"I-I went without your permission..." Elizabeth squeezed her eyes shut, "I-I know I will be punished...But please, please can I stay?"
She knew that if Melanie was here, it meant that she was going to have to go with her, and she knew that she and mother would be very angry that she went without their permission. And after hanging up on her, mother would be furious.
"No, I just want--" Melanie began, but Elizabeth cut her off before she could even explain.
"I'm sorry for disobeying you! I shouldn't have left without asking. I know I have been stupid and broken the rules...But I...I...I don't want to leave. I want to stay here. Please? I will never, ever leave the house again, and I will never ever disobey you like this, and I will do whatever you tell me to, but please can I stay for a little while longer?"
Elizabeth stared up at Melanie with her sad blue eyes, pleading her to give her one more minute.

"...Liz." Nadine interrupted her ramblings and used her hand to turn Elizabeth's face away from Melanie's. "She isn't here to take you away," Nadine turned to Melanie and gave her a meaningful look. "Right?"

"R-Right," Melanie nodded, seeing for the first time the sorrow in Elizabeth's eyes, "I just want to talk. That's all."
Elizabeth turned her head to look at Melanie, "...Talk?"
"Yes. Talk," she nodded again.
"...Why? About what?"
"I have realised...Your friend here...She..." Melanie struggled to find words to explain what she was trying to get across, "She said that you are...dying inside."
"That's because of my illness."
"She said that...that your illness might have been made up by your Mother. You might not be diseased at all."
"But..." Elizabeth furrowed her brow in confusion, "Why would Mother do that? She hated me because my illness made me stupid. Why would she pretend that I was sick if she hated me for it?"
"I don't know, Elizabeth."
A silence descended upon the three women, only the wind whistling in the noiseless street. Elizabeth slowly turned to face Nadine again. She stared into her eyes, as if trying to find something, "Nadine...You know everything...Tell me why Mother would do that."

Nadine chuckled softly. "Everything? Not quite. But I think I know this." Nadine motioned for Melanie to sit down. "...I think that maybe, your mother is afraid. You are a grown woman now, and fully capable of controlling your own life. But maybe, your mother isn't ready to let go of you just yet. I think that she may have invented an illness, to keep you close to her, even if it meant feining hatred..." Nadine shook her head. "But of course...I could be wrong."

((Whoa, sorry for the delay. I've got exams coming up next week TT_TT ))

"Yes, yes, that must be it," Melanie nodded furiously, sitting down. She wanted to reassure Elizabeth and, although she had absolutely no clue how to do it, she decided that backing Nadine up would be a good start, "She must have pretended and made up an illness so you didn't abandon her."
"But..." Elizabeth said, her voice almost a whisper, "I would never, ever abandon Mother. I never had any reason to. She looked after me and made sure that I was safe. She may not have loved me, but she protected me from everything bad in the world. People would take advantage of me just because I had an illness. Mother made sure I didn't mix with the wrong people, people that could harm my 'delicate mind'. Mother was there to keep me away from nasty, evil people that could hurt me. She didn't want me to end up like Daddy...I was all she had left. If I got hurt, then who would she have to ignore?"

((S'okay. Exams>Roleplay XD))

Nadine laughed lightly. "Mothers will go to all sorts of extremes to protect their children," she said, shaking her head lightly. "But it just means that she loves you more. You haven't ever told her you will be there for her if needed, have you?"

"Well, no, but I didn't think I needed to--"
Melanie cut in before Elizabeth could finish, "Of course you needed to. How else would she know? People need to be told that they can rely on someone to be there, not just guess. I know that you probably don't understand what I am trying to say Elizabeth, but it is not your mothers fault that she has treated you like this. She was only trying to keep you with her, because she thought that you would run away on her as soon as you got the chance. All you had to do was say nicer things towards her. It was as if you didn't care about what she was going through at that time. Yes, I know you were young and naive then, but even children know how to reassure someone. Well, maybe you didn't, but I am sure you had even the tiniest inkling that she might have been feeling a little down. You really didn't help her recover from the shock of losing her only treasured possession. Not at all. In fact, she would probably have recovered better if she didn't have a difficult child like you to clean up after." Words gushed out of Melanie's mouth before she could even stop to think what she was saying. She clapped a hand over her mouth, as if to stop the words getting out, and stared at Elizabeth's guilty face.
Have I really talked to her like that her whole life?

Nadine looked at Melanie in exasperation. "You know..." Nadine shook her head. "To help Elizabeth's self esteem, it isn't best to say she's difficult. Especially as she isn't."

