"Benjamin went into the torture chamber, sat down at the chair and hacked his own leg off, thus freeing him from his shackles. He cauterised the wound, and kept some blood to make a clone with.
"Returning to the elevator, he placed the now-free brace into the slot on the floor, holding it in place. He drew an outline of himself on the floor, making sure the clone's leg would appear right where the brace was, then used the saved blood to summon a clone of himself.
"He then brought the clone back to chair in the room and 'tortured it' to create the illusion that he himself had been tortured, though he probably couldn't complete the challenge this way. Then he left the clone leaning against the furnace and went elsewhere, doing... something or other. How did the Benjamin we saw die? He didn't. He was never alive in the first place, just a clone."

The alcohol tank is about one third empty and lying next to it is a rectangular mirror, about as wide as the alcohol box and a lot taller than it.
Alcohol seems to be all around it.
The lid is open.

"I think Benjamin... or possibly Matt or even Klifford somehow... was hiding in the liquor tank. They'd be protected from the lethal gas in there, and by angling the mirror so it reflected the floor or ceiling they'd be invisible to anyone looking into the tank. After killing everyone else they hid in there and waited for the timer to run out. Then they simply waited some more as we investigated, popping their head up to breath every so often perhaps. Once we all came here for the tribunal they finally left, leaving the scene in the state I found it. This is also why they needed to take the mirror, the removal of which didn't otherwise help their plan altogether that much at all. I suppose it's also why no-one completed the alcohol challenge. That way the deadly gas releases for sure, and that way the tank is still mostly full."
