Sorry!"

He dropped his lollipop, which broke on the ground.
"Hm... ah, it's nothing, really." The laid back guy said. "I probably shouldn't have just stopped like that. Thinking deep thoughts, mental preparations and the like, ya know? Thought the sidewalk probably isn't the perfect place for that... I should probably wait til I get the my destination..."

He swung his suitcase casually over his shoulder and began to walk again. He turned his head back to call out to her again, an dhad the stick of another lollipop sticking out of his mouth. "Well, maybe I'll see ya around sometime, Miss."

"Maybe," Martha said. "I...Shouldn't have been staring off into space like that either. Sorry." She started walking, not noticing that she was following the man.

Martha and the man walked down the same path for a while, until he finally noticed she was still there.
"So~..." He said, looking back at her. "What's your name? I assume that if we are gonna be going the same way, we might as well chat."

"My name? It's Lucias Meracad, although my friends call me Louie." Lucias said with a big grin, the lollipop stick wedged between his grin.
He stopped smiling for a moment and then said very seriously, "You seem troubled. S'something the matter?"

"A-ah, I see... sorry, I guess I'm just to used to being myself, I forget everybody else is different... ah, did that make sense?" Said Lucias, whatever attitude he had before now seeming more air-headed. "Still, it never hurts to talk. Sometimes offloading your troubles to a person you'll never see again helps you think through it. At least, that's what I do-- you should see how some folks on the buses react, it's actually rather comforting when we really get talking."

Lucias was fiddling with the lollipop stick, looking at the sky again and clearly remembering things.

"Um...I guess..." Martha said. She knew she wouldn't be able to trouble people on the bus with her problems, but maybe telling someone what was happening wouldn't be a bad idea. "If you really must know...I...er...My client is going to be killed whether I get him a 'not guilty' verdict or not. I guess I'm still futily trying to come up with a solution where the man WON'T die like that." The creases on her forehead were noticable now as she admitted her concern.

"Your client is gonna be killed... even if they get a... not guilty verdict? Huh, it sounds like whoever you are working for got arrested for something pretty nasty, heheh! I can feel for ya, you must really like your clients to be so worried about them going to court." Lucias spoke, completely missing the truth that Martha was a lawyer. "So... do you mind me asking what you work as? I mean, I don't know many people around town who cares for a client that much... unless money is involved. He doesn't still owe you money or something? Hm~"

"A... a defense attorney!?" He said, his face darkening beneath his thick hair. "So, you are a defense attorney, huh? Well, then..."

He stopped in place, then turned around, breaking out in laughter at something obviously funny. "You won't believe me if I told you, Ms. Lawyer, but I'm a attorney, too! Well, not a defense attorney... I'm a federal Prosecutor, you see. I have a case to work on also today, although I don't know any of the info for it-- it's a policy of mine, to go in blind."

"Going in blind? Isn't that a little...I don't know...risky?" Martha asked. A federal prosecutor, huh? And working on a case on the same day? Weird coincidence...

"Risky, sure... but it's just what I do. And it works every time-- I have all the case details here in my case here" Lucias said hoisting his suitcase, "as well as all my other case info, like people possibly related. My investigation force does a good job, and even though I don't see it all myself, I can pick up on things pretty simply."

Then he covered his mouth in mock shock. "Oops! I shouldn't go telling details to the 'enemy'! Ha hahah... sorry, it's just you don't usually meet people from the other side of the court."
He thought for a moment. "Say... what kind of case would you have to deal with that will end with a death sentence regardless of the verdict?? What is this world coming too..."

"Like I said, I haven't the faintest." He said, crunching away on the sucker in his jaws. "They hand me the info in sealed envelopes, per my request. All I do is read the name of the defendant on the case-folder. Some guy... Al-something-another. He's the guy I have to prove guilty today."

"Yeah... eh, I'll take a look at the case early for ya... lesse..." He cracked open the suitcase slightly and began to flip through the contents. Then he pulled out a casefile. "Normally, I can't do this, but yeah, seeing as you are a fellow lawyer, I might as well tell you this guys full name."

He read it a bit, then his eyes widened in surprise. "Lookie, lookie, it says that this man, Al Ma...Mak-ee... Machino, got it! Al Machino, this guy is accused of murder. It's all I can say, actually, to somebody not related to the investigation, suffice to say... that this guy is going down for what he did."

Lucias paused for a moment, then realized something. "Oh, talk about coincidences, I guess I am working on a Murder case." He looked up and saw that the path lead right up to the federal courthouse. "Ah! Look, we are here!"

Lucias kept his easy pace, keeping the case details in his hand, and watched Martha go.
"I'll see you later, maybe? We could go for some coffee after your case session is done today, I know mine'll be finished within the next few hours!" He called to her. "Good luck! Make sure your client stays safe!"
