It's not just a killing game. You learn about history as well. For example, Leonardo da Vinci was born in Florence, Italy, known nationally as Firenze, Italia. He set up his workshop there until he moved it to Venice (Venezia). Leo later moved to Rome, where he began work on one of the most famous paintings of all time: The Mona Lisa.
Other than that, you can run round killing bad guys and helping the civilians of Roma. And you can do this:
*in game, stabs a Papal guard through the chest with a broom, killing him somehow*
it's a good thing games don't have to make sense.
