Miles watched her leave and huffed some air through his nose. He looked down at the carpet and went back to scrubbing undisturbed. If he was going to get this place clean before Phoenix woke up he was going to have to focus.

...he wasn't acting like a child...

Mia noted wryly that this was the third time today she walked out to her car angry with Miles. It probably didn't help that her own nerves had been frayed by the experience that morning. If Miles wanted to be infantile about the whole thing, then she didn't plan on having anything to do with it.

Deciding she probably wasn't going to be able be very productive in her current state of mind, it'd be better to head back to her apartment.

He was acting like a child.
Miles grunted in mild dissatisfaction at the realization. Phoenix was asleep, and his father was hundreds of miles away, but he could still hear them reprimanding him. Well, not reprimanding so much, neither really ever just plainly said he was being rude. Phoenix would apologize and his father would give him that look.
Miles grunted again and took out his phone. He was never going to get this place clean.
"Ms. Fey?" He began when he heard the hello, but didn't wait for a response to his inquiry. "I wanted to apologize for the...display..." He said, but didn't really sound like he meant it at all. "My nerves have been worn very thin and you dancing about on them didn't exactly help bring out the best in me."

Mia didn't respond immediately. She hadn't expected an apology, even if it was an insincere one. Realizing he'd expect some sort of response, Mia responded although her tone still held a trace of surprise. "It's understandable, Miles, given what you've gone through in the past few days." She sighed. "Actually I sort of deserved it, considering I was needling you..."

"Yes, you did." Miles agreed. Then he heard Phoenix apologize for him again. "Ah..." It took a little time to think of how to take that little comment back. "But then...I was..." He growled into the phone and there was some more silence. "I did plan on taking care of things tomorrow. Once I was finished here and sure that Phoenix could function properly." He wanted so badly to hang up now, the filth in the room was glaring at him with malicious intent.

Mia didn't quite believe him, but she was tired of getting angry at him. It was better to end the conversation before they blew up at each other again. "If you say so, Miles. Look, I've got to go, but listen, I didn't mean what I said about not taking your case if this does go to trial...if you want me to, I'll still represent you, if it comes down to that."

"It shouldn't." Miles sounded like he'd just been punched in the stomach as he said that, but he regained his cold dulled tone soon enough. "Good-bye, Ms. Fey." He hung up and, now with a clear conscience, could go back to his cleaning.

"Hurgle..." Phoenix peeled one eye open and looked over at the clock by his bed. The room was fully lit with sunlight and after his vision focused he could see why. It was eight o'clock. He'd slept in. As was habit for him he sat up and started to ruffle out his hair, however most of it was being held down by bandages. "Oh...right..." He muttered as he started to recall being beaten up by a large man with a pipe. His head was still throbbing from that. His legs were a tad unsteady when he first stood up, but he managed to walk to the bathroom fairly well. He stared at his toothbrush and razor for a moment before deciding to just skip that today and take care of the more important things.
Bladder empty, Phoenix made his way towards the kitchen, which required him to walk through the living room. At first he wondered when they'd gotten a white carpet, then his eyes traveled up from his feet and around the place. It was practically sparkling. "What the-" His eyes stopped when he spotted Miles sleeping on the couch in a rather undignified position wearing his clothes and holding a spray bottle to his chest. Phoenix considered, for a moment, if he'd woke up in some sort of bizarre alternate universe. Then looked down at himself to make sure he wasn't wearing a frilly maroon suit. No...still the muddy bloody hoodie and pants from yesterday. He'd need to change those...but later. Right now he needed to eat.

Mia threw her ledger down down on her desk in mild frustration, somewhat satisfied with the dull 'thud' it made as it hit the desk. She'd spent most of the morning trying to figure out if she could pay for rent, water, etc. for both the Fey Law Offices and her apartment. She'd be able to, barely, but if business stayed like this...maybe she should consider living out of the office. It'd be cheaper at least.

