"Let's just check out the computer," Teddy grumbled. "That isn't going to kill us. ...Probably. Plus if we leave the USB stick in Helios's hands for too long, I'm sure something is gonna happen to it."

After a brief detour where everybody had gone off their own way, Teddy and Emma found each other.

“What are you doing over here?” Emma asked.

“Well, this was the plan, wasn't it? I wanted to make sure I got here before Helios did. Why are you here?”

“Oh, no reason. Just felt like coming over, I guess.”

Teddy opened the door.

Spoiler:
The first thing they noticed was the blood. Despite there being a large pool of it, the smell was the most noticeable part. Sharp and metallic.

Helios laid under the counter with the computers. Various supplies were scattered about as if there were a fight, and he had a far away look in his open eyes. There was a large slit on his throat, with a bloody pair of scissors nearby.

Teddy sighed.

"I hate being right."

"Right about what Mr Teddy?" Bradley asks as he approaches the scene before emitting a small gasp and a shriek seeing the body.

"M-Mr Helios...is he...d-dead?" he choked out the last word as he took in the gruesome scene in front of him.

"Oh... oh god..." Ghost recoiled at the sight, before moving in front of Bradley to try and block it from his view. "He's... yes, he's gone. Someone... someone must have killed him." Even now, whatever they felt about the matter was heavily muted by the hazmat suit.

“W-what the hell is this?!”, Albert shouts, coming right after the others had, staring in horror at the gruesome sight in front of him. “D-did someone kill him?! B-but then…who…why? Is there a murderer among us?” He eyes the others nervously. “N-no…it can’t be… What the fuck?! Was the killer…trying to eliminate someone else so we’d have one less person to worry about giving vaccines to? Shit, man…”

"HELIOS!" Adriana cried as she ran towards his prone form, slipping on some of the flotsam strewn about the room in her haste. She checked his pulse and immediately went about desperately trying to revive him.

"Come on-- wake up, Helios!" she cried, tearing up. "Just open your eyes-- you don't have to speak!"

A cursory investigation of the room doesn't reveal much. There's a lot of blood by the PC, but there's a small rectangular slit where there's none. That's about the only thing that seems unusual, or possibly useful.

"...What could've fit in that slit? That USB stick Tesla had with him?", Albert questions. "So...if it isn't here, does that mean the killer has it with them? Alright, then a cursory search should reveal who did it, r-right?"

"W-well, at the very least, I think that makes it clear what the killer's objective was," Ghost said uncomfortably. "I think that means we're safe for now... not that I like the idea of letting a murderer walk free."

“I doubt they’d be stupid enough to keep the stick on them, but I guess you never know. We could also see if anybody has an extra vote...”

Teddy peered down at stared at the slit. “It looks like the stick was in the computer when Helios was killed. So, for what it’s worth, the killer should actually know what was on it.”

"...Maybe the stick's contents were the reason why they killed him?", Albert suggests. "Still, we all should at least give in to a cursory search for now, just in case."

His eyes suddenly light up, realising something. "...Say, Midge did die from that platform, right? Did anyone actually see her corpse?"

Bradley swivelled on Albert "Miss Midge is a nice lady! She wouldn't go around killing anyone like that!" he said pouting trying his best to be angry but at this point his sickness had him too tired to raise his voice much. "I-I'm fine with a search though, maybe we should all go to the front door so we can be sure we're all together and safe first though."

After returning to the foyer, everybody was searched but the USB drive wasn't found. Adriana and Teddy elected to check out Midge's body, and found that if she did somehow fake her death, she definitely needed a second body to replace her...

“Ghost, you alright buddy?” Albert asked.

Ghost was staring around the foyer area. He seemed lost in thought, and a bit more nervous ever since they had waited for Teddy and Adriana.

“I remembered something.” He said it in a strange way. Like he wasn’t happy to have remembered it.

“What did you remember?”

“...a terrible thing I did.”

Spoiler:
I used to be a doctor. I can’t quite remember more specific details than that, but I was some sort of specialist.

One day, I was assigned to a patient. It was an unusual situation, as my patient was very sick. The only job I was given was “Keep them alive.”

Did you know there’s an intrinsic link between mood and health? Belief in recovery often aids recovery. It’s even said that physical injuries on those with healthy minds have been known to heal faster than those of depressed minds.

I'd never met them before but it was easy to keep the patient happy. It was easy to continue the rest of the treatment. I was good at it, better than the others I worked with. I got along with my patient. We got to know each other very well. And despite my position, I even began to feel like I loved them, in a way that I hadn’t ever felt.

