"Well now I want to know what I'm missing even more!" Ghost wailed. "Especially if people are going to start accusing me of not even being human! But with this suit in the way I wouldn't be able to put that headset on anyway..."

Making a few gestures to calm themselves down, Ghost continued, "Still, Midge is right about one thing, we should check out those keyholes. They probably have something to do with the vaccines, which take priority right now."

Bradley frowned clearly not quite understanding the level of data-jargon going on in the room right now but he smacked Ghost in the arm anyway "Don't be stupid Ghost! Of course you are human. He squeezed the arm somewhat "We can feel someone in there, you gotta be human to think and speak like that! So you're human! It's as simple as that." he scolded Ghost.

He gave the odd-headset another look "It looks cruel and painful anyway, someone should destroy it in case they try and use it as a weapon." he said with a sideways glance at Albert. "Mr Albert...why did you attack Mr Teddy?"

After some time lounging around, looking at other rooms, and getting to know each other, they decided to head to the trial. Albert was practically carried, leaning on Ghost the whole time.

“THE ACHIEVER…” Ghost mumbled.

“So, it’s Helios’, right?” Violet blinked. “I mean, the Constitution and everything.”

“It’s mine.” Teddy answered.

“Huh? Really?” Ghost seemed confused. “How do you know?”

“You guys ever heard of the enneagram?”

“Ah, right.” Emma nodded. “The 9 personality types. Very observant.”

“Well, it just so happens that The Achiever and The Loyalist are two of those types.”

“Can’t it just be that it’s a coincidence?” Bradley asked, picking at his nose.

“Nope. Because those types are also numbered.”

“3 and 6.”

“Bingo, champ.”

Bradley smiled. “Wow, Mr. Bianchi! I’ve never heard of this! What type am I?!”

“Fuck if I know. It’s all bullshit like those horoscopes and whatever. I just remembered it after seeing the names, that’s all. Anyway, Achiever is me.”

“Well then excuse me, Mr. Bianchi.” Helios smiled. “The floor is all yours if you want to explain your achievements as uh...what was it? ‘Chief Regional Health Insurance Salesman’?”

“Especially more than an elected Senator, who’s running for President before he’s even 40?” Adriana added.

“It’s not achievements.” Teddy growled. “It’s personality.”

“This is so stupid.” Violet groaned. “Just let him start the trial, Teddy!”

“Fine. Whatever.” Teddy said. “Go ahead, let’s see if it even works.”

Helios shot one last look at Teddy and then went behind the desk. He inserted the ‘3’ key and turned it.

Spoiler: The Achiever
Hello. Helios. Welcome to your trial.”

Everybody’s bracelets besides Helios suddenly beeped.

“Everybody except Helios please proceed to the hospital room. Helios, you must stay behind to make the executive decisions.”

“Executive decisions?” Teddy looked at Helios. “Him?”

Albert seemed sick as a dog, but just sagged over when he heard the news. “We’re doomed.”

“Everybody will die if they don’t listen.” Null added.

“What choice do we have?” Ghost asked. “I want to believe there’s an alternative, but we can’t doubt that Null is serious.”

“It’s best to just go.” Helios agreed, though his face seemed a bit overwhelmed. “I promise...I’ll do the best I can.”

Everybody except Helios filed out. Midge immediately ran back in as she stepped out, grabbing a flag.

“Midge. Proceed to the exit or everyone will die.”

Midge spit in frustration and ripped the flag off, taking it to the exit with her.

Soon, everyone except Helios was in the hospital.

“Helios.” Null instructed. “The computer should be giving you a live feed. Do you see it?”

“Yes.”

“Tell them to go inside.”

“Everyone…” Helios swallowed. “Go inside the freezer.”

They all sighed, trepidation going across everyone’s faces.

“This isn’t good.” Ghost advised. “This is a medical freezer.”

“We don’t have a choice.” Teddy looked at the ground.

“Ghost is right.” Emma nodded. “These freezers can be set to temperatures that aren’t achieved naturally. There’s no telling how cold it could be.”

“We. Don’t. Have. A. Choice.” Teddy repeated. Then he turned to Midge, holding the flag. “Did you know about this?”

“I had a hunch….I would’ve grabbed more if I could.”

“I’ll be as fast as I can!” Helios encouraged, shouting over the loudspeaker.

The freezer door unlocked automatically. One by one, everyone stepped inside.

….it was abnormally cold. The kind of cold the mind couldn’t ignore, no matter how much you wanted to. The kind of cold you wouldn’t dare venture into, even with a jacket.

The door locked.