The hairs in Miles' nose curled when the scent of greasy frying foods slipped into it.
"Hrrrrn." He sat up and rubbed some of the sleep from his eyes. He'd need some tea if he was going to get the sluggishness out of his head. "You always have another cup of tea." That woman's happy voice tromped through his head. Maybe he would skip the tea...
"So when did you pass out?" Phoenix asked as he flipped the bacon.
"Before the sun came up." Miles answered dully and stood.
"Are you okay?" Nick dumped the bacon into a paper towel so the grease could drain out. Two plates sat on the table with even portions of eggs and jellied toast on them. Miles noticed a cup of tea sitting next to one of them. He grunted, took it, and poured it out in the sink.
"I was going to ask you the same." Miles said as he dumped.
"Hey! I know you don't like the galloned stuff, but you could have at least dumped it more gently." Nick was referring to the splatter of tea on the fresh shirt he'd put on while the eggs were cooking. Miles walked over to the coffee pot and poured himself a cup of it. Then he searched through Nick's kitchen for anything he could use to mask the taste. "You hate my coffee." Nick sounded mildly surprised. "Are you sure you're okay?"
"I'm not the one that took a beating to the head." Miles grumbled. "Don't you ever have any cream?" He shut the fridge door with a milk jug and bottle of strawberry quick syrup in his hands.
"Sorry, I don't usually cater to grumpy old men." Nick rolled his eyes.
"Well you shouldn't have to worry about that much longer. I'll be going back home very soon so I can change out of these tasteless garments." Miles sighed and mixed his strange ingredients into the coffee. Nick huffed his own sigh and shook his head.
"I'm going to hate myself but...well if you want you can stay here a while longer. I can go by your apartment and pick up some of your stuff on my way to the post office." Nick offered.
"My apartment is no where near the post office." Miles replied.
"Yeah, I know." Nick sat down at his plate and dug in. Miles watched him for a moment.
"I should be able to fetch my own things." Miles said before having a sip of his coffee. He made a strange face with the hot liquid reached his mouth. He quickly poured it out.
"You can use Larry's room while he's not-" Nick stopped. The look on Miles' face clearly stated he was never going to enter Larry's room. "I've got a cool fold-out couch." Nick restated the offer. "It's pretty cozy. Mia slept great on it." Nick had a big gulp of grape juice.
"I need to go to my office and survey the damage." Miles declared after some awkward silence.
"Do you want me to go with you?" Nick asked. His eyes flicked down to Miles' untouched plate. The man hadn't even bothered to sit down.
"I don't need a babysitter, Phoenix." Miles said coldly.
"I never said you did." Nick glared and got up. "I have to pick up those prints." He didn't even bother to clear the table as he left. Miles watched him leave, sighed, and started to clean up.

Deciding that glaring at her ledger and mentally grumbling about her lack of clients was probably the least productive thing she could do at the moment, Mia decided a walk would keep her from going into an anger induced fit of insanity. She grabbed her coat as she strode out the door (and locked it, as the last thing she needed at this point was a robbery) and started down the street with no particular location in mind.

Nick walked with his arms wrapped together. It was cold, and in his haste he'd neglected to grab a coat. He could wave for a taxi, but he hadn't grabbed his wallet either. He's just wanted to get out of the apartment. If Miles did intend to stay it was going to take some adjusting on Nick's part...probably on Miles' too. As far as he knew the man had never lived with anyone but himself since he left his father's. This was going to be a disaster. A horrible horrible disaster.

Mia pulled her coat tightly around herself, as the wind had picked up a little way from her office. Her mind kept flitting from topic to topic, never staying on one long enough for her to form more than a wisp of an impression.

Phoenix stepped into the post office and checked is P.O. box. Sure enough there was an envelope there. He hadn't been certain if the conversation with Larry was part of a dream or not. He opened the envelope and looked the contents over. A lot of the blueprints were on napkins that he'd hastily scrawled numbers on so that Nick could read them in order. There were also some rather raunchy doodles that he could have done without seeing. There was also a picture of Larry being very happy with a girl, but Nick was pretty sure it wasn't the one he'd followed across the ocean to begin with. He sighed, tucked the envelope under his arm, and walked out into the cold again. Perhaps Miles would be gone by the time he got to the apartment.

Finally pulling out of the malestrom of her thoughts, Mia sighed and decided to head back to the office for a bit, even though it was highly unlikely she'd get a client. She made a mental note to swing by the remains of Edgeworth's office later, as maybe he would hold good to his words last night. If he didn't, Mia knew where he most likely was.

"'lo?" Nick poked his head into the apartment. Miles wasn't there. "Phew." He tossed the envelope onto the coffee table and walked into the kitchen. Miles had even washed the dishes before he left. "Well, maybe this won't be too bad." He said to himself. "I mean, he's clean. He'll keep to himself. I won't have to worry about what article of clothing on the doorknob means what and in what room." Nick smiled. "Besides, we had sleep overs all the time as kids. It'll probably be a lot like that." He flopped down on his fresh clean couch. "Hmmm, I have a meeting in a few hours." He looked at the cloth on the tv. "I'd better suit up." He got up and walked to his bedroom.