More time passed. I was able to keep my employers satisfied enough with the results. It was very expensive to keep them alive, but I made sure it could be done as long as I could try and help them.

However, being sick so long is bad for mental health. And because of that their physical health began to decline quickly too.

I was no longer getting any results. It was blatant stagnation, and my employers were tired of it. I tried one last time.

It didn’t work. In fact, instead of cheering them up, we got in a fight. They said they never wanted to see me again, and for my employers that was enough to reassign me.

After some time, it was clear nobody else could make meaningful progress on them. The employers were no longer feeling it was worth it to prolong this any more.

I tried to help the patient last time...get them to reconsider. But they refused. It seemed like they had already resigned themselves to never getting better. To dying. But it was worse than I thought.

Afterwards, my employers decided that I had failed. I was fired, and they terminated my patient. They argued a lethal injection was far more humane than keeping them alive any longer...

It was a difficult feeling. I hadn't ever failed a patient before, and this was my fault. I couldn't help but feel that things could've been different had I just been more honest...

Ghost shook their head. "Nothing of the sort, sadly. Those events, they made a strong impact on me. I still don't remember anything else about myself, or my life, but I remember that well."

Albert stares simply before speaking up. He seemed surprisingly sympathetic, patting Ghost on the back. "That's...pretty sad, yeah. I'm sorry it had to happen to you, Ghost... You seem like a pretty good person." He looks down sadly. "I know how it feels, man. Losing someone to care for is shit. Especially when...nobody fucking cares. The entire world is against you...nothing can be done. It's twisted, yet you're expected to forget about it, move along. W-where the hell is the humanity in that?!", he suddenly shouts, voice cracking slightly. "I-in a way, it feels like the world is laughing at you...like you're a pathetically bad joke. Like you're nothing but a goddamn pink ping pong ball."He looks up. "And now your suit is ripped and you're just as liable to die as the rest of us. It's like the equivalent of getting your pants pulled down, except your life depends on it." He sighs, trying to compose himself again.

"Life is unfair, man. That's all I've learned these past few months."

Bradley frowned trying to understand "How would it have been better if you were more honest? From what it sounds like, it was the patient's health that affected their wellbeing rather than your treatment. Isn't that what you said?"

"I... couldn't be honest with them about everything. If I had been, maybe they would have accepted the situation more, and then... maybe things wouldn't have gone the way they did," Ghost explained sadly.

Ghost shook their head again. "Only those memories, and... one or two other small things. Actually, I... the trial, my trial, hearing it made me remember something else, too. I remembered some small memory about the patient, one of my attempts to cheer them up, though at the time I didn't know that's what the memory was about. I don't recall anything else, though, still nothing about who I am or the life I lived outside of being that patient's doctor."

Attention. Bradley has chosen an opponent. His opponent is. Ghost.

Everybody turned towards each other briefly before running to the gym.

Bradley and Ghost were setting up the pieces on the board already. Presumably starting their first practice game.

“You started the trial, then?” Emma shook, then looked at her watch. Eighty minutes left. “Well, can’t say I blame you.”

Bradley moved first and then Ghost followed. Their first moves were lightning fast, and only slowed down briefly as the game moved on. By the end of it…

Bradley was the winner.

“Game 2.” Ghost nodded, and began setting up the pieces again.

“Wait.” Teddy grabbed Ghost’s shoulder. “Ghost, this isn’t the time to be fucking around. You could die here. Tell us what your trial is.”

Ghost just kept setting up the pieces, not listening.

Teddy pulled out a gun and stuck it against Ghost’s visor. “I’m not fucking around Ghost.”

“I’m not….screwing around either.” Ghost turned back to the game. “Bradley chose his opponent. If you kill me, then that’s guaranteed one less vaccine in the mix. I made my decision.” Ghost turned his face to Teddy’s. “I’m not doing it. Nobody is doing it.”

Teddy clicked his tongue and angrily put the gun back by his side. It was clear the issue wasn’t dropped however, just prolonged.

The other eight games went by quickly. Soon, there was 45 minutes left.

The final game. They had more time per turn.

“6-3. Ghost’s favor.” Albert bit his lip. “Not pretty.”

“That doesn’t tell the whole story.” Adriana’s eyes barely flitted up in her still ongoing grief. “Bradley won games 8 and 9.”

