"Dear me...I don't believe this tale is especially appropriate for a family event..." Wyn mutters, showing slight discomfort in Basil's embrace. "Maybe we can do something a bit more light-hearted, next.."

Basil felt an indescribable urge to lynch Mickey in the manner of the story, like he had committed some unspeakable crime before nodding in agreement with Wyn and releasing her "You're right Wyn, it's definitely not a tale for kids...we probably shouldn't have let Allister or Lucine listen to all that." he muttered giving them an uneasy look before putting the book back on the table.

"Well...maybe we should actually take a read of the will now that we've read this book as (presumably) Mum asked us to." he said looking around for Archer or Bertram. "It seemed like that became a whole mess in the story." he playfully winked at James, currently an upstanding citizen, "Wouldn't want you getting any ideas after all eh cousin?"

“It’s funny. I haven’t been here in years, neither has Uncle Maurice or Cuz’n Vincent. Yet we’re all in this story. Even people I’d expect to be in it like Anton and Alice are absent. The only characters in the story are the people here today...” He ominously smiled.

“The world is never as simple as we hope it to be, and there’s much more going on than we could ever observe. Our gathering here today must be fate. It was prewritten, and Meemah could read the pages. Whether any of us are witches, that remains to be seen.”

"My god will you ever stop blabberin about fate cause if you're gonna keep it up the least you could do is pull out a crystal ball and tell our fortunes." Twilip casually shouts across the room.

Jacqueline knew that the girl's words were suppose to come across as irritation, but she couldn't help but let out a small laugh. She thought it was quite funny. It was good to see the good in the bad, you could say! She put a hand over her lips, realizing she had laughed and tried to silence herself. "P-Pardon me . . !" She let out another laugh, muffling it completely with her hands.

Robin returned along with Bertram, pressing her mouth into a line rather than commenting on the fictional will. It didn't make sense, but that was precisely why it sounded like something Gloria would do.

The room she returned to was a bit more tense, and it smelled a lot worse.

Oh dear.

Zach looked busy, so Robin made her way to a vacant seat near Basil and Wyn instead. For some reason, she got the distinct impression that she ought to talk with these two in particular. She cleared her throat. "Um - I'm sorry I haven't given you a proper greeting, Wyn. It's good to see you." She offered the couple an awkward smile. "How are you both?"

Bertram returned alongside Robin, wrinkling his nose and looking irritated.

"I see we're all still in order, then. Now that we've dealt with that story business, I think it's high time I read mother's will. It is my duty as eldest, after all."

He retrieved the envelope, opened it and read its contents aloud. It was exactly as the story had described; Bertram's voice clearly lost its bluster as he moved through it and recognised the contents word-for-word. By the end, he dropped it onto the table in resignation, leaving it for anyone else to see if they wanted. "So it's true, then... I suppose this is what mother meant when she told me she'd changed the family finances. All over some 'witches' and their 'curse'? Preposterous! Yet I don't want to go against her wishes..."

"There's more like that book around?" Violet asks, curious. "It'd be really weird if there were, though. What if the rune book in the story was also around here?"

"I... I don't understand," said Robin, whose eyes were darting around the room. "If Gloria didn't want her children to have the money, why would I stand to inherit anything? I'm married to one of them!"

She had a strong case of déjà vu. Robin felt like she had said exactly this before, but she couldn't remember when or where. Perhaps she had just been dreaming.

James took a quick glance at the will, "I think it is a bit too late for me to kill off the inheritors so if I were to poison people... it would only be against potential witches. I think if that story was real, I probably would've poisoned Twilip at the end. Now that the inheritance is out of the question, I guess I need to start writing out my business plan."

Basil sighed "Well congratulations Robin." he finished his drink "I hope you make the most of it." he said patting her on the shoulder before dejectedly shuffling away to his kids.

"Actually, Violet that book did exist. I remember seeing it in the library when I was a kid. You know your Grandma was well into her mysticism, so much she'd bet the family inheritance on it apparently." he muttered before shaking his head "Seems like she drew on a lot of real-world inspirations for her story, you could probably go and find that book there if you wanted." he stroked his moustache in a most thoughtful manner "...I'd actually not mind a look myself, maybe we could find out what the crossed cane symbols mean..."

"The will was real too?!" Maurice seemed outraged. "I suppose it wasn't that out of nowhere since Mother did write that whole rubbish about us dying... Still, did she really give it to... them?!" He gave an incredulous stare. "To think she could forsake her own children over such a petty trifle... What on earth was wrong with her?" He huffed.