Mia was surprised at the lack of police in the remains of the office, but she figured that investigation must have been finished sometime yesterday when she was otherwise preoccupied. The burnt out office was unequivocally empty. Mia didn't know whether to feel irritated or worried that Miles wasn't present, but most likely he was still over at Phoenix's (cleaning or passed out, she didnt particularly care which). Mia quickly made her way back down to her car and headed over to Phoenix's apartment.

Phoenix only had one suit. It was a smart blue one he'd bought for prom. He wasn't sure if he should be upset or proud that he could still wear it. He couldn't find the black tie that went with it, so he settled for a faded red one he'd used with a Halloween costume one year. He wandered into the bathroom, fixed his hair as best he could with the bandage, shaved the stubble from earlier, brushed his teeth, clear his bladder, and walked to the door. Imagine his surprise when he saw Mia Fey on the other side just about to knock.
"Hi." He greeted her happily.

Mia paused a moment to take in Phoenix's attire. The suit he was wearing was a sharp contrast to his normal attire, and it surprisingly suited him quite well. She smiled. "Hello, Phoenix. I hope I didn't catch you at a bad time."

"Yeah, kind of. I was going to present those blueprints today." Nick blinked, then slapped himself on the head. "Blueprints!" He went back into the apartment to get them. "If you want to have lunch though we can. It only takes a few hours. Then I'm pretty much freed up."

"Actually I was here to see if I could catch Miles. I didn't see him at his office, even though he'd said rather explicitly he would last night. He was rather...emphatically cleaning over here for most of the night, so I figured he might have passed out on your couch or something..."

"Yeah, I noticed that." Nick had the prints tucked under his arm as he walked out. "The place looks good though. Saved me a lot of trouble...kind of disturbing actually..." He glanced back into it before closing the door and locking it. "Wait, emphatically?"

"Really?" Nick looked stunned at first, then he smiled. "Wish I hadn't missed that. Sounds hilarious." He chuckled. "Guess he missed his plants." He walked with Mia down the steps. "He said he wanted to pick up some stuff at his place last we spoke. That's probably where he is." Nick suggested. "You wanted to talk to him about anything particular? "It wasn't anything in particular, but if you wouldn't mind I'd like you to give him a call for me." Mia expression soured slightly. "We didn't part on very good terms last night, so I don't think he'd be very eager to talk to me."

"Gee, can't fathom why he might have rubbed you the wrong way." Nick rolled his eyes and got out his phone. It wasn't until they were outside he realized he forgot his coat again, but by then it was already ringing. It took him a little longer to answer it than usual.
"Yes?"
"Just checking up. You make it to your office yet?"
"I'm on my way there now."
"Okay, cool. I've got a meeting I have to do, so I won't be reachable for a few hours."
"Okay."
"Is that a football game in the background? Are you watching sports? Do you even own a tv?" Nick was getting suspicious.
"Yes, I do. No, it isn't."
"Well what is it then?"
"A movie. Are we quite finished?"
"Uh, yeah. I'll give you a ring when I'm done."
"Yes, fine, whatever."
Nick looked at his phone.
"He hung up on me." He grumbled.

Mia frowned slightly. "That doesn't sound like Miles. He can be short with people, but never outright rude. Some of what I heard of the conversation sounded a little off too." She sighed. "I hope he didn't do anything stupid..."

"I don't think Miles is capable of stupid." Nick half joked and put his phone away. "Regardless, I have to go." He waved down a taxi and opened the door. "I'll call you when the meeting's over!" He said with a big smile on his face. "Ah, do I have your number?"

Nick took it, smiled, and slipped back into the taxi.
He made sure to punch the number into his cell before he lost it. Then he informed the taxi driver of where to take him. He was a little more nervous today than usual. Perhaps it was a mixture of foreboding things in the air and having to explain a bandage wrapped head to a bunch of executives. It could also just be his headache making him nauseated. Whatever the real reason Nick was having to concentrate to not throw up in the cab. He was pretty thankful when the taxi stopped and he didn't bother to check and see how much money he threw at the man in his hasty escape.
"Ergh, okay. I think I'm gonna walk back." He muttered when weaved onto the sidewalk. Once he got his bearings back he was fine and he managed to walk into the building standing tall.

An hour later he exited the building looking pretty proud of himself. He dialed Mia to tell her the good news.
"Guess what? I just got a royalty contract!" He informed her happily when she answered. Then he realized she might not know what that is. "We'll be getting ten percent of all profits for the bank! If these things sell well I won't have to worry about rent for a while!"

