"Sister Bikini..." Iris leaned down to hug her surrogate mother warmly. "I'm sorry to have worried you... A lot has happened, I..." She trailed off as her tired mind finally processed what she'd just seen. "E-excuse me..." she apologized, pulling away. On shaky legs, Iris walked cautiously towards the very familiar man in Hazakura robes standing in front of the phone booth. She grabbed his arm, spun him around, and stared at him with wide, trembling eyes. She opened her mouth to speak, but her voice wouldn't cooperate, so she took a different approach. Iris threw her arms around Phoenix and wept into his chest, squeezing him with all her might as if her embrace was the only thing keeping him from vanishing from the face of the earth. Words could never hope to express the immesurable relief and joy she felt then anyway.

This girl obviously knew him. What was the name he'd heard just then? Iris. He couldn't really do much more than hug her back and rest his cheek atop her head. She felt familiar to him, and it pained him that he couldn't remember why. His face remained blank as he held her trembling body.
"Iris! Do you know, Mr. Lucky?" Bikini asked her. "And who are your friends? Oh! You should all come back for soup! I have plenty left!" Then her eyes shifted to the canyon. "Did that bridge finally fall down?" Her hands shot up to her mouth. "OH! Mr. Lucky! You must have fallen trying to cross the bridge!" She placed her hands on her hips. "Well that would certainly explain why I found you down the river."
"I must have..." Phoenix turned his head to look at where the bridge had once been. His voice was been coarse and soft, just as it had been since he woke up. He wondered briefly if that was his real voice or just a product of events. He forced his attention back to the girl crying on his chest.

"...you're alright...thank god you're alright..." Iris eventually managed through her sobbing, not noticing Phoenix's odd comment about the bridge. After taking another half minute or so to calm herself a bit, she loosened her deathgrip on Phoenix's torso and turned to Bikini again. "T-thank you for inviting us, Sister, that would be wonderful... I can ride ahead and make preparations if you'd like..." she sniffled.

"And leave your friends here? I wouldn't hear of it!" Bikini smiled up at Iris. There was a sly glint in her eyes when she looked at her and the man she called Mr. Lucky. It was obvious when she said 'friends' she mean 'mysterious new boyfriend'. "I'd offer a plow, but I only have the one! I'd walk back, but this old back of mine might snap before I got there!" Bikini hopped onto the plow. "HOHOHO! See you at the temple, Iris and friends!" And with that she sped off.
"What a strange woman." Phoenix commented under his breath. Phoenix hadn't let go of Iris just yet, something in him didn't want to. He was trying to determine why she might have been so worried about him. Was she a relative? No, Bikini would have surely known him then. Perhaps she was a close friend? He certainly felt like she could be. Was she a lover? He sincerely hoped so. She was so beautiful and warm to the touch despite the tears that were freezing to his chest.

After Doug and Greg managed to get their earstwhile guest into the car, they set off towards Hazkura temple. Unfortuantely they were beset by one of the greatest perils to car drivers everywhere... a traffic jam. 'Why on earth did they have to do road-works here today?' Doug thought to himself, as he was perusing through his british magazine. It was then when he saw something. Doug popped out of his seat in amazement and shouted.

"HEY GUYS! LOOK OVER THERE!" They did so, but all they could see was a car with the driving seat on the right hand side. "I can't believe I've finally seen an AUSTIN HEALEY 3000!"

Something felt a little off: Phoenix was awfully quiet...wasn't he? Iris attempted to control her tears (to little avail) and looked up to him. "Are...are you okay?" she asked hesitantly, then immediately turned away, ashamed for asking such a stupid question of someone who'd nearly died just a few hours ago. "...no, of course you aren't... I'm so sorry... If only I'd tried a little harder to keep you from coming..."

She slid out of the hug slowly and backed away a couple steps. "W-we should probably get going. I'm sure the others are getting cold out here..."

He should ask her who she was, but he couldn't bring himself to do it. It looked like she'd been through enough already and really didn't need him compounding her worries.
"Yeah, it is cold." He agreed with a nervous smile and a laugh to accompany. The laugh lasted a few breaths too long to be anything but forced. "AH HAHA aha aha haaa." He capped off and coughed. "Yeah...we should probably start walking then." He walked rather swiftly just so he wouldn't have to see the strange looks he was probably getting.
At least the dork question had been answered...

