"That's a pretty good theory," Erik conceded, scratching behind his head. "Though couldn't the thief have screwed Raphael over if they found the ring? Since Gideon said in his will that anyone who found the ring would be considered the next head of the family, blood-related or not? ... Then again, Raphael could've easily left that part out and just said that he needed the ring."

"Lemme take the air out of this twist before anybody gets too excited. Are you guys fine with me calling him 'The Imposter' in red? I'm not quite sure of his name--The Imposter was on Geistfabel for a completely benign reason. I think Raphael just doesn't like you guys. Reunions probably got a lot more boring without me there." It seemed very silly and mundane, but there was no reason to question it if it was said in red. "And so nobody gets any crazy ideas, the imposter certainly doesn't share a name with any other character."

"... Before I start, I need to confirm something." Ingrid, who had been busy reading one of the many Ghost Fables books available. "You told me that if the tape was unbroken in an entryway, it hadn't opened since it was set. That's not enough. Say it in red: No piece of tape was replaced by another after being broken."

Gideon stared blankly at his sister until his grin slowly widened ear to ear. “Given the unique design of the tape, Ingrid is the only one who could replace a broken piece of tape. She wood of course recognize if a piece had been replaced.

“This is the best I could do. After all, you replaced the broken piece on the tomb, did you not?”

Lynde stroked his chin nodding to himself.

"Could I get red words that there was never a key made out of ice? It seems to me that it is already at the edge of probability based off several of the Red Truths, but for my peace of mind." He paused for a moment, then nodded as if that was it.

"So... I know people already knows this, but... the dining room door. We established that a master key was used to open the door, as Gideon said that the dining room key was in the servants' room... Of the suspects, we can eliminates those who were in the dining room at the time that the door was opened, therefore the only suspect list remains that of:

Suspect List
  • Edna
  • Lynde
  • Erik
  • Juna
  • The Imposter (Pretending to be Raphael)
  • Jolina

Now, as per one of Knox's Commandments, the detective cannot be involved, so he's in the clear. Still... Any of these people could have opened the dining room door with the master key... Except, we don't know if the master key was stolen prior to the incident. If it wasn't stolen, then it'd be either Juna or Jolina... Or if the key was stolen, then whoever got their master key stolen should be in the clear. And maybe whoever still have their master key should be in the clear, as why would you open the door with the stolen master key if you have your own?" Harley said, still puzzling over the matters at hand.

"Why can't the dining room key have been used?" Verrier asked Harley. "I also don't believe Knox's commandment applies here, as Christof isn't the 'detective' for solving these crimes, he was merely here to investigate the hit-and-run case. None of us are the 'detective' for the events on the island, or equivalently, we're all the 'detectives'."

Harley stares at the doctor with a look of incredulity, like he just heard something really stupid.

"Are you serious? You saying that the detective isn't the 'detective' of the murders that happened on Geistfabel? So, basically, you're saying that he could have killed someone? That's a bunch of bullshit! That goes completely against Knox's Commandments!" The mechanic shouted back. "He only got caught up in this mess because his boat blew up the dock, which was caused by a faulty engine! Not to mention that we have to wait out the snowstorm before help can come..."

He looks toward Gideon. "Hey, Gideon? It seems like the doctor and I are in a bit of a disagreement about the detective here, so we'd like to hear what you have to say about this matter."

"If you really felt that way, Erik, you should have told us," Fritz said solemnly, still lost on what was happening. "Nothing is worth you feeling like that was the only solution. I didn't want to push you too hard. I just wanted you to live a life you could be satisfied with..."

Fritz trails off and refocuses his attention on the group.

"Let's just get this over with," Fritz said, pushing his sunglasses up his nose. "Allow me to provide the solution to all of Gideon's riddles."

"First of all, Albrecht's murder. All the stairs in the mansion are secretly escalators. The old man used these to enter the study and locked the door. The killer had previously swapped Albrecht's medicine for identical tablets made of metal, and they used a magnet to take them from outside. Then they blew the dropped pill across the floor with an electric fan or something.

"Next is Julia's murder. We know no one was hiding in the wine cellar, but that doesn't mean there was no one there. When we found Julia's body, her killer's corpse was hidden in the room. I don't really understand this one either, but it's the only explanation I can think of."

"Harley was murdered before the car drove away from the house. The circular rotation of the tires was used to roll up the windows after the killer threw the key inside.