"I know...I'm sorry, Elizabeth," Melanie sighed and smiled apologetically at Elizabeth, "You aren't difficult. You're probably the easiest person in the world to adore."
"No, you're right. I should have been nicer to Mother. She was in a lot of pain..." Elizabeth stared off into the distance, as if looking for a thing that she couldn't quite see.
"Yes..."
Silence descended upon them for a moment. Not the type of silence that creates tension, like the stillness before Count Dracula jumps out and attacks the blonde girl about to open the door. The type of silence that means that everyone is content, and if thinking over what to say next.

"I...I don't think you were wrong to come here tonight," Melanie muttered softly, half talking to herself, "I think...I think you were meant to meet Miss Nadine here...I think you deserve a proper friend..."
Melanie rose from her seat on the steps suddenly, nodding courteously to Nadine and Elizabeth, "You deserve someone better than me or Mrs Day. I wish you a world of happiness, Elizabeth. And you, Miss Nadine. Look after each other."
Elizabeth looked up just in time to see Melanie turn away, the skirts of her coat swirling as she reached the bottom of the steps and started across the road, "W-Wait!"
Melanie stopped, but kept facing the road.
"You're my friend too! You've always been my friend. You don't have to go..."
The slowly growing wind whipped amber hair over her pale skin as she turned around. The dullness had lifted from her eyes, and she was staring at Elizabeth with such confusion that it made Elizabeth a little dizzy, "Why are you being so nice to me? I was horrid to you all your life, never telling you anything, and you are still sitting there, saying I'm your 'friend'?"
"You weren't horrid, Melanie."

Dark, sad eyes stared at the grave, begging to god it was all a dream, a dream gone horribly wrong, the grave never existed. As a hand lay itself on her shoulders, the first flake of snow floated to the soft, overturned soil.
Thinking back before the sky darkened, she remembered the joy she felt as she waited in the garden ‘that’ day, knowing nothing could go wrong, as the happiness within her was only true when they were together. She ran through open gates, calling loudly to the black clad figure approaching, waving her arms for hope of being lifted up. But this was not the person she was waiting for. They ruffled her hair, walking past her into the house, but with gloved, cold hands...
"Do not cry, Elizabeth," a voice spoke quietly behind her, their hand squeezing her shoulder, their copper hair brushing her cheek as she fixed her gaze on the tombstone.
She ran to her kitchen, smiling as she swung the door open wide. Nausea churned her insides. This couldn't be real. The smashed plates littering the tiled floor like fallen blossom was a lie. The black figure closing the door behind him with the peak of his hat pulled down over his face was a lie. The crumpled, bloodied figure of her mother slumped on the floor, surrounded by shards of glass, a red stream of blood flowing from her hand was a lie. This world was not hers.
"You do not need to be scared."
Her legs weakened, and she crawled to her shaking mother, cutting and slicing her skin on the broken plates, but not feeling anything through her numbness. Blood stained her hands as she stroked her mother's tear-stained face. A slap, and she fell backwards. A scream echoed through her swirling mind. A hand under her lifting up...up... A soft jumper being soaked by her tears.
"You are safe."
A warm flannel was pressed to her bleeding cuts, soothing her slightly, a white lotion rubbed gently onto her wounds, cold and slimy but necessary. Blue eyes stared out from behind black hair, staring at the person sitting on the bed beside them, healing their hands and knees. The person did not take any notice, their hands as cold as ice, their emerald eyes hidden by an amber fringe falling over their face.
"I am here," the voice grew warmer. Now as she gazed at the name engraved into the tombstone, two weeks had passed. The lies were real, the hope was spent, her fond memories broken into a thousand pieces, each one cutting a new wound into her heart with it's razor sharp corners. Faded pictures of happier times flitted across the single lily laying frozen on the over turned soil, as beautiful and as perfect as it was when it was growing in her garden. Since then hearts have been broken beyond repair. Since then lives have been ripped apart and strewn everywhere. And with innocent blood still burning her young flesh, nothing could ever be the same. The perverse people had fought and won.
"I will protect you."
And the grave was left with one more flower of regret...

Nadine smiled at the 'meant to meet' part, and watched as Elizabeth seemed to sink into a distant memory. After about a minute, Nadine shifted, and cleared her throat. "What are you thinking about, Liz?"

