"It's because we let people walk all over us." Nick replied. "Girls can't respect you if you're not willing to show some spine now and then. It's a primal thing really. Woman look for strong males to ensure their offspring survive." Nick blinked and gave Mia a nervous smile. "I...uh...I watch a lot of nature shows."

Mia rolled her eyes but still gave Phoenix a half grin. " I do agree that most women don't want their boyfriend to be a carpet, but I don't think dating a a man who picks fights every night is much better. I think with people it's a bit more psychological, Phoenix. I think a lot of women think they can 'fix' their boyfriends. They date someone and then try to change them, which I don't think is really fair in some cases."

"Some guys to use some fixing." Nick chuckled at something that would only really amuse him about that statement. "But I see your point. It's usually the asshole that gets all the attention." His thoughts couldn't help but wander to Miles. "I hope he's sleeping okay. I mean, the guy gets nightmares from watching b-flick zombie slashers. I can only imagine what's running through his head right now..."

Mia sighed. "Hopefully he shouldn't be to badly off, considering they managed to get the drugs out of his system...Wait, Miles can't handle horror movies?"

"We had this sleep over once where we just binged on horror flicks. He couldn't sleep for almost a month. Since then you even mention horror and he suddenly finds something of dire importance that requires his immediate attention." Nick chuckled. "On the last night of the third summer he came back for we rented an old black and white film that he'd be into and stuck in that scene from Carrie when she gets blood dumped on her and she freaks out and kills the whole prom." He laughed. "Judging by the look on his face he was messed up for weeks after that. Mr. Edgeworth said it was hilarious."

The two laughed together for a while before Phoenix stopped.
"Oh hey, here it is." He turned and walked into a small place that looked to be hiding between two other buildings. It was empty inside except for a fat man standing behind a counter and another sitting at a nearby table with a cigarette and a newspaper.
"Scaturisca se non è il ragazzo dei capelli del punto!" Nick was greeted warmly by the fat man. "E gli è portato oggi una ragazza con! La moglie, venuta vede che la ragazza il ragazzo dei capelli del punto ha portato!" He yelled into the kitchen. A few seconds later a woman covered in flour walked out.
"Una ragazza? Realmente?" She declared before seeing the two. "L'OH e lei è così attraenti!"
"Uh..." Nick had to think a moment. "È Cirino qui?"
"Sì! Lascilo andare lo ottengono!" The woman walked back into the kitchen. Some time later a tall boy a little younger than Phoenix came out.
"Nicky!" He greeted happily and rubbed his hands onto his apron. "Who's the girl I heard my madre e padre scream about?"
"Oh, this is Mia Fey." Nick said proudly.
"È molto attraente, sì?" The fat man jabbed the boy in the ribs. "Dovreste portare le ragazze domestiche come quello."
"Padre." The boy hissed. "Just sit, I'll get you what you like." He told Nick. "Anything for the lady?"

"Two ricotta gnocchi!" He said cheerfully and went inside. Phoenix picked a seat away from the smoking man.
"They make the best gnocchi here. Even out of potatoes which no one even does anymore." He smiled. A few seconds in their seat and the woman came out with a bottle of wine, some bread, and some glasses.
"For the couple, yes?" She said in broken English as she set the things down.
"Uh, thank you." Nick replied. "I didn't even know they had wine."
"Wine special. Only for couples." She answered and poured their glasses. "You drink. Make for warm hearts." He hit her chest two times and wandered back into the kitchen.

"Ah, well, they said 'hi', then talked about how I brought a girl in and how pretty you were." He ate a chunk of his bread. "Then Mr. Trellis asked Cirino why he never brought home pretty girls." Translating was making Nick blush. "There was some other stuff, but my Italian isn't very good and they were talking too fast."

"Yeah. Larry wanted to learn it to impress his girlfriend so he had me help him study." Nick eyed the glass. He didn't want to be impolite and ask for water, but he wasn't really a fan of wine either. He sighed and ate some more bread.

Mia nodded and poured herself a half a glass of wine. She rotated the stem in her hand after she had set the glass down, unsure of what to talk about.

Phoenix cleared his throat and had to drink some wine to wash down the bread.
"Strozzapreti!" Announced Mr. Trellis as he set the food on the table. "For the happy couple, ah?" He laughed.
"Grazie, signore" Nick smiled. Ms. Trellis brought in some candles and lit them. Then the two went to the kitchen and dimmed the lights. Nick was visibly embarrassed. "Uh...wow...they go all out here, huh?" He cleared his throat again and drank some more wine.