"Mia's death is probably the easiest one to explain. Over the phone, Gideon threatened to kill Ingrid unless Mia ate all the pieces of her gun. She died of indigestion and hit her head on the bed when she fell.

"As for Gideon's tomb, this was quite the trick. Let's start here. The body we found in the tomb entered Gideon's coffin before the tomb was sealed two years ago. The coffin might contained two bodies, with a mechanism that can rotate them around. I don't think we looked into it that closely.

"In that case, what happened to the imposter? They were burned in the incinerator.

"Finally, Gideon's death two years ago. The answer here is simple: Nobody cares about what really happened to Gideon."

Fritz struck a cool pose, having successfully solved every murder and ended Gideon's reign of terror single-handedly.

"Honestly though, I'm embarrassed for you, Gideon. None of these answers come close to being as good as my latest season finale."

"Now Fritz--I hope you can still stand after this onslaught."

Gideon took a red pen out, getting ready to correct Fritz's terrible homework. For the first time in a long time, Gideon felt something. The joy of being a child again.

"Hmph."

The sound of the tome of Ghost Fables snapping shut echoed throughout the courtroom. A figure in a familiar cloak and mask was holding it disdainfully.

"I always thought your mysteries focused too much on the mechanical tricks, without enough consideration for the people that dwelled within your story." He was staring at the book, but it was clear who his words were directed towards.

He lowered the book, and his mask scanned around the room. "One of you killed my friend, and I am very keen to find out which of you it was." The mask turned towards Gideon. "Unfortunately, you seemed to have neglected to give us much detail on his death compared to the others, and, knowing how you love to toy with people, I assume you are going to force us--or at least me--to solve the other deaths before you allow me to challenge what was supposed to be my own. Very well. Let us start at the beginning.

"Albrecht locked the study door after the culprit had left, before succumbing to his heart attack!" Raphael shouted, with more intensity than any present had likely heard from him in a long time, if ever.

Harley nods at Gideon. "Well... If you say so, then it'll be tricky to determine who is the detective of this story..."

"Since Gideon haven't answered my question about the car's trunk, so I'll make him answer my question with this theory... My killer left the locked car via the car's trunk!

And while I'm on the topic of the locked car mystery... The killer cut the brake line with the knife, because if something was pushing down on the brake, it'd prevents them from moving the car; the brake would prevents the wheels from turning."

"I mean, that's all I can think of, given my knowledge of cars and the little details like that..." He added on quietly.

Ah, Raphael. Come to join us? Did you forget to look both ways before crossing the street? I can see you're already intent to get in the swing of things--The culprit left the room AFTER Albrecht succumbed to his heart attack." Gideon hadn't usually participated in these 'battles' with Raphael, and did not know how he would advance further. "Furthermore, the culprit was in the room with Albrecht when they took his medicine AND as he had his heart attack."

"The trunk is no different from the other doors. It was locked when Harley's corpse was discovered. Your second blue is not a complete theory on its own. It doesn't explain how the crime is 'possible'. But yes, cutting the brake line would allow the car to move since cars are defaulted to neutral."

"...I see." With the mask, it was difficult to tell how Raphael felt about his theory being rebuffed so easily. His tone and body language didn't seem fazed, but it was still difficult to know for sure. Raphael crossed one leg over the other and clasped his gloved hands in his lap. "I do feel a bit foolish having to ask this, but I would feel even more foolish if it turned out you were able to lead everyone around by the nose with such a petty trick. Please confirm: At no point during the events in question was there a person on Geistfabel with the name 'Nobody'."

"You pussy!" Edelfäule makes a disgusting throttling noise as she expels the rot from her lungs in a heap in front of her. "So the murder method wasn't used in your trick, huh? I bet no part of the killer's identity played a part in locking the room. Fine then, amateur!"

"I could create this closed room without any special special dogshit. After the killer killed Albert, they used a long rope in a loop around the window lock. The door was chained shut, but the killer left both ends of the rope in the crack allowed by the chain lock. The killer then left through the window outside. The killer then returned to the other side of the door to lock the window with the rope. Then, the killer could pull one or the other end of the rope to free it." The demon squeezes a can of Red Bull violently and sprays it in her face, ready to kick some butt.

Edna didn't seem to offer any blue truths of her own, for whatever reason. Perhaps she was trying to come up with a plausible solution for any of the locked room mysteries herself. Seeing Fritz's theories did at least make her feel a bit better about herself, though.