Mia smiled at Phoenix's enthusiasm. At least one of them was going to be able to pay rent next month... "That's great, Phoenix. I'm glad those designs went over well." She paused for a beat. "You still up for lunch?"

"Yeah. I'm at fifth and main right now. There's a neat little place here called Skippy's. You think you can make it over?" Nick was walking in front of the diner as he spoke. "It's one of those old fashioned fifties joints. Very retro. The shakes are great because they use home made ice cream."

"You want me to order for you while I'm here? That way it can be ready for you." Nick always asked Larry the same when the two were meeting for food, so it was more out of habit than consideration that he was asking Mia. His mind wandered to Larry as she answered. He'd need to sort out those blueprints and probably get a prototype started before the end of the month. He couldn't rely on the royalties, after all.

"No, that's okay, I shouldn't be too long getting over there. Thanks for offering though." Mia tossed her jacket over one should and fumbled with the keys to the office in the other. "I just locked up so I'll see you when I get over there."

"Looking forward to it." Nick said in the most chipper tone he could muster. He really was looking forward to lunch, but without the effort he wouldn't have sounded it after reigning in his wandering mind. After brief byes he snapped the phone shut and looked at it for a while. He was considering whether or not he should check up on Miles. He'd told him he would call after the meeting, but he'd sounded sort of busy and Nick wasn't sure if he should really bother him again this soon. Surely Edgeworth would call him if something went wrong...no, he wouldn't... Nick sighed and dialed. It took a few more rings than usual for Miles to answer, and before he did there was a large clacking sound like he'd dropped the phone.
"Yes?" He said tartly.
"Just checking in." Nick offered sheepishly.
"Uh huh." It was pretty evident Miles wasn't even listening. Nick heard some clinking and rather loud chatter on Miles' end.
"Hey, are you having lunch? Mia and I were just about to get some too. Where are you, maybe we can meet you there?" Nick asked. There was a long pause. "Miles?"
"Ah, don't bother. I'm done." He replied.
"Oh, well, uh, okay..." Nick didn't like the way Miles sounded. "Well maybe could-"
"I have to go." Miles said sharply and hung up again. Nick glared at the phone when he pulled it away from his ear.
"Damnit, Miles. What the hell are you up to?" He asked somewhat grumpily.

Mia actually arrived earlier than she'd predicted (about 10 minutes), as traffic was shockingly good. She smiled as she walked up, before noticing the somewhat irritated expression on Phoenix's face. "Hey, what's the matter?"

"I'm not sure..." And Nick sounded it too. "But I think Miles has gone and done something stupid..." The moment of mild confusion slipped easily into frustration at the entire situation. "I'm sorry, but I have to find him." He couldn't even look Mia in the eyes as he said that. "Um...I'll pay you for the gas you wasted getting over here." He said to the street sign they were standing next to.

Mia put a hand on his shoulder. "I'll come with you. If Miles has done something stupid then it's probably going to take more than just one of us to make him see sense."

"You just managed to get out of this." Nick sighed and muttered to his feet. "I don't want you to feel like you have to jump right back in because you think you might owe me something because of-" He pointed to his bandaged head. "Besides, you don't even like Miles...not that I can blame you. If I hadn't known him my whole life I probably wouldn't like him either." He still couldn't look Mia in the eyes, because he knew if he did he'd probably cave. "I'm sure he's fine and I'm just being paranoid." He forced a smile onto his face and decided to look at her nose to give the illusion he was looking at her eyes. "He's probably back at the office, or back at the apartment, or-" Nick's phone rang. He gave Mia an apologetic smile and answered it. "Miles! Speak of the dev-...I'm sorry, who are you and why do you have my friend's phone?" As the man answered Nick's face debated if it should turn white or red. "Th-thank you, sir. I'll, uh, I'll be right there..." He hung up the phone and stared at it in disbelief for a while. "W-well." He looked up at Mia. "The good news is Miles is just up the road...the...uh...the bad is that he seems to have dropped his phone on his way out back to, erm, teach some tough guys a lesson..." Nick was having a hard time believing a single word coming out of his mouth. Then he laughed. "Funny thing is, I walked by the Guinness Pub on my way up here. If I'd've looked in I probably would have seen him."

Mia's eyebrows shot up. "He's in a pub? That's the last place I would expect him to be...We might want to get over there quickly if he's picking a fight though, because the last thing he needs right now is another stay at the hospital." She paused and laughed. "Probably more for our sakes than his."
