Only around 40% of the volume of that transparent tumbler is occupied by a clear liquid.

Well, it it were 50/50, then in this case I'd say it'd be half empty. At least I can't see any indication of it being filled at the moment.

If glass is in the process of being filled --> glass is half full
If glass is in the process of being emptied --> glass is half empty
If glass just stands somewhere lonely and forgotten, with nothing happening to the liquid within, it is probably half empty (= someone was in the process of drinking from it, but left).
If glass just materializes out of thin air somehow with liquid already in it, it's half full. Clearly the materializer failed to fill it completely.

Curse your optimism test!

I was thinking this was an attempt to revive the old riddle thread we had here!

hmm...wouldnt it be 100% full? half of it has water in it and air occupies the other :redd:
(you only asked if it was half filled or half empty but you never asked if the glass was half full/empty with water or half full/empty with air thus i can only conclude both must occupy the glass's space.) :godot:

You are assuming that the space that the glass is in isn't a vacuum.

If we consider the question being "is the glass half full or half empty of water" then my answer is both at the same time.

In the language I speak as my mother tongue, we can just say "Lasi on puolillaan", the word "puolillaan" meaning half of the glass is occupied by a substance. That effectively means that I can use a word that does not say either "half full" or "half empty" because the latter word is unneeded.

So thus, the glass is puolillaan. Good luck figuring out what that makes of me.

50% of the glass' space is occupied by liquid. So there's no need to say its half full or half empty

You could also argue that 50% of the glass is 100% full.