Quote:
"Honestly though, I'm embarrassed for you, Gideon. None of these answers come close to being as good as my latest season finale."

"If this is what your mind came up with, then I'm terrified to ask what your latest finale was like", she spoke in an uncharacteristically blunt manner.

"It's as I said, Harley. Christof's profession is 'detective', but his role in the 'story' is not 'the detective'. They are different concepts. We need to work together to solve these crimes, so we shouldn't lash out at each other. We need to have open discussions so that we can reach conclusions together. On that note, you've yet to respond to me about the dining room key. Gideon said that the dining room key could, in fact, have been used to open the dining room back then, so why are you saying it couldn't?"

Verrier looked around at the others. "We're starting in full now, then? I've been thinking about the tomb, perhaps I'll start there. The builders snuck something in just before they added the remaining wall. And another thing, there was some kind of cavity below the coffin in the tomb. Something else I considered is that leaning the painting against the coffin created a spot someone or something could hide in. I'd also like to rule these out: there was another entrance into the tomb, and the tomb roof, which we never checked, could be removed."

"...Teamwork is an overrated commodity," Angelo sighed. "Whilst people are focusing on other murders, such as Albrecht or Harley, here you are suggesting a new topic completely. The madness!"

This was perhaps a bit of a self-insert of someone who was confused as to what to focus on at the current moment.

"I have no thoughts about the tomb, currently. But as we were on the topic of Albrecht's death a bit earlier, are we sure there were no other means of exit aside from the window and door? Wasn't there a bathroom separate from the study that you could access from the study?"

"I'm not sure I'm in a good position to think about Albrecht's murder," Verrier responded, looking ever-so-slightly sheepish. "If we all want to focus on one crime at a time though, I can go along with that. I just wanted to get those things about the tomb off my chest first."

"Wow, you guys have a lot to ask. Maybe it would be good to focus this a bit? First things first, let me tell you all about cyan truths. It's exactly the same as a blue truth but it's easier on the eyes." Gideon felt this would be ignored and his torture would continue, but he'd be remiss if he didn't mention it.

"The builders did not do anything to the tomb the family was unaware of. Regarding this 'cavity', there's no secret hiding place constructed in the tomb. I feel bad about the painting, an author shouldn't write in an irrelevant detail like that. I thought it'd make for a good sentimental moment, y'know? The painting is irrelevant, but it was in the tomb as expected at the end of the story."

Gideon was getting winded, perhaps 'red' had more of an effect on the user than it appeared. "I already said there's no secret passage besides the one in the guest room, but this applies to the tomb as well. The only exit is the door. If the crossbar is in place, it's a perfect closed room."

"I like you're thinking, Angelo. Let's focus this down a little. And to answer your question, the study had a bathroom but it was not an exit. And of course when I said nobody was hiding in the study that included the bathroom."

Gideon could relax a little now that he was done with red for now. "Let me give a few 'topics' to consider. Gideon's death should be dealt with at the end, if at all. The tomb should also be dealt with separately--the headship is one the line there, so I'd rather do that mono y mono. So for now, I won't answer any more red regarding the tomb. You could still get to the answer without red though. So if any eager character wants to solve it, go ahead! But there's a price if you get it wrong." He added with a chill.

"Otherwise, you're free to pick and choose which topics you wish. I suggest starting with Albrecht's study, like Angelo mentioned. And so people don't get distracted by the dining room door, there's nothing to suggest that that's an impossible crime... yet. So don't waste the brainpower, okay?"

And finally he turned to Ingrid, "For the court record and everybody's sanity, could you go over when and what you taped?"

And finally he turned to Ingrid, "For the court record and everybody's sanity, could you go over when and what you taped?"

"That's enough. All I needed was confirmation no one except me could do it." Ingrid answered. "... This really is a game for you, isn't it? I have to admit, I really missed talking to you about your mysteries like this..."

"This is all the tape I've used since the day you 'died':"

Spoiler:
Gideon's death: Taped Gideon and Edna's bedroom, as well as everyone who was present that day plus the empty guest room Gideon was found in. By morning, only the tape on Fritz and Heinrich's room was broken.
Gideon's funeral: Taped the tomb after it was closed for the first time. Jolina had cleaned the tomb and removed the tape by morning.
The bulk of the mystery: Taped the tomb again during the house tour. Was unbroken after dinner, but broken after discovery of Albrecht's corpse.
Taped the door to the study after everyone left following discovery of Albrecht's corpse. Tape was unbroken when the study was opened again to find the body missing.
Taped the doors to the rooms Mia and Erik were staying in. Tape was unbroken in both when everyone discovered Mia dead and Erik missing.