"Everyone, huddle together!" Ghost said, opening their arms. "A-and we should keep the kids in the middle, they'll be feeling the cold worst." Despite wearing a hazmat suit, even Ghost seemed affected by the cold, their outstretched arms starting to shake.

[Also Helios can hear and see you guys, as well as talk to you. You guys can’t see him though, but you can see the camera.

It will be extremely pointless (and stupid) to take off any clothes to make someone warmer, since nobody’s wearing a jacket.

The group in the freezer heard Helios's voice, attempting to sound confident despite a hint of uncertainty.

"Uhh...not sure yet. I haven't seen or heard a thing. I'll fill you all in as soon as I figure this out, though!"

"Helios, open the drawer in front of you." Null instructed.

Shakily, Helios grabbed the drawer that was previously locked and pulled it open. "You will see THREE syringes. ONE of them is an adult vaccine. ONE of them is a child vaccine. ONE of them is fake, and will do nothing."

"It is up to you to determine who will get the vaccines. In THIRTY minutes, I will give you a clue regarding which vaccines are which. You are free to make the decision before that time however."

Null took a tempered pause.

"Instead of waiting THIRTY minutes, you can also pass ONE of the laws on your right."

"U-Ummm..." Helios said, "Well...One of them says that if Adriana is thrown in the backdoor of the freezer, we'll get the clue within thirty minutes... The other is the same, but with Emma..."

"The back room... if someone's thrown in, i-it'll kill them."

"But I have to sign the law for it to work...and if they got, say, sh-shot instead of going in it wouldn't count. We can't do both either...not that I'd consider it."

"What?" Ghost exclaimed, grip immediately tightening around whoever was nearby. "That's horrible! We can't do that."

"L-look, just a thought, but, there's another option we can take here," Ghost continued, speaking up a little to ensure Helios could hear. "If we can't determine which vaccine is which, we can split the three vaccines between two adults and guarantee a 100% cure for them both. If you think about it, because one of the vaccines is a fake, there's only two real ones anyway, so the most we can cure is two people. We can't help a child with this method, but we can guarantee two adults receive the full two doses between them. Just give them both 50% of each vial. They'll get 50% adult, 50% child and 50% nothing, totalling 100% vaccine."

Adriana took a hard gulp and looked at Emma, and then at the back door of the freezer.

She turned towards whatever camera she could see and nodded towards it.

"I trust you, Helios." she said as clearly as she could, before silently shivering.

"You're doing great, Helios, keep it up," Midge says blankly. She rubs her hands on her face a little.

"If someone wants to take the flag they can. I've had it my fair share. Not like I could do anything if you all decided to kill me for it anyway. Be sure to cover your ears from the cold everyone."

Emma's eyes widened at Helios explaining the laws, but she seemed to calm down quickly.

"Yes, G-Ghost's plan would work." She said, nodding in agreement. "I'm not sure we actually have any other choice now, besides waiting the 30 minutes...which not all of us can afford." She added, glancing momentarily at Albert.

"Hmm..." Helios mumbled, just loud enough for everyone to hear. "Ghost's idea seems good, assuming that's allowed. Though this also may be one of our best chances to cure a child...but still that's a huge risk."

"Well, this is a vaccine, so I'd like to hear other thoughts before I decide anything!"

"Hey!" Violet shouted at Ghost. "I need a vaccine more than you guys, and so does Bradley! Even if we get one adult vaccine that's better than nothing!

"And I'll take a turn with the flag." She reached out for it, her whole body shaking from the cold. Her outfit certainly did more harm than good in their current situation.

"I'm actually fine with using all the vaccines on the kids if we can. Like Violet said, those guys need a lot of vaccines to be saved, so I don't want to waste a drop on someone else, even if it's safer," Midge hands the flag over to Violet.

"Anyway, it's on you, Captain America."

“...Think about this realistically,” Teddy said grimly. “Our vaccines are limited—these might be the only ones we get. Fact is, it seems like most of us aren’t gonna make it. And as fucked up as this situation is, there isn’t much reason to save someone from the freezer if the Blight is gonna get them anyway.

“...I’d be fine giving it to the kids too, but they’d only get a 75% dose. If we had one more adult vaccine...”

"I-it's only a last resort!" Ghost yelped at Violet's outburst. "Without any clues the only other option is leaving it to chance, a-and that way we might only end up with one person cured, due to an adult vaccine being 'wasted' if you or Bradley got it. N-not that it's a waste if you feel better, but it's no good if we don't get any more vaccines after this..."