“None of that matters.” Teddy growled. “This last game...is the only one that counts.”

“Ghost.” Null spoke up. “You are the one who was challenged. Pick which color you’d like to play.”

“What’s the difference?” Violet asked, confused at the rules.

“White goes first.” Albert bluntly elucidated. “That’s it.”

“So...it’s better?”

“Well, it’s referred to as first-move advantage.” Emma said, twiddling her still unused vaccine between her fingers.

“Advantage…?” Albert blinked. “I’ve never heard of it being better to go first.”

“Some say it is. Some say the game’s pace is automatically dictated by the first move.” She continued. “Some prefer to be black because they prefer to counter every move, rather than constantly go on the attack.”

“That’s stupid.” Teddy grumbled. “There are so many moves. There’s no way who goes first mattrs.”

“Among experts, not really.” Emma admitted. “But among novices...it’s been found to make a difference?”

“We’re running out of time.” Bradley coughed up some blood. “Ghost, just pick.”

"I'll... pick white," Ghost decided. "I'll play first, I'll go on the attack. Bradley... you'll need to do everything you can to stop me here," they declared steadfastly, before making their first move.

Bradley frowned looking at the others "I wish you all didn't have to see this." He shook his head disapprovingly at Ghosts choice "I just want to get out. I've had enough of this..." He gave Ghost a serious look as he made his move.

"I... admit I'd have rather this was private, too," Ghost said, not looking away from the board. "After all that's happened here, we don't need even more misfortune... but still, don't hold back. Don't give up, don't look away from the challenges right in front of you." They punctuated the last word with a clack as they put their next piece down, making a surprisingly aggressive move.

Bradley gripped his next pawn with intensity his hand shaking with barely contained anger. Taking a deep breath Bradley's hand stilled allowing him to calmly plan his next move "I've never done that." He replied to Ghost as he countered Ghosts aggression with some of his own. "I'm well accustomed to challenges, it's because I want more that I must beat you."

"Good! Good..." Ghost replied, mulling their next move over. "Be strong, face your challenges, but don't let your anger get in the way. You know what you're doing, I'm glad," they said, almost gently, before firmly clacking another piece down.

The game continued. It was much slower than the others. The pace was meticulous, but no turn was over the thirty seconds on the clock.

“Wait a second…” Emma observed the board. “Ghost just got trapped.

“He has to sacrifice a pawn or knight…and he just lost another piece two turns ago!” Albert was biting his nails.

Ghost…moved his knight in position. Bradley took it with a bishop.

“At this rate, Bradley’s gonna win.” Violet observed.

“No…” Adriana shook her head. “Ghost has been attacking while Bradley’s been countering but…the tides haven’t turned. Bradley’s style is aggressive, and Ghost is laying out a longer game.”

“A longer game…?”

Emma nodded. “The key to chess, is staying more moves ahead than your opponent. Predicting more outcomes than they can. That’s all it is. By sacrificing his knight, Ghost prevented Bradley's pawn from getting further penetration in the board. That's a side that would've been troublesome to deal with.”

Bradley frowned as he brought his rooks into the game in force. "I used to love playing chess with my Dad. He was always so clever about it. Taught me what all the pieces did, all the special moves. He was kind of a champion at it really." He finished placing his piece and tapped the clock "I owe him for the skills I have today. Its why I'd be doing him a disservice if I didn't make it out of here." He muttered to Ghost.

Aware of the others in the room Bradley said "If you are bored you don't need to stay...chess isn't always the most exciting spectator sport."

Bradley smiles slightly at the thought "Whatever I want to." He answers simply closing his eyes and visualising it "Everything? I've got my whole life ahead of me once I win here." He tapped his piece to his chin in thought.

“Not a bad choice, Brad”, Albert softly commented, nodding his head thoughtfully. “You’d be surrounded by books all day, in absolute silence. Tranquility is something we all desire, you know? Libraries offer that quiet moment we all need. It’s essential when you’re studying to, no distractions there… Other than that one time I caught a couple making out next to me. Seriously, there’s a time and place for that shit. They were smooching so fucking loud that the entire library heard ‘em. To this day I still don’t know what the fuck that was all about.”

“…What were we talking about again?”, Albert asks.

Bradley shot Albert a look, clearly his goofiness wasn't appreciated "Or maybe I'll be an adventurer, from one of my stories. See the world, understand it firsthand...rather than from books. The world has so much to offer and see. Yeah I think I'll do that first." He nodded satisfied with his decision.