"... So with that out of the way, let's begin. First: Albrecht wasn't dead when we found him in the study. Verrier gave us a false diagnosis. His heart attack happened later, after the bottle of medicine was taken out of the room and 'pried from his hands', in a way. I want confirmation father was dead before we opened that door."

"And the red you've given for the pill bottle isn't comprehensive enough. The killer could've pried the bottle from his hands through the opening in the door the chain left, and then thrown the bottle in after he died. The bottle wouldn't have to travel through the door, but the killer would still be outside."

"And while we're at this, let's confirm another thing. Say it in red: It's impossible to lock a window from outside the room."

Gideon was getting excited too. The atmosphere, the tension, the music. It was a beautiful combination of wanting his mysteries to be solved, and wanting it all to last so much longer.

"Interesting! Albrecht wasn't dead? I'd like to wait before smashing that with red--tell me if you can, how did Albrecht get upstairs? But yes, regarding the windows it's impossible to lock the window from the other side--that's the 'outside'."

"If the theory tracks, then Verrier could have helped him up. I can't say I know why they would set this up, but so long as it's possible, I'm sure I can come up with a motive." Ingrid answered, cracking a smile. "Do you want me to say it in blue? Another person helped father up the stairs and into the study."

Fritz was blown into the air by the force of Gideon's red truths. He did multiple mid-air somersaults before landing on his feet once again, unfazed.

"Knox's 4th. For the escalator and the magnet. Goes without saying, but there's no complicated appliance or device used here.

"You think a magnet is a complicated device?" Fritz asked, "Are you kidding me? You point it at something metal, and it picks it up. It's not that difficult to understand. Maybe you should have paid more attention in class instead of plotting murders."

"I'm glad we're all in agreement about my last blue truth, at least."

Southern Corn wrote:
"If this is what your mind came up with, then I'm terrified to ask what your latest finale was like", she spoke in an uncharacteristically blunt manner.

"I'm not sure what that tone is for," Fritz replied, "That was actually on of my finer works. The premise was that Gustav Grimsley's wife is stabbed in the throat after giving bird to their newborn son. It was a really heart-wrenching moment. The editor could barely see the footage he was putting together through his tears. But the mystery comes in because Gustav was right in front of the door to the ward and didn't see anyone approach the door. Obviously the doctor delivering the baby is the prime suspect, but Gustav doesn't think he's guilty because the wound was too amateurish to be dealt by someone with medical knowledge. So how did she die?"

Fritz paused for dramatic effect.

"The solution is that Gustav's son stabbed her after being born because he's actually a demon baby! So he'll be a major antagonist going forward. Should be able to give Cici's character more screen time now that Gustav's single again too. I'm sure the next season will be unforgettable!"

"... You know Friedrich, that's really impressive. It's like every word that came out of your mouth just now was handcrafted specifically to anger me." Ingrid elucidated with a smile. "It's incredible! I don't think even the two years I've spent thinking you killed my brother can compare to the genuine rage I'm feeling towards you right now! I kinda want to kill you now."

Edna looked away from her siblings in law, quickly developing a terrible case of second hand embarrassment from what had just been uttered.

"Nobo-" Then Gideon stopped. It seemed he was considering something, and then slowly he spoke again. "Yes, that's enough. Everyone, please flip to the next page of Ghost Fables."

Spoiler: February 28th, ??? PM
Albrecht laid on the floor, wheezing ever so slightly. His ‘killer’ had already left the room, satisfied that he had died. His medication was just out of reach, though he doubted it would do any good now.

He needed help. He needed Verrier. He would die otherwise, so he had to-

No… this would be enough. As long as everyone thought he was dead, he would be able to go after that person. And then the headship would be his, and all would be right in the family again.

For now he would just lay here until he was discovered. Quietly he listened to the snowfall, and the slow tick of a clock in the room. His lazy gaze settled on the door to the room, the chain lock dangling uselessly to the side.

No. Absolutely not.

It was too dangerous to move anyway. There’s no way he could exert that effort without risking another heart attack. His plan was risky enough as is, and there was no reason to complicate it further.