"I wouldn't know. There usually isn't anyone else around when I've been here." Nick stabbed his dumpling with a fork and stuffed it into his mouth. He did it so forcefully that he got sauce on the side of his mouth and had to wipe it off on the cloth napkin. "I always hate it when I have to use these. I feel bad that someone has to wash them just because I was clumsy."

"Well, generally cloth napkins are a sign of a classier restaurant, so it's more about image than practicality, I think." Mia forked on of the dumplings before giving Phoenix a half smile. "Are we really discussing the value of cloth napkins?"

Nick laughed.
"Wow. I we really are." He swallowed another mouthful of food and washed it down with wine. "We're adults here, we should be able to think of something better than that." Nick jumped when the music suddenly started to play in the background. Ms. Trellis was smiling proudly in front of an old record player right before she slipped back into the kitchen. "Oh god." Nick laughed again. "It just gets more corny by the second."

Nick smiled dreamily with his chin resting against his palm. The way the candle light flickered in her eyes was sort of hypnotic.
"It is sort of nice though." He said softly and watched the flames dance inside her pupils. His free hand had stabbed into a dumpling, but he hadn't bothered to bring it to his mouth yet.

"Yeah." Nick wasn't entirely listening anymore. He realized how much of a dork he must have looked like right then, but he just couldn't seem to pull himself out of it. Mia really was pretty, and she was a successful lawyer, which really put her out of reach of a guy like him. He couldn't help be feel very lucky that she was willing to come at all.

"You like foreign flicks?" Nick asked out of the blue. His dreamy gaze faltered as he realized his food was starting to get cold. He stabbed a few extra dumplings on his fork to compensate and stuffed them into his mouth. He took another drink of wine to wash the bite down, which finished off the glass. He'd have to pour himself some more if he wanted enough liquid to finish his meal with. This would also be a good time to order some water. "Uh." He held up a finger to Ms. Trellis as she quickly approached their table. She had his glass filled in no time at all and was gone as quickly as she'd come. Nick sighed.

"Samurai, huh?" Nick replied. "Edgy's really into that stuff. The only reason he even owns a TV is to watch the shows they've been flooding the place with." He chuckled and it ended with a sort of snort. "He won't admit to it though, and he'll kill me for telling you I'm sure." He'd nearly finished his plate and his second glass of wine at this point. "I should probably slow down." He mused. "Or else Ms. Trellis will run up and refill my glass."

"Oh yeah. I've caught him watching them in his office plenty of times. He keeps a little tv in his desk drawer." Nick rolled a dumpling along in the sauce. "Well I guess 'kept' now, since it got burned up and all." He smushed the dumpling down the the back of his fork. "I wonder where he's going to set up shop now? I really doubt he's going to want to rebuild it." Nick squeezed his eyes shut. "Wow, talking about Miles isn't much better than talking about cloth napkins is it?"

"We're just out of practice." Phoenix smiled up at her. "A few more dates in and I'm sure we'll get better." He chuckled again and decided to stop teasing his dumpling and eat it. Any embarrassment he might have felt for that statement earlier was gone. It was easy to get comfortable around Mia and Nick already felt like he'd known her just as long as he had Miles or Larry.

"Melissa Parks." Nick repeated the name. "She sounds like I should know her." He poked his finger into the hot wax of the candle and let some of it drip down his finger. Then he pulled it away and pulled the hardened wax off.

Mia pinched the bridge of her nose, looking mildly irritated. "She's the woman who claims she's married to Miles and I'm really not looking forward to dealing with in cross-examination if this does go to court. I haven't had a chance to talk to her since this whole thing started, but from looks alone she'll probably have the judge around her little finger in a matter of minutes."

Nick's expression shifted from warm amusement to a cold glower.
"Sounds like a real bitch." He said darkly. Then he quickly finished the rest of his wine glass. As if summoned Ms. Trellis walked back to the table, but Nick grabbed her wrist when she started to pour him another glass. "Check." He told her. She smiled, nodded, and wandered to the counter.

"Gumshoe," Draco said into the phone in a hard and stern voice. "If you could, I would like to have a word with you in my office when you return. Understood? Good." Setting the phone down, Draco rubbed his temples and checked into his notebook. "Without a charge, we can't investigate the house. Our only option is with the office. Val and I better start on that tomorrow." He took another sip of his late, found it was cold, and chucked it into the trashcan.

"Yeah." He replied stalely. He forced a smile on his face as to not dampen the mood they'd finally managed to acquire. Ms. Trellis brought over a sticky note with numbers on it pressed onto a black square of plastic. Without really thinking Nick took it then handed her some cash. "Mantenga il supplemento." He told her. She smiled and walked off. "It's pretty bitter out there. If you want to catch a taxi home I won't be offended."