"I..." Iris started, but stopped herself as Phoenix hurried away towards the temple. Something was definately wrong. He'd returned her hug, yes, but it still felt as if he was being...distant? He'd barely said a word to her since reuniting, he'd walked right past her to the phone upon arriving as if he didn't even recognize her, and now here he was politely laughing as he rushed away as quickly as he could... It was becoming more and more ridiculously obvious as to what was going on.

He was absolutely furious at her.

She certainly couldn't blame him, of course; it was entirely her fault for leading him up here and she'd done nothing to prevent his near-fatal fall into the river... That pathetic apology she'd just offered him probably only made him angrier, but he was doing his best to not let it show...

Iris dropped her head and followed solemnly once Phoenix had advanced a couple dozen feet ahead. She really wished she could stop crying, she was cold enough without her tears freezing and stinging her cheeks.

Chris, Meghan and Jade quickly got out of the car. Chris locked it, and they followed Iris up towards the temple.

Chris hurried up to Iris, noticing her crying. "What's wrong, Iris? You're reunited with him... why's he ahead of you?"

Meghan ran up beside him. "He did seem awfully odd... he walked right past her to the phone initially... wouldn't he have hugged her right off the bat?"

"You're right..." Chris contemplated the situation and a solution. When nothing came, he figured that some clue would come up soon.

Phoenix didn't realize how much distance was between himself and the group until he reached the temple and turned around. These were probably his friends and he'd just left them in the dust...well snow. To make up for this he gave them an enthusiastic wave and a smile. The girl, Iris, still looked horribly upset, the man and woman confused, and another young girl had a big oblivious smile on her face. She was probably just happy to be included. The other three probably knew something was up. Phoenix had sort of hoped he wasn't acting too weird.
"Um...I should probably tell you guys something." He rubbed the back of his head tenderly.
"SOUP'S ON!" Yelled Bikini right on her dramatic cue. "I've set the table! Now it's all just getting cold!" She ushered everyone in and started to shut the thick wooden doors that led to the outside. She was having a bit of trouble so Phoenix pressed his shoulder against one door to help push. The doors were heavier than they looked.

Once the doors were shut, Iris slinked up next to Phoenix and whispered to him. "It's alright, I already know. You don't have to tell the others..." She had a feeling Chris might start a fight with Phoenix if it came out he was disgusted with her, and she couldn't have that. "I'll be right down, Sister," she told Bikini, and with a slight bow, she rushed off to her room to change.

Phoenix looked surprised. So he was being pretty obvious about the whole thing after all. He watched her run off with blank wide eyes and blinked. Why would she tell him not to tell the others? Was she concerned about upsetting them like he'd been with her? Or perhaps there was another reason. Perhaps either she or they were responsible for his condition. He cast his eyes through the group as they all were ushered into the kitchen by Bikini.
There was a table set and ready and a bowl of soup steaming in each place. Phoenix wasn't really hungry, even though a place had been made for him. He wanted to talk to Iris some more.
"Could you all excuse me, please?" He smiled over at them and wandered in the direction Iris had gone. He could hear movement in one of the rooms so he walked up to the doorway. He kept his eyes to his feet in case she were doing something she may not want him to see. "Um...Iris?" He hoped he'd gotten the name right. "Why shouldn't I tell the others?"

"Trouble?" Phoenix repeated. "I don't think I want any trouble either but..." His gaze shifted from the floor to the ceiling. "Well, you seem to know more about what's going on then I do and I just want to know what it is." His voice was still soft and coarse. He was starting to suspect that might just be what he really sounded like. "What's going on, I mean. Not why you know..." He grabbed a clump of spiky hair. "That doesn't make much sense, does it? I'm sorry. Since I woke up things have been getting sort of jumbled...maybe...maybe I don't want to know what's going on...but could you-" He swallowed and actually made eye contact with her. "Could you tell me my name at least?"