"You promised," Elizabeth said suddenly, snapping away from her memories.
"What?" Melanie asked. She wasn't even sure if Elizabeth was talking to her, as she was staring blankly at the alley behind her, but she answered anyway.
"You promised to look after me."
"Yeah, well..." her fringe shaded her eyes as Melanie hung her head, "I didn't do a very good job of that, did I?"
"Everyone deserves a second chance."
"And I didn't give you one, I know--"
"I meant you, Melanie," Elizabeth interrupted. She focused her eyes on Melanie down-turned face, watching as she gave her a puzzled look from behind the curtain of amber hair, "You deserve a second chance. To do what you didn't do last time."
Melanie stared at her, wondering if she wsa joking or not. Why doesn't she just let me get out of her life? Why doesn't she turn her back on me? Why can't she see that I'm not anything but dead-weight?
"Off the road, you dozy cow!" a annoyed but slightly amused voice echoed through Melanie's pondering mind, accompanied with the sharp squeal of tyres trying to come to a stop. She jumped back to see a black, flashy car pull up beside her. The window was wound down, "Are you coming, princess?"
"Who..." Melanie muttered, but her question was answered when a familiar head poked itself out of the open window, a charming smile painted on the tanned face, "Alex? What are you doing here?"
"To pick up you, my love. What else would spur me to come to this side of town?"
"How did you know I was here?"
"A little birdie told me," the smile widened, and Alex tapped his nose, "In the form of little Elizabeth's mother. How is the darling child, anyway?"
"She's over there," Melanie jerked a thumb behind her.
"Let her off her leash?"
"She broke the leash, with a little help from Zelia."
"Ah, the free-willed minds of children."
"You're one year older than her. You can't really call her a child."
"Details, details," Alex waved his hand as if Melanie's words were annoying flies, "Now, are you coming or not?"
"Well..." Melanie looked back at Elizabeth over her shoulder, biting her lip.
"Go talk, say goodbye, whatever," he shrugged, "I'll wait."
Melanie nodded and jogged over to where Elizabeth was still seated, holding onto her scarf to keep it from blowing in the wind. She looked down at Elizabeth apologetically.
"Alexander is here," she said. Elizabeth nodded, "Should I go?"
"Well...you can do what you like."
"But..." Melanie glanced from Elizabeth to Nadine desperately, "I don't know what to do."

Nadine sighed and looked up to the sky. "You should both do what you want, not rely on each other. This is how this whole fiasco began; Elizabeth had no freedom of will to do as she pleased, she was kept within the wills and minds of others. Melanie, you were decieved and kept from the truth because of the will of Elizabeth's mother. Of course, choices that are selfish are an exception, but you should generally do what you believe is right, and not be too swayed by others." She lowered her gaze to the girls and smiled dazzlingly.

"Quite right," a voice said from behind Melanie, a smile obvious in their tone. Melanie sighed, knowing all too well who this person was going to be.
"Here we go again..." Elizabeth muttered, then raised an eyebrow at her new-found sarcasm.
"Dearest Elizabeth," the voice was then put to a face as the light glowing from the street lamp illuminated the person's face, "How long has it been since I last saw your kind smile?"
"Not long enough," Elizabeth muttered again. She was quite enthralled by the buzzy feeling she felt when she said something sardonically.
"You don't mean that, I am sure."
"I do. Believe me, I do."
"Oh, how your words rip at my heart!" Alex placed a hand on his chest to emphasise his point, "How shall I go on knowing that Elizabeth does not love me any more? How will I rise from my lonely bed in the cold light of morning without knowing I am worth of my dear Elizabeth's heart? This is the end for me! The end, I tell you!"
Alex dropped to his knees on the hard steps (and winced as he realised stone really was not a good landing surface), faking a breakdown. Melanie rolled her eyes, but with a envious scowl on her face. She grabbed the collar of hi jacket and hauled him up.
"Save your drama for later, Alexander," she hissed as she brushed imaginary dirt off his shoulders.
A puppy-dog look crept onto Alex's face, "Aw, I'm in your bad books, aren't I? You only call me Alexander when I've done something bad. Now I'm in your bad books!"
"Yes, you are."
"Does this mean I get punished?"
"Shut it."
"Ah, you're not that angry, are you? Come on, let's..." Alex trailed off as his eyes settled on Nadine sitting with a sceptical look on her face, "Well, hello there, my fair lady. And may I say what a very fair lady you are--"
Before Alexander could even begin to smile, Melanie hooked her arm in his and half dragged him down the steps, grumbling and huffing until she got to the car, where she open the drivers door, threw him in, turned round to face Elizabeth and Nadine and ran her gloved finger through her hair.
"I going to go with Alex..." she said, barley loud enough for Elizabeth and Nadine to hear, "I believe...I believe you need a little time, Elizabeth. To think over things. And I don't want to put ideas into your head...But you have my number, so you can call me whenever you like if you need anything. I will try my best to help you from now on, if you will let me. But for now, I think--no, I know it would be best for me to leave. There is a lot for you to consider before I would allow you to accept me again as your friend. And as for you, Miss Nadine, you have shown me a truth that I would never have believed if it came from the mouth of a lesser person. Without you, I could have gone on without seeing just what harm I was bringing to Elizabeth. Thank you, ma'am."
She placed a hand on the door handle and, with a courteous nod opened the door, stepped inside the car and shut the door behind her.
The car disappeared into the darkness, and Elizabeth and Nadine just had time to see a small hand wave from the car window and a pair of emerald eyes stare back at them, as full of life and happiness as Elizabeth's now were.