But isn’t it much more fun this way?

Albrecht’s eyes widened. Were those his own thoughts? Or was someone intruding on them?

Stubbornly, he remained on the floor. But only for a few more seconds. And then reluctantly and cantankerously, he dragged himself to the door on his elbows.

[Scene Music]

“Bah… is this what you want, Gideon?”

And then he simply slid the chain lock into place. A massive risk, and one that could expose his entire plan. But it was one he would have to take.

He dragged himself back to the middle of the room, collapsing completely to the floor. He almost thought he gave himself another heart attack with the effort, and then involuntarily he smiled.

“There are rules to this… right, Gideon? I can’t expect to be head without following the rules.”

And that was why, however illogical, Albrecht left this single, simple clue to the others of his true plan. And for the first time in his life, he understood Gideon’s madness as well as his own.

"Frankly, I don't see what the problem is," Fritz replied, scowling. "That episode didn't even break any of Knox's Commandments. If you're biased toward Gideon's writing, you could at least be honest about it."

Then Gideon revealed the truth about Albrecht's death, distracting Fritz from the discussion. As he read over the next page of the story, his brow knit further in consternation.

"Wait, what plan was Albrecht attempting to accomplish by dying?" Fritz asked, "Is anyone else more confused than when we started? And who helped him up the stairs anyway?"

"Of course you won't get all the answers immediately." Gideon huffed. "Patience, pacing, dropping things one revelation at a time. You could learn a thing or two, Fritzy."

He then addressed everyone else. "Albrecht did have his medication taken from him. The culprit believed he died, but he only suffered a heart attack. Albrecht faked his death because he believed it would lead him to the headship--why? We do not yet know. All I can say for now is that Albrecht was certainly alive when everyone entered the study for the first time!"

The red swept across the room like a wave of energy. Whether or not anyone liked the answer or could accept it, it was the truth. "Furthermore, I don't want you guys to let my favorite doctor off the hook! Albrecht did not take any 'fake death' drug. Verrier would never mistake his life or death status."

"D-did he really die at all?" Edna questioned. "Somehow... I can see him deciding to fake his death to look for the headship ring... It would also be a suitable explanation for how his body disappeared. He got up and left... though, wouldn't the tape have stopped him then? How would he have gotten out, especially in his state?"

Gideon's red truth caught her off-guard. So she was correct... more importantly though, Verrier. "D-Doctor... you knew he was alive the whole time, didn't you? You lied to us so that he could get away with his "death"... Were you complicit in his disappearance as well, then?"

Verrier smiled, as usual.

"I did say I wouldn't be able to help with the mysteries surrounding Albrecht. Even if I wanted to, it would ruin the mystery, and dear old Gideon wouldn't be best pleased about that. My apologies."

“I will add that dear old father did not know he hadn’t died when he arrived ‘here’.” Gideon waved his hand around the room vaguely. “He was rather confused about the whole thing. Perhaps the reason he isn’t here now is he found out the truth and thinks he can return to the realm of the living.”

Edna nodded in realisation, looking a bit unhappy to Verrier. "I-I see... Then two questions remain- who is the "killer", and how Albrecht managed to get upstairs... We may not be able to find out the former for now, though perhaps we will through solving the other deaths- the latter is probably explained by them carrying him and the wheelchair up themselves. Individually, most likely", she added. "So if we go with the explanation that Albrecht left the room on his own, there mut have been an easy way to do so without breaking the tape."

"...Was Albrecht still in the room when the tape was applied there?" She looked in the direction of Ingrid and Gideon, just to be sure. "You must have checked, yes?"

"I have to admit, you fooled me." Ingrid laughed, without a shred of anger towards Verrier. Making progress on the mystery like this was putting her in a good mood. "I considered everyone in this island could be lying to me to cover up a murder, but never that you would do the opposite. You're certainly good at deceiving people, doctor."

"I taped the door immediately after we all left, yes." Ingrid answered. "Father was inside when I did so."

Jolina groans, rubbing her forehead. "All of this is so confusing... Julia was not dead when the cellar door was opened by Ingrid and company. For reasons I will not go into they all decided to band together to kill her and did. Is that a valid truth or whatever?" Jolina seemingly suggests half-heartedly.

"Already intent to move on, are we?" Gideon jested. "It is valid, but not correct. A single person killed Julia. They were not cooperating with anyone."
