"Walking wouldn't kill me, and I do need to go back and get my car. " Mia pulled her jacket off the back of her chair. "I left it parked outside of the hospital, so it's not too far."

(on the other side of the pancake...)

Gumshoe peeked his head around the corner to see if Draco was in his office. Seeing that he was, Gumshoe stood in the doorway and said, "You...you wanted to see me, pal?"

"Yeah, okay." Nick got up and, being the chivalrous man he was, offered Mia a hand to get out of her seat. Deserving or not he was going to do his best not to screw this up. "So what kind of movies do you like? Maybe we can catch one. That's standard dating fare, right?"

Mia took Phoenix's hand. "Well, there is a movie I've been interested in seeing for a while, "A Dozen White Roses". I don't know if you'd be interested though, it's a bit of a 'Chick Flick'..."

"Hey, I've been wanting to see that!" Nick replied when they stepped out. The wind whipped against them as they walked. "I haven't gone though because I'm paranoid that Larry might find out, but if I'm taking you then I have an excuse." He wasn't sure why he was being so bluntly honest, but he didn't really care anymore.

Mia looked at Phoenix, mildly surprised. "I would never have guessed you enjoy that kind of movie, Phoenix." She chuckled a little. "Although I can understand why you'd be paranoid about your friend knowing you watched them."

"Well I don't watch them a lot, but this one looked pretty good, and it has Kate Winslet in it. I've like most of her movies so far." Nick replied. He took Mia by the arm as they walked. He didn't mind the cold so much as long as he was holding her.

Mia walked close to Phoenix. "I have to say I haven't seen a whole lot of her movies, but she is a very good actress. This movie also has Kenneth Brannagh in it, who I also like. It's a shame he doesn't do very many movies."

"Aren't they married?" Nick wondered and watched their feet. He was mildly amused that they were setting their feet on the ground in unison. "I remember he was with Emma Thompson for a while, but it's hard to keep track of these things." The look on Mia's face made him explain. "I used to work on a news stand before Larry and I started our business. Not much to do during the day but read."

Mia nodded. "I never kept track of those sorts of things but I remember hearing something similar. An old friend of mine happened to really enjoy Shakespearean movies, so I might have heard it from her."

"Shakespeare, huh? Never could get into that. Can't understand what they're saying." Nick replied and looked up at the stars. There weren't many due to light pollution, but the ones that were burned fierce and bright.

Nick laughed.
"Guess so." The air escaped his lungs wistfully and he glanced over to see what Mia's expression was at that very moment. He was pleased to see it was a smile.
He was sort disappointed that they got to the hospital parking lot so quickly. He let go of her arm so she could get to her car. "I'm going to go check up on Edgey while I'm here." He pointed at the doors with his thumb.

Mia chuckled and put a hand lightly on Phoenix's shoulder. "Phoenix, hospital visiting hours finished shortly after we left for dinner. You'll have to come back tomorrow morning if you want to see Miles."

"They let like family and stuff sleep in the rooms, don't they?" He scratched his temple. "Well no, I guess I wouldn't count would I? Guess I'll just head home then. Maybe get some sleep." He looked over at the hospital and sighed.

"If you would, Gumshoe, have a seat," Draco replied without looking up from the report he's currently writing. When the scruffy detective seated himself, Draco continued on the report for a few seconds before sliding it away. "Gumshoe, you have to understand that I hold you with a unique form of respect for your atitude toward your job. You show a passion that inspires the young cadets to do their very best. Basically, you are a very important figure in your department." He allowed Gumshoe a few moments to relsih the praise before getting down to the reason he called him in his office. "However, that can not escuse your from your mistakes." He not leered at Gumshoe with his 'Dragon Gaze.'

"Detective, you were the one who informed me that Mrs. Edgeworth wishes to press charges against Mr. Edgeworth, am I correct." He stopped him before Gumshoe could answer. "That was a retorically question, Gumshoe. You're not suppose to answer it. Of course it was you who told me. However, I've just got done talking to the lady and she never wished to press charges. Gumshoe, this is a grave mistake." He paused for a moment, thinking about what Melissa had told him. "But it was also my responsibility as well and shall take full credit for the mistake. You may leave, but remember that your evaluation will be coming up, so I hope to have a full report on the arson incident, starting tomorrow." He waved the detective away and returned to the report.

"No. I wouldn't want to bother you. I'm pretty used to walking and it's a nice night." Nick answered while still looking at the hospital. He turned to Mia and smiled.

Gumshoe stared blankly at Draco for a moment or so before shuffling out with his shoulders slumped. He needed another pay deduction like he needed a hole in the head (although his superiors claimed already did have holes in his head).

(On the other side of the pancake...)

Mia shook her head. "It's no trouble, Phoenix. If it had been, I wouldn't have extended the offer, right?"

"Well...um...it's fifteen minutes out." He thought on this a moment. The sound of thunder answered his query. "I guess I can't walk there in the rain, huh?" He chuckled as it suddenly pelted down on top of them.

It was close to midnight by the time Draco had finished up the report. He checked in with Valerie, to tell her about the investigation tomorrow, and headed toward his car, only to find rain was pouring down hard. He grumbled to himself, realizing he left his umbrella in the car. He braved the downpour, making it to his car completely soaked. At least his notebook was okay.