"Your...your name?" Iris mimicked incredulously, feeling what little strength she had left in her wilting. She stared at him for several moments, then swallowed hard before daring to speak again. "You...aren't joking, are you?" she asked rhetorically; she could tell by his face he wasn't. She walked over to her bed, using the wall as support, and sat at the foot. "It's Phoenix... "Wait, what did you-" He took a breath and went to sit next to her. "Nevermind. Maybe...maybe there's a reason I don't know." He said to the floor. After much time spent quietly fuming at the wheel and thanking his sweet Messiah that Doug was too interested in the "Austin Healy 3000" to be angry, Gregor finally managed to get the minivan parked in front of the temple's Main Gate. Took us long enough...Well, better late than never. The main gate's open...good. We have no time to waste. Without a word to his comrades, Gregor left the minivan and made a beeline for the temple proper, his mind focused exclusively on his purpose: Find Phoenix. The door was closed, as expected. Throwing forethought to the wind, he immediately gave the door a sharp, almost staccato knock.

Amnesia. It all made sense now... But even that didn't stop him. Even when he'd forgotten his own name, he remembered her, cared for her, loved her... That was how much she meant to him. It was so utterly...unbearable.

Iris crumbled in Phoenix's arms and bawled uncontrollably. It just wasn't fair. Every sweet word he spoke, every adoring touch, they were like beautiful knives in her heart. She'd done this to him, to the man she loved. She'd lied to him for months, nearly led him to his death on that bridge, robbed him of his memory...and here he was professing his love to her. The guilt was making her physically ill, and how dare she feel happy for his adoration after everything she'd done. Was she cursed to constantly hurt everyone important to her? First her sister, and now this... She ordered herself to tell him to let her go, that he deserved so much better than a terrible, pathetic woman like her, to forget about her and let her rot here in her room, alone; even that would be too good for her. She was, of course, too weak to say that, too weak to do anything but remain in his arms and choke on her tears.

'It's painful now. It won't be forever.'

Iris clung desperately to the promise he'd given her and the belief it would come true. She felt she would die from the despair if she didn't.

"A friend of Mr. Lucky!" Bikini clapped and moved so he could come in. "A lot of people are looking for him." She added. "His other friends are in the kitchen. He is with Iris at the moment." She put one hand over her mouth so that her loud whisper wouldn't travel as far. "I think they're making love."

Bikini wasn't entirely inaccurate in her assumption. In the moment's intensity Phoenix had pulled back in his hug and went in for a long kiss. Something in the back of his mind told him that it was poorly timed, but he couldn't stop himself from doing it, and it took quite a bit of effort on his part to pull away to the point that their lips barely brushed one another.
"I'm sorry." He apologized. "I couldn't help it." He pressed his forehead against hers and took some time to breath, as jagged as it was. He wanted so badly do go in again, but he'd wait for her consent.

"It's...it's alright..." she breathed quietly. As Iris' heart raced from the brief kiss, her emotions struggled for dominance. This wasn't right. Giving in now would be taking advantage of him. He didn't remember what had happened earlier today or he wouldn't be so forward with her...would he? Was he just trying to cheer her up? Even though it only lasted a second, that certainly didn't seem to be the meaning behind it...

She clenched fistfuls of her robe on her lap and tried not to blush. "Is...is this really what you want?"

"Waking up here." Phoenix wished he could tell her more than that, but he couldn't. It wasn't even as if his memory was fuzzy, or trapped in a fog. It was simply gone. He could remember big things, math, english, random bits of law, all the earned knowledge was still there. He just couldn't remember how he came to know all of it or the people involved in his life. Or what his life even was before he came to. But how could he explain that? It barely even made sense in his head. "All the stuff before that is just gone."

"I...I see," Iris answered after several seconds. She didn't really; she was trying to imagine how it must be to just not be able to remember anything beyond a couple hours ago and wasn't making much progress, but it wasn't as if pressing him would help. "I'm so, so sorry..." She gently took Phoenix's hand again to get his attention and looked him in the eyes, addressing him with as much determination as she could muster. "I'll help you through this. I promise..." She could never live with herself otherwise...

A big smile flashed onto Phoenix's face and he clamped Iris into another hug and held her that way for quite a while. It just felt so nice he didn't want to ever let go again. After some time he pulled away again, but didn't make it far before he pressed his lips against hers again. Any reservations to pop into his head now were quickly beaten into submission by the all mighty young male libido.