"Hey now! I'm not happy about it either Maurice, but that's not fair." He gestured to Robin "I mean, we should be due something of course, but from the sounds of it, Mum dearly appreciated Robin's company up here on the island. She's earned her claim of the wealth for sure." He looked over at Billy and Vincent "It's the other two that really baffle me...no offence, Vincent but you must be a bit surprised by this too right?" he shrugged.

"Basil, wait," Robin said feebly, but he didn't seem to hear her. She looked down at her lap for a moment.

She flushed and stammered, "But - she already gave me a home! I don't - I didn't earn anything!"

Robin tried to find Zach in the room, to see how he was reacting to all of this.

"What would I even do with it...?"

Violet goes over to the family library and goes over to a shelf near the bottom, and takes a book from the far corner. It's well-read, but also in a relatively secluded spot.

The little tome is filled with the runes and magics which were described in the story, and they trigger distant memories immediately upon seeing them.

"Perhaps mother was senile..." Bertram muttered, before shaking his head in frustration. "No, she was as sharp as ever. She must have had a good reason for it..." His shock over the will was conflicting with his adoration of Gloria, leaving him a sad mess. He didn't pay much attention to what was going on around him.

"What is so baffling, Bazel?" Uncle Billy asked, "You all born into wealth already. Auntie Frank and I have to work hard every day just to keep selves fed! If any real member of Moonview family deserve wealth, it me! I don't know Vinny situation, but since he go be musician and make bunch of babies, I think it similar for him. Were not for this curse nonsense, Gloria'd be most generous rich person I've ever met!"

"Personally, I don't really need money, but I not say no to such friendly offer," he added with a smug grin. "Guess I should have had more faith in President Raygun's tinkle-down money plan. It seem to work out fine for me!"

Billy let out a gleeful laugh.

Violet returns to the rest after a while. Specifically, she walks over to her dad and nudges him, showing him an open page. "Is this the book you were talking about? It definitely looks witchy."

"I'm already entirely self-sufficient off of the money my company makes. If mother really wanted to tell me some nonsense like that, she'd have said it straight to my face," Bertram said, harrumphing. "She left James out, which implies some method in the madness... but then she left money for Robin despite her being married to Zachary, who was supposed to be excluded! It's all just so... confounding!"

“Self-sufficient!” ‘Mickey’ guffawed in an over the top way. “Please! You wouldn’t be anything if you never had her money to start with! I’d love to see you actually struggling for something. Even a day of that would be traumatic for you.”

James shook his head, "You guys are just commies. The problem I have with you plebs is that every time you see a successful entrepreneur like me and Bertie you get jealous and want to steal our wealth through silly things like taxation. It's not my fault you're poor."

He shook his head and headed over to Violet and Basil.

"A book, hmm? What is it about?"

Basil rolled his eyes at the financial bickering. While it's true, he'd built his company on Moonview money, it took a lot of work to maintain it and Basil had started on the bottom making parts himself just to get his business going. Instead of getting involved he was saved by his daughter's diligent detective work.

"Hmm you found the book Violet? Well let's see." he picked up the unfortunate tale of the Moonviews from the table and flipped to the last page. "Let's see what this last symbol with the canes means according to this..." he said trying to match the illustration with the ones in the Rune Book.

Basil finds the symbol with the canes in the book. It's the absolute death circle. It always takes at least one life, even if the target would otherwise have methods to avoid it. It can be used to take more than one life under special circumstances.

"Still, James, if you're going to go around acting like a 'successful entrepreneur' then I want to see results! Or are you all talk? People like that wouldn't last a week under my employ, let me tell you."

Basil nodded his head "Yeah, your Grandma would tell us plenty of stories about witchcraft when she was younger. She said she Moonviews have lived on this land since they first came to America, though apparently it wasn't always an island. She reckons witchcraft made the lake." he chuckled looking over his daughter's shoulder "So we apparently descended from a long line of Witchhunters, and the library and mansion was here before even Grandma Gloria." he looked at the state of the book "This one is so old it might have been penned by one of those original Witchhunters perhaps." he speculated "Feel free to take it with you, should be a nice souvenir from your Grandma." he said beaming to see Violet this happy.

Vincent was surprised when it was revealed that the will was real and that he'll be getting his share of the family fortune. And then when it came to questioning Gloria's decision regarding the Moonview family fortune... Vincent went over to the table where the will was. He then picks it up and read it over.

"Hmmm..." Vincent ponders over the will, trying to understand Gloria's decision... "What if... Auntie Gloria chose us three because... we possess something special? Something special that holds dear to her? Or... maybe reminds her of herself?

