"Dammit. This... has gone too far. I just need to... GAAAAHHH!!! Who am I kidding...? I'm in way too deep..."

She slammed her head against the wall, cursing. After a long pause, she tried to diffuse the situation.

"I... I injected him with morphine. Not enough to do any real damage, but he'll be out cold for a while. The paramedics will be here soon... I'll just tell them that there have been multiple casualties."

Blood soaked her sleeve, dripping from a cut she didn't remember.

Everything was black to Violet. But she could hear the noises around her loudly. Her senses had lowered but her hearing had grown substantially. She could here quiet sobbing, and silence. The beating of her own heart and the shallow breaths of the people around her.

Why it seemed to fade around her, she didn't know. Perhaps it was a pleasant side effect of being dark and closed off on a day-to-day basis; it meant that truly awful things just seemed ordinary.

It's about 9:20. Friday night. A party scene. Your local mall, bustling with people your age, some older. You're in a huge department store, window-shopping, mingling with the crowd.

Taking the occasional sip of diet soda, you enter a large hallway which, unlike some of the other rooms, isn't jam-packed with teens. A handful of stragglers wander through the tiled corridor.

A high school-age boy strides past you. He stomps up to another guy his age, smiles, laughs at a joke out of your earshot. Swings back his hand and gives his buddy one of the biggest high-fives you've ever seen. The sound of skin slapping skin echoes.

A white box, unnoticed by most, sits quietly in a corner. It's big - it's longer than you're arms spread-eagle, and touches the ceiling snugly - and flat, only an inch or two sticking out from the wall. The only marking on the panel-like thing is an insignia of a company, a little target reticule embossed in the thing's white paint. A security system, complete with a camera that pans back and forth rhythmically.

A second after the high-five, the security system starts blasting a warning through its (apparently hidden) speakers. A buzzer rings almost simultaneously.

"STOP!!! DISORDERLY CONDUCT WILL NOT BE TOLERATED! IF YOU DO NOT COMPLY WITH THESE ORDERS, A REPRIMAND WILL BE ISSUED." The message repeats once, then only the siren is left.

The high-schoolers sneer at the security system. They curse and make rude gestures. The older boy even throws an empty can of something at it. Suddenly, a red dot appears on the elder's forehead, like someone was pointing a laser-pointer at him. He's surprised. You hear a loud "BEEP".

You blink, and your eyes open to a disturbing sight. Blood. On the floor. On your shirt. All over the walls. Everywhere. You stare at the reddish fluid, trying not to be sick, and look around to see where it came from. Your eyes rest on the boy who threw a can at the computer. Well, what remains of him. He's a goner, apparently dead from a gaping wound in his head. You can't bring yourself to stare down the hole in this guy's skull, but you see a bullet hole going into a tile near his body. He was shot, you realize.

The corpse's friend, the one who high-fived him, is screaming and running for his life. He has made it a few yards down the hallway. In moments, the red dot appears on the back of his neck, and again, you hear that cryptic "BEEP". A flash of red as he falls, crying out in agony, then suddenly silenced. The security system's camera, once focused on the boys, now stares straight at you.