Iris knew she shouldn't be doing this. She had no right to this bliss, not now, but...she couldn't bring herself to resist anymore. She shut her eyes to the rest of the world, squeezing the tears out of them, and surrendered to Phoenix's embrace. Selfishly, she stroked his hair, hugged him dearly, kissed his lips tenderly, all the while begging her conscience to let her have this time to be happy. She only hoped he wouldn't ask why she was crying.

"I was so worried about you..." she whispered.

Phoenix's hands wandered. Probably to places that they really shouldn't. He had no idea how far he might have gone with Iris before, or where it was okay to go, but he wasn't really bothering to think much at this point. He just wanted to feel her against him and to never let her go. He couldn't let her go...
Phoenix took in a deep breath and suddenly peeled back. The look of utter shock in his wide black eyes reflected the sudden rush of memory he'd gotten. Everything he'd lost came back in a flicker of a moment. His chest heaved roughly, he couldn't seem to catch his breath as his most recent memories rushed past. When they'd finished the distant look of horror melted into deep concern and he clamped Iris in yet another hug. However, this one was different from the others. This time it was from fear.
"Oh my god! Iris! I'm sorry! I lost my grip and-" He swallowed back the shaking in his voice. "I'm so happy you're okay!" He laughed and pulled back in his hug without actually letting her go. Pure joy sparkled in his eyes. "I never want to lose you again." The soft coarseness his voice had was gone now. It'd given way to his normal strong happy tone.

Iris blinked in confusion at Phoenix's sudden change in attitude, as if he suddenly didn't know what was happening, but his frightened hug and words clued her in. "You...remember?" she asked hopefully. She sighed in relief, but that quickly gave way as it occured to her that he knew how she'd been acting moments ago. "I-I-I'm so sorry!" she apologized for the hundredth time that day. Her face flushed beet-red, and she averted her eyes towards anything to keep from having to look him in the face. "I...that happened to you because of me... I should have told you, and even worse, I was...I-I can't believe I took advantage of your amnesia like that...I'm so disgusting..."

"What happened happened." He said with a genuine smile. "I don't blame you for any of it." He gently grabbed her chin and turned her head to look at him. "And believe me, you weren't taking advantage of me." He said with almost a primal growl. "If anything had happened I wouldn't have regretted a second of it." A single soft laugh puffed from his nose. "You know, it still could if you want."

Iris didn't think it was possible for her to get any redder, but she'd been proven wrong before. "W-well, I...I'm not sure, I mean..." she flustered, the right words escaping her. "I mean, I-I just don't know if I can, you know, since... What I'm saying is, um... D-do you think we should? I mean, well, I-I've never... I wouldn't want you to...y-you know... Not that I don't trust you to...to... B-but, I mean, there's always... And, and everyone is..." She froze, mortified as something dawned on her. "W-wait...what did you mean?"

"We could keep making out." Phoenix said innocently. "What were you so-" Something dawned on him as well. "Really?! Ah...I mean." He coughed. "Well I've never...either...so...and you're right...we aren't exactly alone...aaah...ahaha." He cleared his throat. "I wouldn't mind though...if you wanted to I mean. You can say no. It won't hurt my feelings any." He added sheepishly. "Oh look! A door!" Phoenix wanted desperately to escape the awkward moment he'd just created.

Several moments of this passed until she slowly, hesitantly slid up to Phoenix's side. She rested her head on his shoulder, tears forming in her eyes again. "I...I was so scared I'd never see you again..."

Meanwhile, somewhere, out there, Larry Butz was hitting on some girl in a bar, Mia Fey was working on a case, Maya Fey wished she had a hamburger, and Grossberg was complaining about his poor buttox. The world was going about its business whether or not Nick and Iris were in it, but Nick was just happy that they both were. He couldn't imagine his life without Iris in it, and wondered, briefly, if she could hers.

Never before had he been so happy for and irritated with the same person at the same time. I'm glad you made it out with your life, Phoenix, but if you are in fact boffing her, methinks you've only escaped the freezer to throw yourself into the furnace. An exasperated sigh escaped his lips as his eyes shot heavenward. Oy veh.

Despite everything that had happened to them, she always felt so safe at his side like this, as if nothing could possibly go wrong. "Do you remember what you said in the taxi today?" she murmured into his neck. "...Do you think the painful times are over?"