Look at what she addressed the three inheritors by.... She addressed me as the most adventurous... She addressed Robin as the most pure of heart... And as for Billy's special something.... I admit that my guess is as good as yours. I do not know what something special Billy could possesses." The musician shrug his shoulders. "If only... there was a way to figure out what was going through Gloria's mind when she wrote the will."

"I didn't understand you then, and I still don't understand you now, Mama . . . " Zachary muttered as the will was 'repeated' as it was from the story. "So weird that the author of that book knew how I'd react to the reading of the will; exactly how I feel now, though . . . less strongly, because my dear Robin is still here."

And then James had to run his mouth, and Zachary started having 'flashbacks' to the story. He had to distract himself, so what better way than moving over to where the book of witchcraft was? Obviously. Great choice, mate. As he read the description of the spell that had been his downfall in the story, he could think only of what his mangled corpse must've looked like. Nope, bad idea. Time to escape to the safety of Robin's warm embrace. And so he searched for her, made his way over to her, and buried his face into her shoulder, choking up as he was doing his best to stop himself from sobbing.
Thank you for reading. I hope you have a wonderful day.

"Runes and witchcraft, hmm? Like in that book? I see..."

Asher nodded and looked a bit more closely at the book, his gray eyes lit up with curiosity. He examined the symbol found in the book and raised a brow. He scowled a bit at the mention of the lake, but his attention turned back to the book in record time.

"Huh... According to this, you can't escape this even if you have methods to avoid other magic circles, kind of like Uncle Bertie in that story..." Asher commented, looking quite intrigued as well.

And so he searched for her, made his way over to her, and buried his face into her shoulder, choking up as he was doing his best to stop himself from sobbing.

The moment that Robin spotted him, she stood, relieved. She felt like she really needed a steadying presence right now. But his face... something was wrong.

And then he reached her. Without having to think, she wrapped him up in an embrace--

Robin helplessly reaches toward the floor, an instinct to comfort him that she cannot fulfill.

--a memory she couldn't explain, impossible yet too vivid not to be real, overwhelmed her. Tears welled up in her eyes without warning. She squeezed her eyes shut to try to drive them away, but it only caused a few to escape. She turned her head to conceal her face against his hair.

"It's okay," she whispered, rubbing his back a little. "It's going to be okay."

James shook his head, "You guys are just commies. The problem I have with you plebs is that every time you see a successful entrepreneur like me and Bertie you get jealous and want to steal our wealth through silly things like taxation. It's not my fault you're poor."

Something in Jacqueline snapped like a thick twig, sending every single nerve in her body in a sudden flare of fury. Even that bright beaming smile that seems to always grace her dark red lips cracked into a sickening frown. Her eyes were narrowed in such disdain that it almost made her look like a different person. She was furious. The hands clasping her tea cup clenched around the glass before she abruptly slammed it down on a nearby table. She stood up to her feet from where she sat before piercing her gaze right through James, almost as if she were looking through him. Like he was a translucent ghost. Nothing but a mere gust of air that had no real value. She was pissed.

"I think that is QUITE enough from you." She spoke loudly in a very dark tone, clenching her hands into fists. "To think that someone like you was even invited in this house hold. To even FATHOM the fact that your load of BULLSHITERY has been dealt with for this god damn long!! Your disgusting behavior to the people I care for- to MY FAMILY makes me sick! You're absolutely, utterly, unbelievably, SICKENING!!!!!!!!!!!"

She began to walk closer to him, throwing her hand to gesture towards Zachary and Robin. "THEY ARE HAVING SUCH A HARD TIME. EVERYONE IS. WE'RE TRYING TO FIGURE THINGS OUT. AND YOU KEEP SPREADING YOUR RUBBISH LIKE A DISEASE IN THE WIND. HOW DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL, EH, LOVE? HOW DOES ALL OF THAT HATE AND DISGUST FLYING OUT OF YOUR TRAP MAKE YOU FEEL AS A PERSON!? WHAT IS YOUR MOTIVE? YOU PLAN TO JUST MAKE THINGS HARDER AND HARDER AND HARDER UNTIL EVERYONE'S DEAD LIKE IN THAT STORY. HM? WHAT IS IT. WHAT IS IT!?!?!?"

She finally made her way up to him and swiftly whipped her hand across his cheek before stepping back. "I think we could use a bit of silence from you . . . darling."
*coughs awkwardly*

‘Mickey’ blinked at the sudden outburst from his mother. He’d been on the wrong end of them before so he decided to just not address her for now.

“Not for nothing, James. But I’d invest the rest of my money in your... enterprise? If I had it on me.”
