"And I suppose... you can prove that's how Kat feels?"

"We can talk about what-ifs all we want, but simply saying that Kat could possibly, maybe, know about Exie's debt and feels the need to protect her own revenue with murder... Is not enough to indict her." Light lets out a deep breath, mirroring the patriotic woman.

"Exie was found, acting strangely. The victim was found in a room only she could enter, and Exie has an excellent motive to end that man's life. These are the facts of this case. Kat couldn't have possibly entered Exie's dressing room without her key. And even though Endea entered the room, because in truth it wasn't locked at all, Kat would've had no idea it was unlocked, and would have had no reason to try the door in desperation, knowing full well there's only one key."

"I never said she was smart -- besides, a lot of the prosecution's arguments rely on Exie herself not thinking logically. In fact, the crux of your case relies on her being silly enough to leave a body in her own dressing room. Why would anyone do something that incriminating?"

"Well, alright then. There's really not all that much to say, though."
"I don't know what caused the blackout. The building's wiring should be just fine, even if things look a little rough."
"The previous blackout is unrelated to this one."
"Lucy died of natural causes, so her death has no relevance to Don's murder either."
"She had always been somewhat frail. That's probably all there was to it."

"Hey, easy there."
"Let's see..."
"I was reasonably familiar with Lucy, sure. She performed at my venue often, alongside Exie and Endea."
"It wasn't a long blackout. Someone flipped the fusebox switch and everything was back to normal."
"Lucy wasn't... she wasn't on stage when she died. The performance hadn't started yet."
"She was found dead in her dressing room, which is where she'd been when the blackout occurred."
"Just like the current blackout, I don't know the cause. Maybe someone snagged a power line with a fishing pole? We never found the problem."

"So she was found in the same location our vic was found in?" Pat questioned. "Seems more than just a coincidence if y'ask me..."

He didn't seem satisfied though, deciding to press for more. "Where were Exie and Endea when the incident happened? Was Lucy alone in her room? Was it locked? Where were you? An' also, was there anythin' about the buildin' which was different 2 years ago than it is now?"

Kat winced at the second barrage of questions.

Image
"You're going to give me a headache, you old geezer."
"Yes, she was found in the same dressing room as the mobster, alright?"
"But there's nothing unusual about the room itself. It really is just a coincidence."

"The other two were in their own changing rooms, preparing. Exie was in one of the lesser ones at the time."
"Lucy was alone, yeah. Otherwise someone would have called for help. I was the one who found her in there, after it was too late..."
"The door wasn't locked. There were people around at the time, so there was no reason for concern."
"I was working at the computer in my office when it happened."
"Nothing was especially any different then and now."

"Are we done here? This is starting to feel like a waste of my time."

"It really does," Mai agreed. "Again, what would Kat gain by 'saving' her talent from her debt, just to turn around and frame her for murder?

"The evidence still points to Exie. Want to talk about 'coincidences'? How about looking at the girl who removed her mole, making her look exactly like her sister, then inviting that sister to wait for her in the room where the victim just happened to be found? Sounds a lot like a clumsy attempt to frame Endea for her crime to me, or are you going to say all of that was a coincidence, too?"

Pat winced, but decided to focus on what Kat had said over rebutting Mia. "Why was she alone in her room, with her door unlocked no less? If she was preparin' for the show, why leave the door open? Why not have, say, a makeup artist with her?"

"Also, isn't it strange that she died durin' her dressin' room of a heart attack of all things? Durin' a show, I can understand. But she was all alone when it happened. Can that really just be explained by a frail heart? Was there anythin' off in her dressin' room when she was discovered?"

"How many questions do you have in that head of yours?"

Trying to calm herself, Kat lit a cigarette in the land of the dead and took a slow, steady drag.

Image
"Her make-up artist had already left. Lucy was just doing some final checks."
"The door was unlocked because the make-up artist had left through it."
"I suppose Lucy didn't feel the need to lock it after. She was going to head out shortly anyway."
"They're only locked when in use but unoccupied. It's really not an unusual situation in that regard."
"I... can't explain her death any more than you can. Go ask a doctor."

The final question seemed to trip her, slightly.

Image
"N-no, the room was how it always was. I told you before, it's perfectly ordinary."

"Er... That's just how it happened, I suppose."

Kat seemed quite evasive with her answer.