Nadine smiled and lifted a hand to the car that was rapidly disappearing. "That guy's a bit of a flirt, isn't he?" she chuckled. She saw the happiness in Elizabeth's eyes and her smile widened. "Come here, you," she laughed, and pulled her friend into a hug.

"Ha, yeah," Elizabeth welcomed the hug and smiled involuntarily, chuckling a little, "Though he's just showing off because you're here. He likes making Melanie jealous."
Elizabeth pulled away, glancing back to where the car to disappeared to, hoping to catch a glimpse of it even though it was long gone. She sighed and pushed her silvery hair back behind her ears, "I'm glad Melanie and I can be friends again. We used to be, you know, before Daddy died. She lived across the road from me, and we practically lived in each other's houses. After that day she...changed. She became someone I didn't recognise. The twinkle in her eyes disappeared, and the kindness in her smile shrivelled away..."
Elizabeth shook the nostalgia for her mind, and smiled warmly at Nadine, "It's cold, don't you think? That dress of yours looks awfully thin. Do you want to go back inside?"

"Yeah..." Elizabeth laughed too, but she didn't quite know what was funny...
Nothing much had changed in the ballroom. The same people sat in the same seats, having the same conversations as they were last time. Elizabeth began to look for Marissa, and saw her sitting at the side, busy doing something on her cell phone. Now, Elizabeth wasn't nosey. Oh no. But she couldn't help wondering what Marissa was doing...

Elizabeth noticed that Marissa looked slightly lonely. Not wanting to forget her kindness earlier, Elizabeth began to approach her, beckoning Nadine to follow.
As she got closer, she saw Marissa slipping her cell into a hidden pocket, smiling in a somewhat startled fashion, as if she had not been expecting to see them again.
"Hi, Miss Edgeworth," Elizabeth gave Marissa a little wave, "Are you doing okay? I saw you sitting here and thought I'd come over to say hello."
Somewhere in the back of Elizabeth's mind, she wondered if she had gotten rid of her stutter, which had accompanied her everywhere for a good portion of her life, for good...

Nadine appraised the man, studying his clothing, then his face intently. "What's your name? I haven't seen you around before."

Marissa glanced at the new-comer and quickly fixed her hair. When she was finished, she stood up and went over to him. "Hello."

"I'm Anthony Wright." He said as he looked at the other girl. "Hello."

"Anthony Wright?" Nadine said, shaking his hand politely, "As in, the son of Phoenix Wright? You've definately inherited his good looks," she laughed, to show it wasn't a serious flirt, just a friendly one.

((Mind if I join? :3))

Name: Robyn Valentine
Age: 28
Gender: Female
Apperance: Pink hair, in a side parting, down to her shoulders. Greyish/blue eyes. Around 5 feet and 4 inches in height.
Occupation: Private Investigator
Personality: Hopeless romantic, usually gets her nose into other people's business, and gets into a lot of trouble for it. Has a nack for being in life-threatening situations.

-------------------

Robyn peeked round the door, her face flushed. "This is the last time I go to a party where half the universe is invited" she mumbled to herself. Robyn didn't really do so well in large crowds. She preffered to be in a small select group. But she supposed that tonight would be an exception.
She casually walked a few steps into the room, tugging nervously as her black evening dress. Not too revealing, yet not too frumpy, it was one of her favourite garments. She opened her black handbag, which was swinging on her arm and picked out a piece of paper. It bore crude handwriting from her latest client.
"Find out as much as you can about my wife."
Pretty vague, isn't it? Robyn thought. She stuffed the note back and clasped the handbag before surveying the crowd.

"Well it's like the saying goes: Like Father Like Son." He said as he chuckled.

"You certainly do look like Nick. He looked after me a couple of times when I was a young girl."

Nadine giggled and smiled sweetly at him. "Wanna go get a drink?"

Robyn felt slightly embarassed as she looked around the crowd. So many people she didn't know...
"Gah, why can't there be at least one person I know?" she muttered to herself as she walked a little further into the fray.
