"Yes." Fred began. "It was midnight when I saw it happen. The murderer tore him up - oh the horror!" Fred said, covering his eyes.

Martha grinned smugly. "There's no way you could have seen this murder at midnight," she said.

"Why not?" Fred asked, removing his hands from his eyes. Gob remained silent. He wanted to see what he could do when Martha showed Fred the autopsy report.

"TAKE THAT!" Martha yelled forcefully, holding up the autopsy report. "Mr. Sahwit, according to the autopsy report, the victim died at 12:15 am. Fifteen minutes after you "witnessed" the murder! Care to explain?"

"Simple, the last time I saw a clock was at 12 AM." Fred smiled.

"It's easy to associate a specific time to a specific event without actually seeing another clock." Gob told Sandra.

Hmm...Is there something suspicious about that?
DUH!

"That's why I asked him if he was sure," Martha said. She had to be careful from there. One slip up, and... "The last clock you saw, where was it? Could you show me on the floor plans?"

"I didn't think to bring any floor plans, but the clock was built into the cash register." Fred told Martha. "When it was 12 o' clock, I when out through the side. When I made it around to the front to lock it up, I saw him kill the victim."

"Your Honor, I think this needs to be added to his testimony," Martha said. There were a few things she wanted to question about that.

"Why can't you cross-examine like the other lawyers?" Fred asked, annoyed that he was told to amend his testimony. "It's pretty much a given that I locked up for the night."

The Judge waited for an explanation from Martha.

"There are several things about that statement that don't add up, and some things I want you to be more specific about," Martha said. "And I think, if you add it to the testimony, it will make things clearer." And reveal a contradiction.

"Fine." Fred sighed, as he prepared to restate his testimony.

"I had one last customer before my shift was over.
Or so I thought.
The murderer came into the store looking around for something.
He didn't find what he was looking for, so he left.
Apparently my last official customer had what the murderer wanted.
So when I was leaving, I saw the murderer beat the victim until he died.
It was 12 o' clock when I locked up for the night.
On my way to lock up the store, I saw the murderer kill the victim."

Fred sighed, having said a lot of words. again. "There, happy?" Fred remarked.

"You have no idea," Martha said. Considering two parts don't fit together. Before I point that out, I might as well ask the questions I was going to.
"The murderer came into the store looking around for something."
"Hold it! Did you get a good look at the murderer? Could you describe them to me?"

"He didn't hide himself very well. He had blondish hair, a long-looking face, a goatee, and that's all I could distinguish from my distance." Fred told Martha. "I would describe his clothing that day, but that has nothing to do with the case, considering that he had to have changed clothes, with hygiene and all." Fred smiled.

"Hmm..." Martha looked at Gob Larry. He looked like how the witness described. "About how tall was he?" she asked.

"I didn't catch the height." Fred told Martha. "I saw him come in, but I was dealing with another customer. When I was done with the customer, the murderer was gone."

"Well I can't see through shelves." Fred told Martha. "It'd take Superman to see his height through them. Have you been in a convince store lately?"

"You...restrained him? Wait, it was midnight according to your testimony. I don't think you'd be able to make out his face in the dark," Martha said.

"It was outside of the store." Fred said, not considering the other hole in his testimony. "Besides, it wasn't that dark out." Fred smiled.

"But if you had just locked up the store, the lights would be off, right?" Martha asked. "And it was midnight. Unless you had cat-like vision, I would say it was really dark out."

You got him! He's sweating, trying to come up with an explanation for his testimony. However....

:objection:

"Convince stores keep their lights on, as to prevent robberies. The witness could see the defendant very easily. Assuming of course, this all happened in the front of the store." Gob told Martha, taking on the Payne's trademark pose.

"Mr. Sahwit said earlier that he went out the side door at midnight, right?" Martha asked innocently. "Why did you go out the side door? I mean, you were going to have to lock the front door anyway..." She hoped this different approach would confirm her suspicions.

"I... I.... I went to go change, yeah, that's it." Fred said, starting to sweat.

"That statement doesn't sound all that confident." The Judge began. "Are you sure that's what happened?"

"Well I..... Yeah, that's what happened." Fred put on a smile.

"That doesn't make sense. Help me out with this, will you? Are you saying you went out the side door to lock up, then went all the way around to go back and get change and that's when you witnessed the murder?" Martha asked.

"No! I went out through the side, locked up, then murdered the witness!" Fred yelled quickly, clearly nervous.

"Murdered the witness?" The Judge asked. "But you are the witness."

"What!? I did no such thing!" Fred yelled in protest.

:objection:

"Your honor, the defense tricked the witness!" Gob said to the Judge. "What he meant to say was 'witnessed the murder'; a simple Freudian slip."

"Such as?" Gob asked, challenging Martha's claim.

"Yes, why withhold such contradictions until now?" The Judge asked Martha.

"Well, why not?" Martha asked. "I wanted to see if Mr. Payne here was going to find them first and try to cover them up. First, he said on his way to lock up the store, he witnessed the murder, but he said just now that he did it while he was going back to get change. Which is it, Mr. Sahwit?" Either way, there will be something wrong with your story.

"Are you an idiot?! I changed FIRST, then I witnessed the murder!" Fred slammed the witness stand in fury. "I came here to testify! Not to be prosecuted by a incompetent attorney!"

The audience reacted with an "OOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooo......," as if Martha were in trouble.

"Really? You came here to testify? That's funny," Martha said. "All you've been doing is telling stories. Completely fictional ones at that. Now, about getting changed, then witnessing the murder...You're saying you went to get changed, which is why you went out the side door instead of the front door. Correct?"

"YES! OUT THE SIDE DOOR!" Fred banged the witness desk in fury yet again. "THEN GOING AROUND THE BUILDING TO LOCK THE FRONT!" He started shaking his fist at Martha. "IT'S ONLY FICTIONAL BECAUSE YOU INCOMPETENT BRAIN CAN'T PROCESS SIMPLE THINGS LIKE THAT!"

Gob started sniggering.

"There's no need for yelling," Martha said. "By the time you got to the front, it was 12:15am. It had to have been for you to witness the murder. But therein lies...A problem. If the defendant left the store at midnight...There's no way he could be the murderer! He presumably left to take the beer from the other guy. They were out in front of the building at midnight. What happened during the fifteen minute gap, then?"

"No! Your ring! So shiny! So big! Give it to me.... No! GAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" Fred fell backward, clearly freaked out with the stress and whatnot. As with Larry, the bailiff took him away.

"I think it's clear who murdered who." The Judge said. "I find the defendant not guilty!"

And on the bang of the gavel, the audience applauded Martha's work.

Martha bowed and went out into the lobby. The trial was finally over. And to think, all she had for evidence was the autopsy report. ((So, where do we go from here?))