He laid it down in the passenger side. His mind was still on that girl, Melissa. He had grown to trust in his instinst, and something about that girl....just didn't seem right. It could be he's come to distrust a pretty and innocent face...because of her.

He clutched at his shoulder as he remembered that day. He was able to save Valerie, but his arm was never what it used to be. He allowed the memory tio linger as he drove home for the night.

Nick got in quickly as well. He shook some of the wet from his hair which made the spikes splinter. Then he flashed Mia a smile.
"Thanks. It's a pretty straight shot. Just take 41a to exit 2 and turn left at the light." He informed her.

"Alright, that is fairly straightforward from here." Mia shook some of the remain moisture from her hair and brought the car to rumbling life. The rain pounded rather hard on the roof of the car as it pulled out of the parking lot and onto the road.

Nick searched for something to say as they rode, but decided to settle on somewhat comfortable silence. After all, forced conversation had to be worse. He watched the rain slide down the window as Mia drove. He was having a hard time keeping his mind focused on one thing at a time. It flitted from Edgeworth, to their movie conversation, to Larry in another country, to the fire, to how pretty Mia looked with wet hair.

Mia drove according to the directions Phoenix had given her. She didn't particularly like driving in weather like this, but it helped to keep her mind focused. The weather and the rumble of the car was the only noise in the silence that seemed to drape the car like a blanket.

"You think it's true?" Nick asked out of the blue. He didn't think to clarify what it was he was talking about until a few seconds of silence passed. "What happened to Edgey..." He didn't break away from his gaze out the window.

Mia's gaze never left the road, and her voice was calm and sure as she spoke, "Honestly I do. those drugs didn't end up in his system on their own, and Miles isn't the type to experiment with that sort of thing. I have a feeling that Melissa Parks has a lot of the answers to the questions surrounding the whole thing though."

"But we were both there. We saw that girl on the floor and Miles...it just...I can't get it out of my head. She looked scared out of her mind and he...he really hit her. God he beat that woman. I didn't even know he could do that!" Nick ranted. His thoughts were cutting off in the middle of sentences and jumping to the beginnings of other ones.

Mia shook her head. "Phoenix, did Miles look in his right mind when you came into that room? I was a bit later coming in than you, but even I could tell that Miles wasn't in control of himself and it got worse when I was untying him from that bed...I've never seen him like that."

"I don't know." Nick grumbled. "I think I'm trying to block it out." He ran his fingers through his damp hair making it slick down some. "The whole thing was just so surreal...I can't wrap my head around it. Then there's the whole 'Mrs. Edgeworth' business. Why would he not mention something like that? What other things has he not been telling me?" Nick's sullen face turned towards Mia. "I'm his only friend in the world and he's stopped talking to me. I hadn't even seen him for months before that party and it was Mr. Edgeworth that even invited me. I wasn't even expecting him to help out Larry when I left that message on his machine. If not for all this stuff happening I'd probably just be shut out again."

Mia took one hand off the wheel and put in on Phoenix's shoulder. "I'm pretty sure the 'Mrs. Edgeworth' deal is all in Melissa Parks' head, Phoenix. Miles practically had an apoplectic fit when he heard about it." She sighed. "I haven't known Miles as long as you have, but even I know that he doesn't move out of his office when he has cases, unless Mr. Edgeworth dragged him out. I don't think he shuts you out, so much as he doesn't move outside his little world in the office very much."

Nick sighed.
"Yeah, you're probably right. I'm just being paranoid. If you haven't noticed a lot of my friends tend to up and leave for little to no reason." He laughed a little. "I honestly don't know why I'm even letting this bother me so much. Or why I'm complaining to you. I guess I owe you a blathering paranoid confession session, huh?"

"Usually I'm an excellent listener. I just seem to be broken at the moment." He chuckled. "The exit is coming up." He pointed out. "We'll be on my road really fast." Nick made his window fog up and doodled on it with his finger. He stared at it sleepily for a moment, then something clicked. He blew some more fog onto the glass and drew more intently. The finished product was a dripping blueprint. "That's it! I'll trade out the clock parts on the thinker and put them in the tree. It'll be a bank that can tell time!" He laughed excitedly. "I might make that rent payment yet!"

Nick hastily dove to the glove box and yanked out the paper. He took the pen out of his pocket and sketched furiously.
"If I just move this...add this...take out this...HA!" He held it out proudly. "If I add an owl I won't even have to rerecord! I'll just add in some animal sounds!"

"Not sure." Nick stuffed the paper and pen into his pocket. "The apartment it coming up. You'll want to turn at the sign." He pointed. The wind picked up and whipped against the car nearly lifting it off the road on a few times. "Wow, it's getting really bad."

"Will you be okay getting home?" Nick wondered. "You can stay at the apartment if you want. I've got one of those fold-out couches." He cleared his throat. "I understand if the idea makes you uncomfortable though. I mean, I know I'm not some crazy murderer, but you don't..." He laughed. "Ah...wow...that was not the right thing to say at all..." Nick struggled to get his foot out of his mouth.