"Um... if, if we'd like another option, then, we can instead focus on curing the children like Midge said. If Violet tries a vial, if she feel better we know it was a vaccine, if not it was the fake. If Violet feels better Bradley gets the other two, otherwise we give one to Violet and the other to Bradley. This way one of them gets 50% cured and the other fully cured, guaranteed, though it's a coin flip which is which. Then we hope to find at least one more vaccine before the 9 hours are up... Oh, but, I suppose the one who got the adult vaccine would be able to carry on longer than that, and me and the cured kid would be there too, which might give us a bit more of a chance to find a vaccine for them."

"Helios, 2040, you heard it here first, hehe," Midge gives a pained smile. "I don't want the adults to have any part of the vaccines until one of the kids is cured, though, especially like you guys said, these might be the only vaccines."

Suddenly Midge goes into a coughing fit that devolves into laughter.

"Bring it on, Null."

"That's right. You have to choose who gets the vaccines all at once. Though once somebody is given a vaccine they don't have to use it and can give it away." Null confirmed.

"Obviously it'd be best to give the child vaccine to one of the kids," Emma agreed. "but we can't risk doing Ghost's second plan when we could save 2 people for sure. And partially curing someone ultimately wouldn't help much, if we can't find more vaccines or get outside help soon enough." She added grimly.

She shivered heavily, then continued talking. "We should probably go with the original plan. The other options we have aren't worth the risk, unless there's something I'm missing."

Adriana looked at her fingertips, which were losing their color and turning a pale bluish pink.

"Th... the problem with trying to o...optimize like this is that we don't know how many other vaccines we'll find, or whether if we partially cure Bradley or Violet whether they'll be able to find help in time-- in other words, it's just not p...possible to do a proper cost-benefit analysis to assess the right course of action..." she said, trying as best she could to keep her voice steady between shivers.

"So... if you're taking advice, I say we partially cure the kids and bet on their survival." she said. "Hopefully we find some other vaccines to cure some of the rest of us, but we can't count on that."

She shook her head, trying to clear it.

"The... the only other thing I can even think of is that maybe that article (and Albert) isn't complete drivel, and that Hodges' headset-slash-torture-device contains one of our memories, and that the right person putting it on will cause them to remember something they didn't already know before."

"Any of us should be able to take memories in if we need to. The concern though is that we could get brain malware if we let Null write to our minds in any capacity. Also I'm not sure if that's how that particular device works," Midge says, swinging her arms in place.

"As for the vaccines, I'm fine with waiting for the first clue, and hopefully any information should be enough to guarantee that one of the kids will get the child vaccine."

"Other people might die though, so be careful."

“T-this is…fucked up on so many levels…”, Albert manages to get through his chattering teeth, heavily leaning on Ghost. “I-I’m already gonna die anyway…b-but please. Don’t let it be here…freezing to death is a painful w-w-way to go…”

The group, huddling together, tried their best to wait it out.

15 minutes passed...

"Albert...? Albert!" Ghost repeatedly shook his body, but got no response.

"He's dead." Teddy said, bluntly. He was looking at the other occupants with increasing wariness.

"Midge...are you alright?" Emma asked. "Do you need the flag...?"

"I'm fi-fine." Midge grunted. "The kids need it most."

"You're not fine." Violet frowned. "You're more blue than the rest of us..."

"Admittedly, I'm not sure how much longer I can take this..."

The group was halfway through. It was unclear how they'd fare the rest of the time, but it didn't seem Midge or Ghost would make it at this pace.

Bradley screamed and pushed the limp body of Albert they'd been huddling beside to the side letting him tumble to the ground before tucking in tighter with the others "M-M-M-Mr Helios...I don't care what you do with the vaccines j-j-just choose already so we can get out of here."

This far in, the cold seemed to have numbed Ghost so much that they could barely respond to Albert's death, or Bradley's reaction to it. "Y-yeah, I think... I think, yeah, I think we need to get out of here," they commented, unable to string together anything more intelligent than that. "For the... for the best. Yeah."

“Special announcement.” Null interjected. It could’ve been the freezer, but her voice sounded less cold than usual.

“To facilitate a better decision-making process, I will lock all other trials for the duration of this game. In other words, you may all consider this the final trial, with your lives in Helios’ hands. Thank you for your patience and ongoing support of the Nullification Game.”

“C-Cut the crap!” Teddy snapped at the others. “We n-need the info on the vaccines. Helios! Unless you plan on g-giving Adriana or Emma a vaccine, we’re better off s-sending them to the back! Honestly, I’d rather g-get it over quickly like that than go through the Blight.”

As Teddy says this, he temporarily breaks away from the group to try to peel Albert’s lab coat off his corpse (as best as he can manage with frozen fingers), then sticks it out to Midge.