Image
"Maybe that's not the real problem here!"
"This fraudster wants us to believe the room was just 'normal', but nothing about that shoddy building can be called normal!"
"What was it Charlie said? Something about building inspections?"

Image
"He said it was like the venue hadn't had one for a while... whatever that means."

Image
"Know what I think? Kat's hiding something!"
"Something about that room in particular, maybe!"

Image
"Go have a look, knock yourselves out. You won't find anything."

Image
"WHAT EXCELLENT TIMING. SOMETHING SIMILAR IS BEING DISCUSSED IN THE REAL WORLD AT THIS VERY MOMENT."
"...THAT WAS A JOKE. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS TIME HERE."

Image
"hahaha! very funny sir!"

Death gestured at the hourglass. Over in the real world, the judge Noxx was ordering the bailiff to have the room inspected once more, this time with the building's poor condition taken into account. Death snapped his fingers, and the scene jumped forwards to the results.

Originally the team's investigation hadn't uncovered everything, as the true scene of the crime was determined to be elsewhere. Now that they had a better idea of what to look for however, they had closely examined the walls and flooring of the room. There was a small, loose board near the floor in one of the walls, and when removed they found an exposed cable behind it, that sparked when disturbed by the movement.

Image
"See! Shoddy workmanship. Charlie's not even a real technician and even he felt like things weren't right there."

"FETCH ME A COPY OF LUCY WARNER'S AUTOPSY REPORT."

Image
"er, yes sir, on it sir!"

The small ghost flew off somewhere, and returned with the requested document. Copies were distributed to both sides.

'The victim is Lucy Warner, a teenage female. Her body was found in the main dressing room of the Venus House of Arts. She died of a heart attack. She had a recent burn on her ankle, covered by an adhesive bandage, but no other injuries. The conclusion is that she died of natural causes. Estimated time of death is between 18:50 and 19:10.'

"Surely it ain't hard to see how this is similar to how our vic's autopsy report turned out! Y'think it was possible she got electrocuted and that was what led to her havin' a heart attack? Or wait, maybe somebody tried t'revive 'em usin' the wire..? Nah, wait, that doesn't fully add up... Why the ankle specifically? If we assume it was because of that wire, then... what does that mean?"

"So what if it did?!" Mai snapped. She slammed her hand on the desk in front of her (and if there wasn't one there before well guess what there is now), the force of doing so causing her sunglasses to slide off her forehead and down over her eyes. "So now you're suggesting the victim was electrocuted? Then explain the water in his lungs! Last I checked, faulty wiring doesn't cause that!"

"You're right. Lucy was electrocuted."

"I only wanted to save on expenses. The upkeep costs for this building... sometimes it's hard to even stay afloat."
"I skipped out on building inspections, and tried to cut corners on maintenance."
"Sure the fixtures might start to look ragged, but so long as it all holds together..."
"...Unfortunately, that meant no-one found the loose cable until it was too late."

"I quickly realised my mistake when I walked into that room and found her dead."
"Blame would fall on me, and quite rightly too, so I... I couldn't go to jail, my family were counting on me."
"I covered the burn with a bandage, hid the wire behind a board in the wall and then called an ambulance."
"They said it was 'natural causes'. I'd... gotten away with it."

"From then on though, well, I couldn't have any proper maintenance done."
"If anyone found the loose cable, the truth would come out."
"I could do nothing but dig myself deeper into my hole, hoping it would just... work out, somehow."

"When the second blackout happened, I was terrified by what it meant."
"That's why I rushed to the dressing room."
"Sure enough, there was a dead man inside... Later though, I heard that he'd drowned. Maybe I was safe?"
"Now, though, I don't know anymore. All I can say is, I didn't kill Don. I wouldn't make the same mistake twice in a row."

Death gestured once more to the real world projection. There, the dead could see that the investigation team had done a thorough examination of the whole building. There were no water leaks, or any other pertinent building flaws.

“And that brings us back to square one.” Light sighed. “What has all of this changed, exactly? The bandage on his leg is a coincidence. Nothing more. I see little to suggest that he was murdered in that way.”

“Coincidences mean little. Kat has assured us that nobody would’ve known about the truth of that first, irrelevant death. How would someone have found the truth, to murder a man in a room he shouldn’t have been in? Nobody but Carcharo and Charlie would’ve even known about the meeting in that dress room in the first place.”
